Both legs done, 1 side I wear a compression bandage on it and is looking good but the other side just had 1 spot done and the doctor just wrapped it, this side is noticeably more swollen. When can I begin to expect to see the swelling start to go down? I do levitate that leg but it really doesn’t make much of a difference.
Answer: Sclerotherapy Results for veins--takes a series of treatments I recommend following up with your Doctor about what to expect and their after care recommendation. Keep in mind, it takes 2-3 treatments of sclerotherapy for improvement otherwise you can try lasers for the smaller vessels. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Answer: Sclerotherapy doesn't ususally cause swelling I don't typically see leg swelling after sclerotherapy to treat spider veins. Did you have a Varithena treatment, which is a foam sclerotherapy often used to treat larger veins, such as the greater saphenous vein? I suspect your compression garment may be too tight. I would tell your physician about the swelling.

Answer: Recommendation post treatment See your provider for follow up appointment, this is essential as well as communicating any question or concern. A venous ultrasound can be done for the swollen leg if it does not improve or worsen to make sure there is not a complication from the treatment. Recommend wearing medical compression stockings with a pressure of at least 20-30 mmHg for 1 week during the day after your treatment. Walking is great to stay active and it is encouraged after vein treatment. On the other hand, avoid heavy lifting more than 20 pounds for two weeks. Stay out of direct sunlight for 3 to 4 weeks post treatment. Another option is to wear sun protection or cover the treated area to prevent hyper-pigmentation.

Answer: Post sclerotherapy swelling. The posted pictures show left foot swelling but the ace wrap is from above the ankle up to the thigh. This is not correctly wrapped. The compression needs to be as on the right leg from the base of the toes proximally. By wrapping from above the ankle as on the left, the area below the wrap will swell. I recommend changing the compression to include the left foot and ankle.

Answer: Swelling after sclerotherapy If the sclerotherapy was done for simple spider veins, then you should not have swelling. Even if some of the large veins were treated with sclerotherapy swelling is not normal. You need to discuss it with the physician who did the treatment. You could have deep vein thrombosis. Other possibility is the wraps you are using are too tight. Why aren't you using compression stockings on both legs??
