Answer: Why do some Plastic Surgeons use drains & others don't? I do not use drains, because I have not noticed a reduction in fluid collections with their use. I would search for the board certified plastic surgeon who you feel is most likely to give you the best results and who performs hundreds of these procedures each year. I would look at patient reviews as well as before and after photos on that surgeon's website.Kenneth Hughes, MDLos Angeles, CA

Answer: Use of drains in plastic surgery Drains are only useful for removing serous (thin) body fluid. They are used when large raw surface areas are created (think: tummy tucks) or when lymphatics are deranged (think: mastectomy with lymph node dissection). Drains do not protect against hematomas since the blood will clot in the tubes and prevent further drainage. When we place absorbable mesh (think: hernias and breast reconstruction with implants/tissue expanders) we use drains since many mesh products cause fluid collection while they incorporate.Studies have shown that drains used for breast reduction or face lifts decrease patient satisfaction and do not lower complications rates.Drains can be a source of infection.Hope this helps!
