How Long Will It Take for Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation to Fade Without Treatment?

I have post inflammatory hyperpigmentation following laser treatment for stretch marks. I am very reluctant to use a hydroquinone cream because of the controversy regarding its safety. Other creams seem to be forms of hydroquinone. Using no treatment, will it eventually fade and how long do you think it will take? Are there other creams using a different agent with less or no safety concern? I'm light-skinned; any thoughts on why I got PIH ? Can over-zealous laser treatment cause it?
