Can Invisalign cause locked jaw?

I'm on my second set of retainers and my jaw locked up. It'snot locked open and its not locked closed, I just can't open my mouth all the way. It has been locked for about a week and a half.

Has this happened to anyone during their Invisalign treatment? If so, how did you correct it ?

A: TENS and then decide

Lance Timmerman, DMD

You should seek a dentist that will TENS you to determine what is happening. Invisalign probably revealed your true condition, and is not a cause of your problem. Once the muscles are relaxed, you should be able to determine what the next step should be.

Hi MSB, Do you have any history of TMJ? This reviewer here on RealSelf has had a similar experience to you (click here). I know that's no consolation, but here's hoping you get an answer that helps you both! :-/ Good luck, --Sharon

Hi, I am the person who Sharon referred to above. YES, Invisalign will cause your jaw to lock, only way to unlock is to remove appliance. I currently am wearing just the top and will wear the bottoms afterwards even though I am currently waiting for my new trays which had to be redone after not fiting properly. Don't know about all this, am quite frustrated. Good Luck!

interesting thread. I'm on tray 8 of my treatment and have twice had my jaw lock up. I've noticed it happens at night, and I suspect I'm clenching my teeth in my sleep because of the trays and how different my bite is beginning to feel. So while I don't think Invisalign is the problem--I do believe it's my subconcious reaction to wearing the trays at night. In both instances, my jaw loosened up and snapped back into place within an hour. I've not had a problem like this in the daytime.
