Breast Reconstruction: Q&A

What Happens to Extra Skin After Breast Reconstruction?

I was expanded to 600cc, thinking I would get 550cc implants, but the surgeon only put in 450cc and there is loose skin. Will the shrink (I am 56). I am really not happy with the results.

Extra skin

Without photos it is unclear what extra skin you have. If it remains loose, you may need a revision to tighten it up a bit.

Extra skin after implant reconstruction

i would recommend a discussion with your plastic surgeon in regards to your unhappy results.    The two options are to remove more skin or to upsize your implant to fill the skin envelope.   Breast Reconstruction is a process and revision surgery is occasionally necessary to give the optimal result.   All the best.

Loose Skin or Reconstructed Breast Volume

The real question is what is making you unhappy. If it is the loose skin that bothers you, some of that will tighten, but it may require an excision or be removed if it doesn't tighten sufficiently. On the other hand, if you are unhappy because the reconstructed breast volume is smaller than you desired, you may benefit from an implant exchange to a larger volumed implant.

Shrinkage?

There may be some shrinkage of the expanded skin but not a considerable amount.  I try to utilize all the expanded skin and recruit a bit more during the placement of the silicone implant.  Discuss your concerns with your PS. Dr. ES
