Hypertrophic Scarring from Belly Button Piercing

HI, I have my belly button pierced and I have hypertrophic scarring at least I think I do...I've had it for 8 months and I think it's healed, Can I change it out even though I have scarring? I've heard that lighter jewlery would help. The bump thing is at the top..If i squeeze it stuff comes out.
