Silicone gel is effective for surgical scars

Brooke R. Seckel, MD answers: Silicone gel for eye bag removal scarring

I had an upper and lower eye bag removal 6 weeks ago. Now I have a visible scar below my right lower eyelash. My surgeon gave me a silcone gel and said to see him again in 3 months. Will this silcone gel sort the problem out?

Dear Lec,

Silicone gel sheeting or ointment can reduce red scars after surgery. I also use 1% hydrocortisone cream for two weeks applied to the scar 2-3 times a day-but no longer than 2 weeks.

If the scar is red and itchy and raised after 3 weeks of therapy I would consider IPL Photofacial treatments, which are very effective at reducing the redness in scars.

If the scar is raised and lumpy, after 3-4 weeks, then a newer laser scar removal therapy with the Lux 1540 Starlux laser, a non-ablative fractional skin resurfacing laser is very effective, but it is difficult to use around the eye.

If IPL Photofacial or Starlux 1540 is required, you will have to find an experienced physician who can place protective shields over your eyes, as eye protection is essential.

Most likely, the hydrocortisone cream and silicone gel will solve the problem. The eyelid skin is very forgiving when it comes to scarring.

Your scar should lighten by 6 weeks post op, but pinkness can take 3-6 months to resolve.
