Loose Skin and Tummy Tuck

David Shafer, MD answers: Tummy tuck worth it on loose skin for a 17-year-old?

Is a tummy tuck worth it? I'll include my picture, but I'm 17 years old, turning 18 in Decemeber. I have some loose skin that has somewhat decreased. I'm just curious if you think I should have it and if it would make my stomach look presentable

It is normally unusual to do a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) on a 17 year old.  However, after looking at your picture, a tummy tuck is the only way you are going to see significant improvement in your loose skin.  From what I can see, you actually look like a very good candidate for a tummy tuck.  If you are otherwise healthy, you should have a smooth recovery.  Good luck.

Looks like you have lost a considerable amount of weight.  You should be congratulated--not easy to do.  The bad news is that further weight loss will not improve your considerable skin laxity.  The only answer is to remove all of that excess skin with an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck).  There is no definite minimal age.  Surgeons look at overall physical condition, degree of skin laxity, and maturity when deciding who and who not to operate on.  If you're healthy and have realistic expectations and are willing to accept a scar, looks like you might be a very good surgical candidate.  Your abdomen would look significantly better following a tummy tuck!  Good luck!

Hi!

The problem is that you may want to have children in the future.  You can have a normal pregnancy after a tummy tuck, but  pregnancy will undo most of the improvement of a tummy tuck.

As long as you understand clearly that you will probably want another one after you are finished with babies, it is ok to have a tummy tuck now.  It should give you a big improvement.

You have a lot of excess skin and only removing it will improve your abdominal appearance. We usually like to save tummy tucks for people who have had their kids, but eventhough you are young, a Tummy Tuck will help you.

Hi, you do appear to have lost a significant amount of weight which has left you with loose skin and stretch marks.  A tummy tuck will flatten your abdomen, but the trade-off is that you will require a long incision along the lower abdomen.  This can be concealed in most clothing.  Good luck, /nsn.
