Thank you for your question.

Interestingly, this question frequently arises. The short answer is that there is no long term side effects to laser hair removal or any other type of laser treatment. Laser treatments use light in the visible or infrared spectrum, and these wavelengths are not the ones that cause cancer (like xrays, cosmic rays, or ultraviolet rays). Also, the penetration of the laser is minimal and does not cause damage to the soft tissues.

So, you have nothing to worry about. There have been no long term side effects identified and there have been no studies to show long term harmful effects to-date.

Hope this helps!

The most common side effect from laser hair removal is a blister.  Burns and hypopigmentation are also possible but less common.  Several important factors in trying to avoid have a side effect from laser hair removal:

  • Make sure the laser being used is ideal for your skin type.
  • Make sure proper cooling is utilized for the surface of the skin.
  • Make sure you do not tan or take photosensitizing drugs before the treatment.
  • Make sure you choose an experienced practitioner and ask lots of questions.
