A nonsurgical rhinoplasty is not a rhinoplasty

Scott Trimas, MD answers: Do nonsurgical nose jobs work?

I am unhappy with my nose, but I can't afford rhinoplasty surgery.  I am considering a non-surgical option but don't know much about it other than that it is supposed to be less expensive than plastic surgery.  What exactly is a non-surgical nose job?  Do the results last?

By definition, a rhinoplasty is a permanent alteration to the nasal structures which changes the appearance of a nose.

Fillers can be injected to create a temporary effect by hiding bumps, enlarging a small nose, or filling in a depression. It will have no positive effects on improving breathing if that is also a desired result.

Some fillers that can be used for a nonsurgical augmentation include restylane or juvederm or radiesse. The duration of these fillers can be from 6 months to 18 months if one is lucky. However, the desired effect is temporary and must be repeated.

A large nose that needs to be reduced cannot be treated in this fashion and injectable fillers work best for noses that need augmentation and not reduction.

A: Some fillers ARE permanent for non-surgical rhinoplasty

Just to be clear, it is UNTRUE that all fillers are temporary. Artefill is a PERMANENT filler that I have used with good success for non-surgical rhinoplasty.

Prior to having a permanent filler available, I would not have recommended non-surgical rhinoplasty since it seems silly to temporarily correct what could otherwise be permanently corrected. Even from a cost standpoint, the temporary fillers eventually eclipse the cost of a surgical rhinoplasty in time.

However, as my colleagues allude, non-surgical rhinoplasty--the use of fillers--is really only for select cases where dents, depressions and asymmetries can be filled in. But for those select patients, it's a pretty amazing thing to be able to enhance their appearance with so little downtime, cost, and complexity.

All the best,
