Can I Get Ankle Liposuction?

Thank you for your question.  Liposuction is a particularly effective means of sculpting areas with underlying bony anatomy - ankles and knees in particular.  The already relatively small amount of fat in these regions can be nearly completely removed by liposuction, resulting in beautifully sculpted lower extremities.  Due to the somewhat delicate anatomy, however, this should only be performed by a board certified plastic surgeon with experience working on these areas.

When we perform liposuction to the lower legs, microcannulas are used to remove fat very superficially without damaging the tissue or causing any scars or irregularities. Multiple energy devices are used to melt fat and tighten skin, which is especially needed in this small, sensitive area. Precision and skill is vital to get the best outcomes.
Coolsculpting and Kybella are non-surgical options that can also be used for fat reduction in the knees.

Liposuction
can be performed to treat areas of localized fat deposition around the ankles.

This area is difficult to liposuction because of the general paucity of subcutaneous fat in this area.  Also, this area is subjected to gravitational swelling which will take a long time to resolve.   

If there are fatty deposits there, they can be liposuctioned safely if the surgeon has experience in this area.

In selected patients it’s possible to perform
liposuction on the ankles with excellent results. These results are dependent
upon proper patient selection. Careful analysis of the
bone, muscle, fat, and skin are critical components of the selection process.

Although the results of ankle liposuction can be
good, this procedure is associated with significant prolonged postoperative
swelling. For this reason, it’s important that your surgeon be board-certified
and have experience with this operative procedure. 

Of course liposuction can be done at the ankles.  My plan would be to use small cannulas to avoid skin irritation in the deep dermis.

If there is a reasonable amount of fat there, liposuction of the calves and ankles can give rewarding results. The key to success is using small cannulas and being diligent to reduce edema through elevation and compression after surgery.

Contouring of the ankles and calves is possible, but in my experience reliably good outcomes with comfortable recovery periods in this area require particularly careful attention to detail in technique and especially in the postoperative management, as the skin and tissues are prone to edema (swelling) and slow healing.

Trust your body and your safety to a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon (make sure their certification is by The American Board of Plastic Surgery) and you should be able to safely approximate your goals.
