Is Smart Lipo Under the Chin and Neck Painful?

I am having smart lipo on my chin and neck area in a couple of weeks. I need real honesty here. Is the procedure going to be painful under local anesthesia? Can you feel what's going on? And now I'm reading about not being able to smile afterwards and prolonged swelling. Should I be concerned??

A: Smart Lipo in Chin/Neck area Painful?

Smart Lipo in this area is quite effective and gives good results for appropriately selected patients. It is usually done under tumescent anesthesia (local) and intravenous or conscious (twilight) sedation. If you are not getting the sedation component then yes you will be fully awake, and you will definitely feel what is going on. The tumescent anesthesia should make it not be painful, although some parts of the procedure will hurt until the tumescent takes effect. I think it is only kind and gentle to get the IV sedation component as well. Then you will neither feel nor remember anything. Make sure that you are having this done by a board certified Real Plastic Surgeon who has the capability of doing this for you properly.

You will be quite swollen immediately after the procedure and this will begin to resolve in couple of days, but you can expect to be noticeably swollen for up to two weeks. There is a small risk to injury of the marginal mandibular nerve resulting in a crooked smile, and this should have been discussed with you by your surgeon. This is almost always temporary but can last several weeks.

What is the Success Rate of Smart Lip when Compared to Traditional Liposuction Techniques?

What areas of the body does Smart Lipo have by far the best results over other other procedures?

A: Laser liposuction vs traditional liposuction

A substantial amount of the laser liposuction procedures being performed are not being done by real plastic surgeons.  As such, the training of these doctors may be deficient and they may not even be surgeons at all.  Thus, many bad results are being seen from laser liposuction clinics.

Also, the most important aspects in getting a great liposuction result are not the technology, but rather, the skill of the surgeon, the quality of the patient's skin, the focus on high points rather than general obesity, and the need to stay relatively conservative keeping some fat on the skin for smooth healing.

Is It Possible to Remove All the Excess Fat in the Tummy Area at One Time with Smart Lipo?

How often is smart lipo repeated to get close to an ideal amount of fat removed from the belly?

A: Be careful of overdone liposuction

"Taking all the excess fat" is almost a sure way to get an overdone liposuction result with dents and grooves and contour irregularitites that are virtually impossible to fix.  One of the problems with laser liposuction technology is that the practitioners are encouraged to go close under your skin in the hopes that the heat will make the skin shrink more than nature would allow.  This has led to countless problems I have seen in patients who are seeking second opinions unhappy with their overdone results.  Conservative liposuction plus diet and exercise wins every time IMO.
