I Read That Fat Cells Come Back After Liposuction and Tummy Tuck. Is Weight Loss Harder?

I'm considering a tummy tuck with liposuction. I read the results of a study that the fat cells redistribute after such procedures. My question is do these procedures make weight loss more difficult after surgery? Is there a correlation to the weight of the fat cells removed and weight gain after surgery? What is the optimum bmi of body fat procedure for a tummy tuck? Can Is it possible to achieve optimum results from a tummy tuck with out liposuction of areas such as the flanks?

A: Fat cells and liposuction.

The fat cells removed from liposuction do not "come back." Fat cells have an amazing ability to store large amounts of fat. What happens following liposuction is that weight gain is typically seen in other non-liposuctioned areas. Losing weight after liposuction is the same as losing weight before liposuction. Weight gain is a fairly simple issue - eating more calories than you burn. Increasing your basal metabolic rate through exercise and altering how much and what types of food you eat via a healthy diet will burn fat regardless of it's distribution in the body. There is no optimal BMI for a tummy tuck and liposuction during a tummy tuck is typically for individuals with more fat and less laxity issues.

Getting Liposuction on Thighs and Flanks, Will I Regret Not Getting it on my Lower Abdomen?

I am currently scheduled to receive liposuction in my outer thighs an flanks at the same time as a BA, next month. My question is, since I seem to put on weight mostly in my thighs/flanks first, and my lower abdominals second, will I regret not also getting my lower abdominals done? I'm worried I will go through all the pain and work of recovery, only to gain my extra pounds strictly in my belly after recovery and still be uncomfortable in my body. Thoughts?

A: If it is appropriate, go for it

If you know that the abdomen is a secondary area of diet resistant fat then I would recommend having it done as well.  I do not believe in doing only the lower abdomen, as this leads to some very abnormal and poor results. Liposuctioning the entire abdomen improves skin shrinkage and the overall result.  Doing them all at once will also probably lower the cost of doing the abdomen later on as this is only an add-on procedure.  You will also be healing all at once.  Good luck.

Can I Get Liposuction After Coolsculpting?

love handles and fat on top of coccyx

A: Liposuction after coolsculpting (Zeltiq)

Liposuction after coolsculpting is absolutely possible and Iin fact I have done this. Understandably, some patients want more than the non-surgical modalities can deliver and there is no problem performing liposuction after coolsculpting treatments.
