I'm considering having lower and upper eyelid surgery, but from what I've read there is a chance of doublevision, blindness, scaring, abrasion. What can I do to lower or eliminate these risks when under the knife?
The first thing you can do to lower your risk of complications is select a board certified plastic surgeon with lots of experience in this area. It is certainly true that there are risks with eyelid surgery. I counsel my patients to be extremely diligent about elevation of their head (sleeping in a recliner, etc), using ice packs and avoiding straining and bending over after surgery. This is most important for the first three to five days. Heavy lifting (40-50 lbs) should be avoided for up to six weeks. The other precautions I recommend are to be off aspirin, vitamin E, and other herbs or vitamins that thin the blood. With these simple precautions, your outcome is very likely to be a good one with minimal risk of unforeseen complications.
Hi, I'm 31 years old and feel that my upper eyelids are already sagging, making me look tired and old... It runs in my family - my mother has a similar problem, developed much further. Am I too young for eyelid surgery? If its genetic, will correcting it early be good - or should I too it as late in my life as possible? Many thanks!
In my experience this is not as much age-related as it is genetics and facial type. As you've pointed out, some individuals have more skin excess at age 30 than others will have at age 40. I might recommend eyelid surgery but would want to examine you and your skin and would like to see a photo of your mother to give me a better idea of what I'm working with. An advantage to earlier surgery is that you enjoy it for a very long time—especially because results in young skin tend to be longer lasting.
on realself a doctor said you could lift your eyelids up without surgery by getting laser resurfacing. how can you get lasers done on such thin skin? if you don't agree that this would work, what are my options? thankyou!
There are currently are 4 methods for lifting the brow. The non-surgical approach such as Ulthera does elevate the brow. The approach using Fraxel laser also subtly elevates the brow. The non-surgical approach utilizing botox can be used for brow lifting. And finally, true surgery can be used. This is a decision best made between you and your surgeon who has the benefit of taking a look at you in person and making personalized recommendations.
