Gender Confirmation Surgery
Many transgender men who are in the process of gender affirmation come to my practice in the Denver metro area. As a pioneer in the field of FTM chest masculinization, I have performed hundreds of successful top surgery procedures. In most cases, I can create a masculine-looking chest in a single surgery, while also ensuring that the patient maintains a degree of nipple sensation. To avoid the potentially disappointing results associated with nipple excision and grafting (somewhat misnamed the “double incision” technique), I typically use a variation of the inverted T technique (inferior pedicle/Wise pattern). This technique is essentially an extended version of a standard breast reduction incision that results in an anchor-shaped scar (mostly along the fold beneath the breast) and has a reasonably high probability of retaining some nipple sensation.

Paul M. Steinwald, is a board-certified plastic surgeon serving the Center for Cosmetic Surgery with offices in Denver and Golden, Colorado. A highly accomplished surgeon with over 21 years of experience, Dr. Steinwald is known for his friendly, personalized approach and natural-looking results.
While he has expertise in a wide range of cosmetic surgery procedures, he specializes in tummy tucks, as well as breast augmentation and breast reduction, including gynecomastia surgery. A pioneer in gender-confirming chest masculinization, commonly called “top surgery,” Dr. Steinwald has also become a sought-after expert, with an international patient base.
Dr. Steinwald earned his medical degree, graduating near the top of his class, from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. He then completed a general surgery residency at George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, D.C., followed by a plastic surgery residency at the University of California, San Francisco.
He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Prior to joining the Center for Cosmetic Surgery in 2014, Dr. Steinwald ran a successful solo plastic surgery practice on Chicago’s North Shore and served as Vice-Chair of the Department of Surgery at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital in Lake Forest, Illinois.
