Years ago patients didn't use sunscreen. There in fact was no sunscreen so I have many patients today who have severe sun damage from years of going in the sun without sunscreen, and when I examine their skin, I realize that they have precancerous cells. The blue light is a great procedure to get rid of all the precancerous cells on the skin. What happens when you come to the office is you sit in the exam chair and we paint on what's called Levulan to the face. You sit in the waiting room for one hour with that Levulan on. Afterwards we take the Levulan, which is just a clear liquid, off your face with some water. We then sit you in front of what's called the blue light. You sit there for 16 minutes and 40 seconds and during that time all the precancerous cells are activated and slowly over the next day, the redness is resorbed and the precancerous cells are removed. Depending on the amount of sun damage or actinic damage that you have on the skin, we'll design a unique protocol. Based on that you'll either get one, two, or three treatments of the blue light scheduled one month apart to get rid of all the precancerous or actinic changes on the skin.
