Hello. I'm Dr. Jennifer Lavine, I'm a board certified facial plastic surgeon on the upper east side of Manhattan. Today I'm going to be talking about face life surgery.

So many times I see a patient and they come to me and they say, "I don't know how this happened. I look in the mirror and I don't recognize myself. Inside I feel young and vital but my reflection doesn't show that." In many cases, the answer to this problem is to perform a face lift.

What really determines how old a person looks is the shape of their face. This is how we're able to tell how old someone is, even from ten feet away. So everybody kind of, when we think of youth and beauty we think of those Disney princesses with their heart-shaped or oval faces. And this is what we really associate with the contour of youth.

So when you get older, what happens to your face is it becomes more rectangular. There is laxity around the jawline, there is weakness in the neck, and that is something that can only be fixed with a face lift.

So the surgery really begins with a consultation. When I see anybody who is interested in having a face lift, I, of course, want to address all of the concerns that a patient may have. Because often, with changes that occur with aging, there are changes to the skin, to the soft tissues, as well as the deeper structures of the face. And we really want to make sure that if you're going to go undergo a procedure like a surgery, that we really have the most natural and beautiful result that we can.
