In my practice, we use compression garments for six weeks. Initially it helps a lot with pain, and reducing the swelling and edema after surgery. After the initial recovery period is over, it really helps with shaping. Again, a lot of it is for comfort because the patients have found that if you take the garments off too soon, they feel really uncomfortable, and their skin feels tight. It's for comfort, shaping, and to decrease edema, and speed recovery.
