Phaedra Parks: After dramatic weight loss, as a woman, I have heard about women who have issues with their mons and labial area. Educate me on what can be done.
Dr. Robert Centeno: That's a wonderful question. Unfortunately it's a very sensitive topic for a lot of weight loss patients. They are often embarrassed to ask. in my practice, I like to bring that issue right up front.
What happens is as you gain weight it stretches tissues everywhere and that includes the mons or the genital area. The mons is the area right above the pubic bone. So the tissues get stretched out. When you lose weight, it doesn't retract. that area needs to be addressed at the time of either a tummy tuck, body lift, or a thigh lift so that you get the best outcome, finally. You don't want to have nice, tight tummy and a big bulge in your underwear.
Typically what we do is either a vertical mons reduction or a horizontal mons reduction. We'll combine that with liposuction. We even do labial reduction, so either reducing the labia majora or labia minora so that the entire genital area is appropriately contoured.
