A vasectomy is a surgical procedure that acts as a permanent form of birth control for men. During the procedure, one or two small openings are made in the scrotum and the vas deferens are cut. The ends are then tied, sealed, or stitched to prevent the release of sperm during ejaculation. It typically takes a few months for all of the remaining sperm to be ejaculated or reabsorbed by the body. Another method of birth control should be used until semen is tested and sperm count is zero.
