WORTH IT
I had a very unsightly Giant Nevus birth mark on my left side which I had always been very self conscious about. Measuring roughly 14 cm x 5 cm it covered much of my side, making it difficult to cover easily. Because it was so large, I was concerned it could more easily become cancerous and felt having it removed would be the best option. I was very worried about the size of the scar and possible puckering of the wound site.

I had a black large hairy nevus approximately 6 1/2" x 4 3/4" on my right buttock. As a small child until my teen years, my older sister teased my about it. She pointed out that it was the most disgusting thing anyone could have. I grew up very shameful of it to the point that it caused Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. And those action by her ruined my childhood years. I was unable to concentrate on my school work because I would worry that my class mates would see it in the locker room and showers at P.E. class. I wound up failing three grades of my school years. And eventually dropped out of school on my ninth year of high school.The psychiatrist has been treating me for P.T.S.D. because even after a dermatologist removed it in two different surgeries it still left a very deep scar in my emotions. For any one that has a family member or friend that have a birthmark any where on their body; please don't hurt them by the choice of words and actions that you say and do.

The cost was $31,000.00 and was done in two different procedures as an out patient visit of the hospital. The stitches used were the dissolveable type. And reinforced with stainless steel clamps. The first one required twenty two, the second one thirty three. The healing time for both was about three and a half weeks.
I am glad to live without the fear of melanoma. And the fact that I do not have to repulse anyone with it
If I have to shower in any gym anymore. I thank the Good Lord for doctors that do removal of giant hairy nevi.

I had the same experience being teased and bullied growing up. I have a very large dark hairy birthmark on my left leg. My grade school uniform until college was a skirt up to the knee length, I was a church attender all my life and had to wear skirts all the time. I tried everything to cover it up and ended up wearing really long ones and always had anxieties about it. I don't go swimming with my friends and was always ashamed of it. It's saddening that you had those experiences but thank God you're recovering from all it. I still have my birthmark and is on the process of having it removed. I'm still trying to hide it but I trust God that it wouldn't be for long anymore. I'm trying to save up for my surgery and I'm 24 years old now. I feel for everyone who has this same emotional battle because of having birthmarks. I wish people would understand how we feel when they make those stares and bullying.
