Really Think About Your Decision - New York, NY

My birth nose had 2 issues. I had a dorsal hump and my tip drooped slightly when I smiled. My nose was thin, I would consider it a small/medium in size, and from the front was very nice looking. I wanted to improve my profile and decided to go under the knife. I chose a well respected, expensive surgeon.

My nose now has more issues than 2. It has maybe 10. I need a revision for not only aesthetic reasons, but my surgery left me with things that require a revision. Open roof, slight polly beak, other inconsistencies.

If you find yourself pretty and just have a slightly off nose, DO NOT get surgery. It is not worth the risk. I am not any prettier than I was before and I have a nose with even more problems. I read reviews similar to this and thought- oh- that can't possibly happen to me! I now have to start prepping for surgery #2 and this is something I NEVER would have thought would happen. If I would have known I had to have a revision I would have happily lived with my birth nose forever.

Young girls- please, please don't let yourself be influenced by trying to have a prettier, smaller, cuter nose like celebrities because it won't necessarily come out how you imagined. My less than perfect nose fit my face much better than this surgical mess I have been left with. I can't say my nose is horribly botched, but it was not done well and if I could I would do anything to go back in time and tell myself that I did not need this.

I am sorry you had to go through this. I hope you're able to get it fixed soon! Thanks for sharing your experience.

Thank you. I thought I did enough research to avoid this. Surgeon was not on his A game for me I guess. Just want to help others considering a surgery that is not necessary.

Discuss all aspects of nose with doctor

ssbuddy
I was only concerned about removing my hump that I didn't know about all the other aspects. How far the tip would be lifted, how far he was going to shave the bump down, etc. Make sure you know the entire surgery plan before hand and are on board with it. I would also suggest someone with computer imaging, as mine did not. I would have RAN if I saw an image similar to my results beforehand.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience on RealSelf!

Sure thing. If anything good comes out of this, I want to save another young girl from making the same mistake!

Great review. Good on you for being so honest and realistic with many of those who strive for minimal changes/improvement. I'm 2 months post and although it cosmetically isn't perfect or what I love, I definitely like it better than what I had. Your review is very realistic though. It's a huge risk I wish you the best and really hope your functional issues are corrected :(

Thanks. I really just want to help others not make my mistake. I thankfully am able to get a revision so I just need to wait it out and start consulting.

It's amazing, isn't it? And so horrible. I'm so sorry.

Don't base decisions on marketing, no marketing with surgeons

ssbuddy
I went with my surgeon because he had NO marketing and I was turned off by those who had a lot. I really wish I would have met with the guys that have a ton of marketing because that doesn't mean they aren't good surgeons! I also based my decision on bedside manner, this is important but not really in the long run! It would be more beneficial to have a surgeon with an average personality that produces GREAT results than vice-versa and that's what I got. Just do your research people!!! Don't go with a surgeon because they are nice and respected by peers, go with someone who can show you computer imaging and is on the same page as you as far as every aspect of your nose.

I agree with everything here except for the computer imaging. I honestly don't think it's necessary; My surgeon doesn't use it because he doesn't believe in people getting fixated on a computer generated nose/morph because it's not always accurate and usually leads to disappointment. People obviously get obsessed with the image and anything other than that can be depressing. I think that the right amount of communication with a surgeon is just as effective as you describe. They can tell you exactly what they plan on doing to make sure they are on the same page. Mine was very realistic with me and I showed him pictures of the kind of natural result I had hoped for. Based on my result (so far) he delivered accordingly, giving me exactly what I said I wanted and the pictures I provided. I did my own computer generating before even consulting with surgeons but just because a surgeon shows someone what they plan on doing, doesn't mean that it's a realistic outcome or they'll even follow through with it. Being on the same page is absolutely crucial but overall, but I really don't think computer imaging makes or breaks a surgeon's abilities. As long as they know what you DO and DON'T like, you can usually tell if they respect your wishes or are going to go against it and just do what they Think is best. To be honest, I wish my surgeon listened to me less, because I really stressed how badly I wanted a natural nose, so he was very conservative with mine when I probably would like it even more if I had trusted his taste more. This procedure definitely makes us so much more critical though. Hindsight is 20/20...that's for sure

You make good points. I was not critical at all before this. I trusted what my surgeon wanted and just wanted my hump to be gone. I was so naive. Thanks for your insight!

Your nose looks FANTASTIC by the way. I would be jumping for joy if that was my result.
January 14, 2015
Thank you. It's a little droopy from certain angles but I'm hoping the swelling is contributing to this. I'm so sorry about your negative experience :( It really is such a risk going under the knife. Are you going to have a different surgeon do your revision?
January 14, 2015
Definitely going to have a different surgeon do the revision! I just have to find "the one" I guess. I'm certain there are many that could make huge improvements.
