My new life begins

I am back home and recovering. Went into surgery on time on Wednesday, but spent a while in recovery waiting for a room to open up. When I woke for the first time after surgery, I was feeling quite uncomfortable...moaned and groaned a bit, so they gave me some pain meds. Once I got up into my room, I was just sleepy the rest of the evening and had a hard time keeping my eyes open even though I was trying to have conversation with my family. Once they left, I tried to sleep, but between needing more pain meds and nurses coming in every hour or two to check on me, I didn't get much rest. Thursday morning around 8am, I was taken down to have a upper GI done to check for any leaks. All was clear, so once I got back to the room, I was able to have 1 oz. sips of water all day they kept on top of the pain meds and also gave me several doses of antibiotics. The first sips of water were very difficult to get down. It's like they were caught on bubbles trying to come up. I kept the barf bag nearby but didn't need it....until the evening when they needed me to take my pain med orally to make sure I could handle it. It was hydrocodone/acetaminophen, so the flavor was super strong and had almost an alcohol burn. I sipped down the 1/2 oz. dose and immediately regurgitated it. They gave me a pain med in my IV but said I'd have to keep trying at it once I got home. As far as the pain I've been having, it's just been a deep pain below the largest incisions. I assume it's hurting where the abdominal wall was sewn up.
Anyway, I was discharged around 630pm Thursday night and came home and slept pretty well in my recliner. Wasn't prepared to sleep laying flat yet. Today I've been sipping water and protein drink and managed to get a handle on the pain med issue by alternating it with a 1/2 oz. cup of water to dilute. Everything has a little resistance going down, but it seems to be getting easier with each try. I expect a lot of improvement over the next few days.
I started my journey at 320 lbs. at the beginning of January. I participated in a weight loss challenge at work for the past two months to help get me going in the right direction for surgery and lost 27 lbs. doing that. Now, after all that and surgery, I am at 288 lbs.
32 lbs. down and never looking back. :)

Tomorrow is the day!

I have been on a full liquid diet for the past few days. Aside from a dull, persistent headache, it hasn't been too terrible. My stomach hasn't been nearly as hungry as my mind has. Today I wanted to badly to have something...ANYTHING...with sustenance. I wanted solid food. Not even junk food really...just something to bite into. But I stayed steady on the course, knowing that I'm just hours away from the biggest alteration of my life. Tonight I am packing my bag and tying up any loose ends. I check in at the hospital at 9am tomorrow. Surgery at 11. I'm not nervous about the surgery really, but I can tell this process is going to be a challenge for my family as a whole, so that's adding a bit of stress to the situation. Please send any prayers my way if you don't mind. :)
And thanks in advance for your support. This is such an awesome group!

6 days and counting....

I've completed my pre-op visit with the dr and pre-reg at the hospital as of today. This weekend I start a full liquid diet until surgery on Wednesday. Getting pretty nervous, but also excited. I feel like the great unknown is just ahead....although I "know" what the process will be, I really have no way of knowing what my personal journey will look like. Oh, and up until the past week, I really hadn't told anyone that this was happening. Now I'm starting to share with my closest friends and coworkers and I've realized that I'm okay with any of the negative talk. But mostly, I've been met with support and excitement. That makes this much easier. :)
