I decided to get Invisalign at 26. Normally when we think of braces we think of teens and pre teens and a mouth full of metal. Apparently this is no longer the case. I had never needed braces prior to my 20s. I had straight teeth that I never gave a second thought to. They were perfectly fine. One day, in my 20s, I remember looking in the mirror and thinking "where did all those gaps come from". For a long time I ignored it until the gaps became so big. I didn't take any pictures with my mouth open. I would shield my mouth when I laughed. I became so self conscious about them. I went to my dentists and expressed interest in braces. He sent me to an orthodontists who recommended invisalign - invisible braces! Through an assessment, it was determined that I tongue thrust during the night and that opened up my teeth. I had my teeth examined and they sent away for the trays. I received 29 top and bottom trays. They first week of invisalign was agony! It took me a long time to get used to the feeling of having these foreign objects in my mouth and it hurt like nothing else! For a good 20 minutes after putting the trays back in after eating my entire jaw throbbed. I quickly decided to invest in Acceledent - a device that vibrates in your mouth for 20 minutes a day and allows you to switch your trays weekly instead of every two weeks. After that first painful adjustment period my experience has been great! I have has a very professional orthodontist who answers all my questions thoroughly and provides an excellent level of service. The pain has only been tenderness after that first tray and by day 3 of each tray I have no discomfort at all. I am currently on tray 25 of 29 and nearing the end. I have attached a picture of my teeth as of a week ago compared to the first week. If you are embarrassed, self conscious or unhappy with your teeth I would really recommend ivisalign. It is a discreet alternative to metal braces.

Beautiful results already!  Have they also talked to you about tongue-thrusting rehabilitation or anything like that?

No I haven't heard anything about rehabilitation... Is this something I should be asking about?

I don't know whether they find it important, since you'll be wearing your retainer for the rest of your life anyway, but it is something some orthodontists recommend to help you keep your results.  I know PreOrtho, one of our RealFriends here in the community, did a rehab program for her tongue thrust (which also left her with gaps.)  Her review is here, but she only mentions it briefly, and then when I ask about it later, she says it worked very well for her.  You could ask her which program she did. :)

Hi. I have a very similar case to yours. My ortho at first thought I would need anywhere between 20-30 retainers. However, upon further review he determined that eliminating all the gaps completely would means recessing my teeth too far back and reducing the radius of my arch by too much... My plan now includes only 12 retainers and I will end up with still some gaps left. Did you have that issue? Any worries about reducing the arch too much? Your "before" looks pretty familiar to mine, so I am curious... Thank you!

Hi there! My Ortha actually never seemed concerned about the radius of my arch... I'm just about done closing all the gaps and it doesn't seem to be a problem. Good luck with yours!

Two trays left!

Here's a quick update. I started tray 27 this week, which is the first of three overcorrection trays. I'm not entirely sure what makes them different than all the other trays I've been using but they have a + sign on my package.

Perfect!  I'm not entirely certain what overcorrection trays are either, but some of our doctors have mentioned it a little--it might make sense to you, what they said:  Stopping Invisalign Early?

Your teeth look so good! I just started Invisalign to close multiple gaps so seeing your photos is extremely motivating! I think I'll also be getting those "overcorrection" trays (and elastics! yikes!) after I finish my initial 20 trays. It's a long journey but so worth it in the end! Best of luck with the rest of your treatment. :)

Refinements

librariangal
I went to the orthodontist today as I'm just finishing up my last tray from my initial treatment. There are still a few things I'm not totally happy about. A few of the things we can fix with refinements. One of my lower front teeth is slightly rotated and I want to get rid of a small gap at the top of my two front teeth. This was created because of the shape of my teeth. This will mean having to reshape/ shave my front teeth to make them closer better. I'm not excited about this. They took off my attachments and did another scan of my teeth. I'll have to wear this tray until my refinements trayd arrive. Any tips on keeping them from looking super dingy by week 5?

I've attached a picture of my teeth without attachments! Wow was it great to feel smooth teeth again :)

Wow ive just had a look at the before piccie and now - just wow they look awesome!!! Bet it was nice to feel smooth teeth again ;) eep 5 weeks to keep them non-manky. Ive found vinegar soak both morning and nights has kept mine nice - even after 2 weeks they looked like new. But 5 weeks - youd have to be super vigilant keeping them clean. How were/are you cleaning them currently?
December 18, 2014
Currently I have just been cleaning them by gently brushing them with some toothpaste and rinsing with water. I haven't been too concerned with scratching them since I change them every week and they don't have time to look dull. I might get some polident for this set since I'll have it for awhile.

Polident is probably a good idea, like you said :).  You can also use Hydrogen Peroxide solution if you don't like the smell of vinegar--which is super cheap--daily and then use polident or something like it (like retainer brite) for deep cleans every few days.  Definitely make sure to not use a gritty toothpaste if you keep using toothpaste to clean during that time.  Any kind of dish detergent or hand soap (I preferred unscented) also works and is less likely to have grit (as long as you aren't using lava soap! :))
