FUT Female Hair Transplant - Outstanding Doctor and Experience!
WORTH IT
I finally did it! I am a 25 year old female who has traction alopecia. From the age of 7-16 I wore my hair in tight, high ponytails and I eventually noticed that it ruined my hairline and made my forehead way too large for my liking. I have very long hair and lots of it and I guess the pressure of supporting all of that eventually damaged the follicles. Unfortunately the damage was done and the hair never grew back. I’ve been bothered by my hairline for the last 8 years and it has truly hindered me in so many ways. I couldn’t part my hair anywhere but the middle, couldn’t wear my hair up anymore with it hurting, I hated swimming, sweating or getting my hair wet, and every single day I would waste an hour and a half washing, blow drying and fixing my hair and filling in the entire hairline with a dark eyeshadow just to conceal it.
I decided a couple of years ago to do something about it and had 3 consultations with other pretty well known New York Hair Restoration doctors before I found Dr. Boden in Connecticut. I’ve done years of research and reading through almost every post about others having this procedure so I am quite knowledgeable. Not that the other doctors are not good at what they do but my gut just told me to hold out and explore other options. Once I met with Dr. Boden last year I immediately knew that he was the doctor for me. He spent an HOUR with me throughly discussing my options and goals at my consultation and I really felt that he took an interest in me as a person. On top of being intelligent and extremely knowledgeable especially about female hairlines in my case, he has a very caring nature about him and he quickly earned my trust. I scheduled the procedure to be on 10/08/2018 about a year after meeting him and yesterday was the day!
I couldn’t really sleep the night before due to being nervous but once I walked in the office in the morning all my anxiety melted away and I wasn’t really as nervous anymore. First off, Dr. Boden and his entire staff are so friendly and nuturing, they were extremely attentive and wanted to make sure I was comfortable throughout the duration of the procedure. I honestly felt no pain whatsoever throughout the entire procedure believe it or not! They give you a massage while they numb you with local anesthesia and according to most people the local is the most painful part but I really felt nothing but a pin prick shockingly enough. I thought the massage to distract the nerves was such a good idea as I had never read of other doctors doing that. I was able to watch movies during the procedure and I actually fell asleep a couple of times! I was there from 8am-4pm and once I got home I didn’t even need any pain medication but I took one around 11 before I fell asleep just in case.
This experience went better than I could have ever imagined and I cannot thank Dr. Boden, Theresa, and the rest of his staff enough. The doctor even gives you his personal phone number which I find to be rare and a testament to how caring this doctor is. I am so excited to see how everything turns out and I will update as much as possible :) I wanted to share my experience because there is not enough information out there about females getting hair transplants so I hope that this helps someone!

Congrats! Mine is next week! Comforting to hear there was no pain. The placement of yours looks great! Looks like he blended it well to your existing hair. Please keep us posted about the next few days I. Terms of bruising swelling and pain as well as how you plan on hiding it...I’m really concerned about that part. Good luck! Hope you co to us to heal well:-)

Hi Jezabel! Thank you! Wow, that is super exciting! I know its not an easy decision to have surgery so I applaud you for going through with it. This was my first time having any type of surgery but it really was not bad, especially considering the fact that you are awake. My doctor did a great job. I was really concerned about hiding it as well but I think it depends on how low you are bringing down your hairline. I already talked about the issue of hiding it with my doctor and he said I can begin to use the eyeshadow powder to fill in my hairline just as I did before the procedure after about a week of healing. I never planned on wearing a hat or using a headband to conceal it or anything. My middle hairline wasn't lowered that much as you can see and he rounded out the edges and the temples that had been damaged from the pulling of my hair. My existing hair also helps in covering the sides. I will be sure to update throughout the next few days so hopefully it will help you feel more prepared for next week. Best of luck and I am sure that everything will go great for you! :) Xx

Thank you so much for posting about your experience! It was a pleasure working with you and I look forward to great results over the coming several months as your hair grows in. Best regards, Dr. Boden

About how many grafts did you have, did he use the strip method? I have a strong widows peak:(

October 9, 2018
We originally planned for about 1260 grafts but I believe we ended up getting around 1460 grafts! And yes, I did have the strip method. As far as I know, I believe a hair transplant can really help with concealing a widow's peak.

I’m excited to follow your journey! Please keep posting updates and pictures. I had a consult with Dr. Diep for a hair transplant for lowering the hairline. I want to do it but I am scared.... my hair looks a lot like yours so I am very interested in your results!! Best of luck!!

October 18, 2018
Don’t be scared! I know I definitely had some anxiety leading up the procedure but I really had none during or after the procedure thus far. Good for you for doing something for yourself, I’m sure that you will get a wonderful result. Excited to hear about your experience :) Sending good luck and good vibes. The procedure is not anywhere near as scary as some people make it seem. Just posted an update so you are welcome to read about it below :)

Thanks! I think I am torn between the surgical hairline advancement surgery or getting the transplants like you did. I always go back and forth!!! I am scared of shock loss, but I like the idea of the immediate results of the SHA. Grafts at the front of the face for a female can be hard to conceal and will take a long time to grow, but I feel like the risks are less than SHA. I also have recession at my temples and really want to round out my hairline.
How many grafts did you get???

November 7, 2018
As of today I am a month post op and I have had NO shock loss of the native hairs believe it or not! I did have a lot of work between my existing thinning hairs because of the traction alopecia and none of those hairs right around it fell out either. My hair is just as full as it always was besides the hair that they transplanted. I have see good results with the hairline lowering but usually it is for people who already have a solid and thick hairline but a high forehead, if you have hair loss or thinning at your hairline then I believe getting grafts would be better. Some people that get hairline lowering also get hair transplants after the forehead lowering because it can make your hairline a bit square so they want to round it out. Honestly I would say my forehead was lowered about a half inch(?) something like that and its so easy to conceal, I just use the eyeshadow powder like I did before the surgery and no one notices a thing. My friends couldn't even tell I got anything done unless I actually showed them really up close. If you are lowering your hairline more than an inch then that may be a bit harder to conceal but you could always get bangs. I got 1434 grafts exactly :)

10 days post
10 Days Post Op
Hello All! So I am currently at 10 days post op. I cannot believe how dare I say EASY my recovery went. It went better than I could have ever expected.
Day After Surgery:
I woke up the next day and slept great throughout the night. I had to keep my grafts moist and spray them ever hour but that wasn’t a problem as I gave myself a week off to heal. I spent the day cleaning the house and at times forgot I had just gone through surgery the day before. Theresa called me in the morning to check up on me and made sure everything was going okay and asked if I had any questions. Dr. Boden also called me himself later that day to see how I was doing, if I had any questions or concerns and instructed me how to do my first hair washing since I wasn’t coming to his office to get it done because I am a 2 hour drive away. Honestly the staff and doctor have awesome aftercare and follow up and I am super impressed because they really make you feel special and cared for.
For the first 5 nights I slept with a neck pillow and 2 pillows to keep my head propped up to prevent swelling. Swelling is supposed to come around day 2-3 after surgery but I had very little to NO swelling! I had no bruising, no bleeding of the grafts or donor scar- nothing!
As far as pain goes, I really didn’t have any, it was more just discomfort when my pain meds were wearing off. What I mean by discomfort is that the donor area would get a little stingy and tender when the meds started to wear off. The recipient area had no pain or discomfort. I kept on top of the pain meds and took them every 6 hours. After day 6 I no longer used any pain medication.
I was really worried about numbness and how it would feel or how it would affect me but my donor scar has no numbness. The sensation is completely normal when I touch it. The only place I have numbness is about a square inch in the center at my hair part line. Doesn’t bother me whatsoever as I’m sure that will go away since I’m only 10 days post op. The sides and temples where most of the hair was implanted also doesn’t really have any numbness! Pleasantly surprised!
No shock loss or anything yet in both the donor and recipient area, but I am prepared if it comes later on.
I don’t know if my body is really good at healing or Dr. Boden just has an excellent technique but I think it’s a combination of both :) I definitely followed both his pre-op and post-op instructions to a T.
I came back to the office today to get my stitches out and for a check up and it did not hurt at all. Dr. Boden said everything looks fantastic and we are both looking forward to great results!
So far I am over the moon happy. I can’t even begin to express how good it feels to have a normal hairline again. Even though it’s just tiny hairs I can see the vision and not having the feeling of my scalp being exposed feels liberating. Will update again once some more changes occur! :)

Thanks for the update! I just got mine done on Wednesday:-) I’m a bit confused because I was told to lay completely flat at night so the swelling moves to the back of the head instead of down the face but others are saying to sleep elevated. You’re looking great! Are you going out in public without covering up? I’m still in the phase of spraying my hair and putting aquaphor on my scar so my hair is too much of a disaster to go out but I’m hoping I’ll be able to style my hair in such a way where it covers my new hairline. It’s very similar to yours. I haven’t even been taking pics but I will soon. Keep posting please! I love seeing other people’s progress!

October 19, 2018
Congratulations! So excited for you!! In my instructions it said to lay at a 20-30 degree angle meaning one or two pillows but I think I slept at a 45 degree angle with the neck pillow looking back. But your doctor's instructions seem to make sense to me because the swelling should move to the back of your head since it would go down. Yes I'm going out in public and I don't need to cover it up really, but I like to fill in my hairline with the eyeshadow like I did before the surgery so it just covers it up a little and no one notices a thing. I think my doctor said I was able to use it by day 7 but I used it on day 8 and had no issues. I didn't leave my house for about 5-6 days after the procedure since I had to deal with that same process as you and I never styled my hair I just kept it wet and let it air dry into a mess haha. Will most certainly update more! It's so nice to have someone going through this experience at the same time who gets it, I am excited to hear how everything went :)

omg I love ur results I have the exact same hairline problem u had! It drives me insane! I have some questions, I was told the transplanted hair falls out the first 6 months then starts finally growing. is that true? My main concern is hiding the hair while it grows, its impossible! Sure u can conceal it with eyeshadow but it will still be obvious. In ur picture it looks like ur hair is growing so quickly for 10 days post op!

December 18, 2018
Thank you! :) The transplanted hairs usually fall out in the first month and then start growing from month 3-4 from my knowledge. Those little hairs from 10 days post op mostly fell out but I had some of the hairs continue to grow that are about an inch! I have baby hairs starting to come in as well.

Have a similar hairline to you, there’s so little on the Internet about women getting this procedure! Any updates?

UPDATED FROM taral1
2 months post
A little over 2 months post-op!
Here is my hair 2 months post op for those that are curious about how it’s growing in! Most of the hairs shed within the first month but bunch of them continued to grow and are about an inch long right now. Hair is usually supposed to start growing 3-4 months post op so I’m assuming I’m on the luckier side! You can see tiny baby hairs beginning to grow and fill in. The numbness in that one inch spot I mentioned at my part is about 95% gone and pretty much back to feeling normal when I touch it. So glad that I really had no numbness or loss of sensation after the surgery except that tiny area which is back to normal now.
I am excited to see more growth in the coming months. I am still so happy that I chose to finally do this procedure.

Wow! Im impressed with your growth. I think I’m about 2 weeks behind you but I had significant shock loss so I still look worse than before. I do see some very fine hairs coming through though. I’m trying to not think about it and stay positive. After reading your post, I recommended your doctor to a friend and they scheduled an appointment in January. I wish I knew of your doctor before my surgery was booked. It sounds like you had a really great experience:-) I feel like I over paid but I went to multiple consultations and felt the most comfortable with my doctor in NYC.

December 30, 2018
Thank you! :) It' still very early but I know the real growth should kickstart in the next month or so. That's great! I actually saw the same doctor you went to in NYC (Dr. Unger) but I didn't go with her... She insinuated that because I have a history of depression (which I wrote down on my intake sheet and is controlled) that I would never be happy and if she fixed my hair that then I would find something else to fix on myself, and she would feel like an "accessory"... that was really off-putting and part of the reason I did not go with her. She laughed and said "a lot of people tell me I should have been a therapist" and I was like ?????. She told me to come back in 6 months and see how I feel... 3 other doctors agreed to do the surgery and not one made a comment such as that or made me feel like that fact that I wanted this surgery was outrageous. She basically tried to invalidate me and I was shocked that a woman would say something like that to another woman. Plus I found her outrageously expensive for someone that doesn't even have any reviews here on Real Self and in my opinion is not that well known. But as long as your were comfortable, perhaps you had a different experience than I had. Nonetheless I really hope your results turn out great!! Keep me updated, I am sending you healing vibes :-)

Did the doctor actually implant the hairs or did he only make the incision on the back of your head?

February 8, 2019
The doctor removes the strip of hair and stitches you up, and then he makes the tiny holes on the hairline to place the grafts into. The technicians will place all the grafts! This is how it works at every single top hair transplant clinic. I got 1434 grafts :)
Thank you for sharing your journey with the RealSelf community! Please continue to update us on your progress!
