My Breathing on through my nose was partial...

My Breathing on through my nose was partial blocked on both sides. I was suffering from alergies. The nose was bent in shape. Background to my experience.
I played Gaelic football for over 20 years. I then sustained about 4 nose breaks during this time. The last one ( last Summer) was the most severe . I sustained a nose break from a clash of heads. As i suffered a mild headache afterwards, I decided to get it checked. I went to St vincents Hospital. They took an xray and confirmed it was broken. I then had an appointment 2 weeks later. A Ent doctor manually fixed the last break but could not do anything about previous breaks. He advised me that I could be seen by a specialist but that there would be a waiting list. Because i was finished playing competitive football, I decided it would be best to get it treated. At this stage my breathing was blocked on one side. The middle septum was smashed from so many breaks , I knew it would take a rhino/septo plasty to fix it.
I was aware my health insurance covered certain private clinics, I decided not to be put on a waiting list for over a year and instead I did some research on private clinics.

When doing research for Rhinoplasty procedures on the internet, I came across two or three places which seem the most popular. I decided to visit 2 places and have a consultation. I am now glad I went to these places as it allowed me carefully decide my surgeon and who I thought was appropriate for me. My first appointment was about 3 months after my last nose break. I went to a reputable clinic to get checked. I was greeted by a friendly nurse who explained what i would need to get done and she gave me a rough estimate of the  cost. I was then allowed meet the surgeon to speak and ask a few questions. However, this was quiet brief and I left feeling more unsure about getting the procedure. The surgeon was a specialized ENT surgeon but it seemed Rhinoplasty was not his most specialized area. He was only carrying out a few operations per year. I wanted someone who was specializing in the area and had alot of experience behind him.

Finally my second visit to a private clinic was with a Ent specialized who specialized in Rhinoplasty.
He explained the operation process and the different methods which could be used ( open and closed) .
This surgeon took photos of my nose and morphed them on the computer and explained how my nose should look after the full recovery (1 year). In the end I choose this surgeon. My reasons:
He was very professional and honest in his manner.
He answered my questions carefully.
He assured me that he could fix my nose and return its natural shape.
His enthusiasm and his confidence in this area which was backed up by the high number of similiar operations he had carried out in the past.
He was covered by my health insurance.
He advised that I shouldn't rush with my decision and to take some time and carefully choose my surgeon.

This surgeon advised me that he would check in with me the following day after the operation. And he would take off the dressing and that there would be follow up appointments two weeks after the op and numerous follow appointments with me until one year had passed.
Finally , I did not rush into  my decision but decided to think about it for a while. However i decided not to look elsewhere and was happy to go ahead with it with my second surgeon. The main reason been that I felt confident in his ability. I followed up with a second consultation. This time he explained in more depth the details of the procedure and the healing process etc. I decided to give my nose time to heal first before booking a surgery date. So i booked my surgery for May. In the meantime, any queries I had up until this date were answered and to be honest I wasn't as nervous as I would have thought. This was helped by the fact the clinic prepared me well in advance and assured me that I would be ok etc. They were always available to speak to on the phone or by email.
On the day of the surgery i was greeted by friendly staff and in the operating room I met with the surgeon. He assured me all would be fine and I was put asleep. When i woke up from the operation, I had no pain. My mouth was a little dry and I felt a bit drowsy from the atheistic but that was all. I met with the surgeon the following morning and he said he was happy with the operation. He advised me on the medication i needed and how i should rest for the week and basically the dos and the do nots for recovery. I could not believe how I didn't have any pain whatsoever and there was only mild discomfort. This was mainly because my nose was blocked and my throat was dry from breathing. After two weeks I went to see the surgeon to have my dressing removed. He removed the dressing and once he did this I could for the first time in over 8 years breath properly on both sides. I could not believe the difference. It was almost like I had forgotten how good my breathing was before I sustained nose breaks. Also the appearance had improved immensely. He took pictures which highlighted this. I no longer had a twist on my nose and one side was no longer jutting out. I was very happy with the result. Obviously he said there would be swelling but that this would go down in time. TO be honest I didn't really notice any swelling. I had two more follow up appointments since. Each time I can see a difference. The swelling(which i didnt notice) is reducing alot and it is now appearing more natural. I am very happy with the shape and the improved appearance of my nose. Also i waited over 6 weeks to do any exercise. I have went for a few runs since and can say my breathing is 100% better. I no longer wake up in the mornings to find my nose stuffed up also.

From a sports guys perspective, I would advise anyone who has doubts to go get it done. This procedure has improved my breathing and also my health in general. And did i mention the appearance. It no longer juts out and the bump i had is no longer there.  I am delighted with my surgeon's result and I couldn't recommend him highly enough. He was excellent from start to finish, his expertise , professional approach, his patient care, his honesty and his friendly personality.
