So I have gone to this Skin Spa off and on for about a year. I'm always trying to improve my skin tone and face as much as I can with whatever doesn't involve cutting or invasive procedures. I've done facials, peels, I did a series of laser treatments and have a drawer full of creams, potions and lotions in an effort to find something that deals with my oily, acne prone aging skin. I've done fillers (which I love) but a friend suggested I try dermapenning. So... I did. Went to a esthetician that I've worked with for years that I trust, and who has a MA license etc. She explained everything she was doing, from cleansing my face to applying the numbing cream (which was awesomely funny when I couldn't feel my lips) The Pen is like a big fat pen and you insert this thing that has a ton of needles in it. I asked if she was aerating my face - and she said basically YES she was. So think of it as someone with spikes on their shoes walking all over your face, or a tattoo all over your face without any ink. That's what it is.
She did a check on a spot after the numbing cream - nothing. So she started! The pen allows the user to adjust it so that when they are going over tender tissue like under the eyes or next to the nose its not crazy.
No discomfort, no pain. Face was a little red afterwards but that's it. I do realize I have a high pain tolerance (clearly after all these things and a 13 1/2 hour tattoo) so I'm grateful that I didn't experience anything that an advil the next day didn't take care of.
It's a week later and I had 2 or 3 days of peely itchy face and I'm not sure if this is related to the DP or if its just me but MAN my face has broken out. Like a lot. That's a super bummer - I'm using topicals but they are stubborn and big..like when I was a teen . The esthy thinks it may be because we cleared out stuff so its all exploding. I'm starting a facial routine from my derm tomorrow though (just Green Tea wash, Vitamin C pads, topical and anti biotics).
Decided that I am going to try the full 6 MP treatments offset with every other month facial with light peels. Six months is what I was asked to give it so I will! I posted the day after and 3 days later. Will post an update later after a couple more treatments.

I've noticed a positive difference in your before and after picture.

Thanks! seemed like there was but THEN.. my face went bonkers. I broke out all on my chin, and next to my nose with cystic acne. Esthi said the dermapenning might have just opened up all that stuff and brought it up. So... I laid off any more for the time being. We are looking at doing peels now that things are better, ha.

May I ask how much each of the 6 treatments cost or what does it cost if you buy them all at once?
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for sharing.

Just saw that you wrote one treatment was $150, sorry about that. But I have another question: does your esthetician give you anything to put on your skin immediately after the treatment?
December 3, 2015
Oh sorry I didn't respond to your other question. Yes, she put some hydrating lotion on it and she gave me some Skin Medica stuff (I'll have to find the name of it) to use once a day - to "re feed" my skin.

When before and after photos are taken in different lighting situations, it is almost impossible to see if there's been a change (good or bad) or improvement. These pictures aren't helpful at all.

Two weeks later -

So its been a couple of weeks and other than the skin peelys and the sunburnt effect, I didn't have any issues. Now, did it help my skin? I don't know. I can tell you I broke out BADLY within a couple of days. I had a lot of acne on my chin, sides of my nose, my eyebrows and along my jawline. My esthetician thought it might be because we were bringing everything up - I had an apt with a doc who was also a dermatologist coincidentally a few days later. He looked at my face and gave me a regimen to follow. Green tea face wash, Vitamin C pads, one acne cream in the morning, different one in the evening. One antiobiotic in the morning, one in the evening. Said it should be good in 6 weeks. I've had improvement overall but a persistent cyst on the side of my nose - Great. Still no idea if it was the dermapen or just some weird coincidence.

It sounds as though the needling process was not sterile. This is critically important. I would find a trained mircroneedling esthetician who uses only sterile salt water or gel.
September 18, 2015
Was definitely sterile - and she is trained. I watched each part and made sure what was used was appropriate. Appreciate the thought though as it is something to watch for.

Hi there, you will begin to notice a difference probably at about 3 weeks and it will get progressively more impressive with each treatment. It is definitely a process, so stick with it...but it always feels like you look a little worse and then like magic around week 3 or so, you look great.... if any of your after care products or serums used during microneedling have retinol, it is absorbed at a much greater rate and can definitely cause a breakout!
September 18, 2015
Hmmm now that I didn't consider - that my products might have retinol and that caused problems. I was thinking no more... but maybe.. I don't know. I would hate to go through this again!!! auuugh..
April 7, 2016
Thank you go much for this comment. I had the micro needling done one week ago today and I can't see any improvements at all. In fact, my face looks worse now than before I had it done. So, with your words of encouragement, I am hopeful and will go forward with my next appointment in 3 more weeks. Thank you, again.

I didn't post the picks of the breakout - only the right after. I had about 4 months of intense acne on my chin, jaw , cheek and sides of nose. Have no idea if it's related but I just didn't move forward
October 2, 2015
How are you feeling about your skin now. I just had it done only for chin area last week. And I am still red but getting better but I really don't see any changes in my acne scars. . I as well also broke out after the procedure
December 5, 2015
I don't like it. I have tons of blackheads, break out regularly. I'm on anti biotics now. How is your breakout doing?
December 4, 2015
Thank you for your review. I have to say that that was my number one concern: That the derma pen or needles would spread bacteria and other germs across the face causing breakouts or other infections. My feeling is that you can cleanse the face, however that doesn't mean that you aren't spreading germs from whats underneath the superficial layer of the dermis. I had considered having it done but for $400 per treatment and the min number of treatments to notice results is an est. 4 - 5 treatments not sure it is worth the investment...
December 5, 2015
Yea I'm not sure if it was the dermapenning or not - but honestly it was crazy how bad my face got within days. I'm STILL on a skin care routine - I can tell you that a friend did it and her skin is amazing. She's had 4 treatments, but she had amazing skin to begin with. I didn't. So maybe... its better if you don't have acne issues in your past?
January 10, 2016
I thought your after photo showed great improvement....btw I just had micro needling wish me luck
January 10, 2016
hope it works out well!! I would have continued if I hadn't broken out so badly 4 days later. And its taken months. Again, could have been coincidence but....
Thank you for sharing your very detailed review of microneedling. I have been wanting to try it and your explaination of the treatment helps me know what to expect. I have a question, was your tattoo done in one sitting, 13.5 hours?Â
Definitely get someone who explains the procedure to you, and is willing to do a test before they get started. There was an area near my nose that was a surprise as well as under my chin - but nothing hurt or was intolerable.
Oh wow, you are brave! I have a back piece and I think the longest I could sit was 4 hours!
