I've been a member since 2011 and been contemplating on getting a tummy tuck. I've had two babies (C-section) and they are now aged 8 & 5. I have recti diastasis about 5cm separation and a big belly flap that hangs over my incision.. I was told no amount of rehab or exercise will repair the separation or get rid of the flap. I've consulted with a few surgeons and finally decided on one. I have yet to confirm a surgery date but I'm aiming for Sept 2014. I'm nervous! I'm nervous of being put under and the recovery.... my biggest fear is not waking up from surgery. Is that crazy?

My biggest fear is I'll stand up in day 3, throw a PE (pul emb) and drop dead. So I'm going to feel I have to move so much bc I'm so scared, and I'm realizing that I just won't be able to ,bc of too much pain...

OMG. you just added to my fear lol.

The pain isn't that horrible! I will admit day one I didn't want to even walk to the bathroom, but I did it!! Best advice I can give STAY ON SCHEDULE WITH YOUR PAIN MEDS!!!! I can't stress these enough! They give them to you to take...take them for at least 4 days. After 4 days start backing off. I was able to take ibuprofen after 5 days and I would actually just take it in the morning and at night! Also, you can take them 20 minutes before so they don't wear off completely and you're never in bad pain. I set a timer for 3hr 40min and reset that thing every time I took a dose. Even at night I woke up to take them. Also, take your muscle relaxer with your pain pill. If you're like me the muscle relaxer is every 8hr and the pain pill every 4hr so I took the MR every other time. Lucky my husband remembered when I took what because I had no idea! I also wore my compression thights for 3 days till I could get up and move better. My PS said don't worry about walking first 2 days just move your feet back at the ankle and that gets the blood flowing! Good luck ladies...you'll be so happy when it's done!

great tips thanks! I remember after my c-section after a few days i took advil every 6 hours and tylenol every 4 hours. I set my clock and made sure I took them on time but that's a good idea.. taking them a bit earlier. I"m gonna ask my PS about the compression tights.

They'll most likely put the tights on you in pre-op!

I had the same fears...and everything was great! I think it is a natural fear. I had never been under anesthesia, just an epidural during my c-section. I think it is just important to mentally prepare yourself, so that when you wake up you're not freaking out. I had extensive muscle repair and didn't mentally prepare myself for the tightness that was there when I awoke. After a few minutes I was like OK, I got this! Just be strong, and know that everyday will be better than the last! The first few days are the roughest. Make sure you have someone to wait on your every need. You don't need to be cooking, doing dishes or laundry or caring for the kids, you need to be resting. Walking to the restroom and occasional laps around the house is all you should do the first few days. I'm 19 days PO, and just ready to get back to doing what I normally would do! However I'm taking it easy...Dr's orders. Patience is the name of this healing game! Check out my review and I'll answer any questions you have! Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. It feels alot better knowing that I'm not a worry wart and others have the same concern. Congrats on getting the surgery done :) My hubby will be taking two weeks off to take care of me and my mom will be helping with my kids. Do you think I will be able to resume my online studies shortly after surgery?

I would say after about 10 days you may feel up to it. I am a photographer, and I had 2 sessions to edit after my surgery... I'm still not done. I find it uncomfortable sitting at my work bench or the kitchen table for more than. 15 minutes. I've tried to edit in my chair, but it requires my screen be closer and the use of my mouse. I am so the worry wart too...and my poor Dr has figured that out! I have a small amount of necrosis (dead tissue) where my vertical and horizontal incision meet. It's healing, just very slowly... But I think I've sent the nurse a text picture everyday! Lol
June 13, 2014
I don't think my nurse would give me her cell #! Luck you!!!! Uncomfortable but not pain? Maybe I will ask for a leave from school for 2-3 weeks and from work 4-6weeks. Does that some reasonable? I didn't think dead skin or dead tissue would heal? I thought once it was dead - it's dead. I'm gonna goolgle necrosis. Geez, I have to repair my muscles too. I have separation close to 5cm gap between my abdominal muscles.

He explained it as fatty tissue that dies...scabs over, falls off and new tissue is under that. I just showered and a few scabs came off!! The scar isn't as pretty there, but that's okay. I start scar therapy Monday! Sitting at my computer isn't painful, just uncomfortable. I have to sit up and closer to my screen for editing... I feel like if I sit back I can't see as well...even if I pull the computer close. 2-3 weeks is definitely reasonable! 4-6 from work yes depending in what you do. I have done one newborn hospital shoot and I had a hard time with some angles. Not ready for a full shoot, I do too much bending, squatting and such. I'm still tight from the muscle repair, my Dr says don't push it listen to your body let it slowly stretch. Be prepared for your an muscles to work zero the first few weeks. I about died on day 3 when I tried to sit back on my couch! Best thing when you're getting up let someone help you, the first few days especially, have them put their hand on your back and push you forward. If you take their hand and pull you'll actually try to use your abs. You'll be fine! Just mentality prepare to be down a while. Some of these girls are back in the gym 2-3 weeks after. Heck no...even after a c-section you're supposed to wait 6 weeks. Our body can't heal internally in 2-3 weeks. Takes 8 weeks for your muscles to completely heal. Then 6-12 months for all the layers that they separate and all the channels to the lymph nodes and nerves to go back to normal. Patience!!!!
June 13, 2014
I'm a wimp so it took me a long time to recover from my c-sections. There is no way in hell I would be at the gym even after 3 months! I might consider it after 6 months lol. Well I figured I don't even use my abs now... I went to see a physiotherapist and she had a ultrasound machine so we check out my abs. She got me to do a crunch and we could see my abdominal walls pull further apart and puckering. It was pretty interesting but unfortunately a shitty deal for me! yes. patience!

I hate crunches and sit ups! I do every abdominal exercise but that! I have a yoga ball and do them while watching TV! My favorite and one of the hardest...but really works...get into a push up position with your feet on a yoga ball and pull your feet towards your chest! Once you get balance you can do them out to the side...but that takes a while! That is really cool that you got to see that though! I wonder what mine would have looked like! Well, be sure to take your meds and have someone do everything for you the first few days!! My mom has zero tolerance for pain and I'm around her all the time!

You're very young and will do just fine! Your worries are normal. For some (like me) recovery wasn't bad at all and I didn't need anyone waiting on me.

I will try to make this quick and hope to share info to help others

Day of Surgery - super nervous, they gave me a pill to take the edge off of the idea of surgery, got changed, laid down and the next thing I knew I was getting woken up. Felt sick and had to throw up... brutal pain. I made it home but was dry heaving and threw up a few times. So if you are sensitive normally with sickness get something to help you with it. The pain is brutal when I was puking and dry heaving. ( they gave me shots of gravol too!)

Day 2 - still feeling sick, no appetite but was able to get out of recliner to go use the washroom. BTW I rented a recliner. SO WORTH IT! Did not have to rely on anyone to get me out of bed or out a chair. Got in and out whenever I wanted to. Had lots of phelgm and it hurt so much to cough but you gotta get the stuff out or it may cause Pnemonia.

Day 3 - stopped taking EMTEC felt like it was messing with me so I just took Advil and Tylenol around the clock. My tailbone hurts from sleeping and sitting in a recliner. Hubby bought a cushion that alleviated some pain. Still had phlegm and coughing. Showered. Felt odd to remove the CG - felt weak. Had a poop - took collace for the first 3 days and stopped ... however I am eating 5-7 prunes a day to get things going daily which works like a charm.

Day 4 - 10 Pretty much the same but each day got a bit easier and I was more mobile and getting up often to prevent blood clots.

Day 11 - appetite has returned but not 100 percent. don't feel 100 percent either. I've been taking a shower every 2nd day. I don't sleep well at night but I get 6-7hours of interrupted sleep. I don't nap either.

I was told by my surgeon to straighten out my back but i'm scared of pain... so I haven't done so yet. Swelling is brutal and the it just looks gross. Hard to believe that will look decent.

Hi there! I'm considering a TT with Dr. Naysmith. Were you happy with your experience and how are you feeling now? Are you happy with how things are looking so far?
October 19, 2014
Hi there! Dr. Naysmith is very nice and has excellent bed side manner. I felt at ease (and I'm a worry wart!) Today is 19 days post op and I'm feeling better every day. Still hunched. I'm nervous to straighten out and it's really tight! It looks a bit gross to me but apparently it looks great to Dr. Naysmith. I'm still swollen and and I have this glue they put on the incision and it doesn't look very nice. Oh by the the way Dr. Naysmith does drain free TT's. (I heard that drains are a nightmare as they cause the most discomfort) A friend of mine had the same procedure done from Dr. Naysmith and they said once the glue is washed off 3 weeks post op it looks alot better. I do however have a vertical scar which he did mention prior to surgery (not enough to yank down). The office staff Carla and Dianne (nurse) are very nice. The facility seemed like a spa and they were all very nice as well. Shoot me off any questions you may have and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Thanks for your reply! I like the idea of the drain free TT. The drains sorta gross me out... How long did you have to wait to get in with Dr Naysmith?
October 21, 2014
not long at all. I'm sure you would be able to have surgery booked within a month of or two after your consult.

I tried to book a consult with Dr. Naysmith. It was a lot of work to get through to his office (I had to try many times). When I finally got through the receptionist told me their office policy is no patients from this far up island :( Sad. Now I have to do Vancouver I think! Still looking for a good surgeon in Victoria with lots of experience!

hello yucky flap. I'm thinking of having surgery with Dr. Naysmith, does he give you the option of drains?
