WORTH IT
Consumers, please do your homework before deciding. Don't fall for a plastic surgeon office sales pitch. Anyone considering Sculptra should do a serious reality check to decide if this is the right product for your specific problem. It is NOT an instant filler such as done with lips and cheeks, it doesn't act like a filler, and it will NOT give that same effect. But if you have the specific problem that it works best on... it's fabulous!
Always remember -- this injection was created for HIV patients experiencing facial wasting and significant loss of fat volume, meaning SUBSTANTIAL. If you have any normal amount of fat or tissue in your face -- Sculptra is NOT for you, in my opinion.
It causes tissues to build and grow -- which can go crazy in some people, it seems. I've read about too many problems, and I notice in a lot of cases the patient started out with a reasonably full face to begin with. You're asking for trouble. The way Sculptra works is different from anything else, and is not always predictable. It causes your body to reconstruct collagen in the areas it is injected... blah blah blah. I also feel it is not for use in younger people -- younger immune systems are very strong, and can cause strange results. Use one of the other traditional fillers instead. Remember -- this product was developed and studied in people with damaged or compromised immune systems.
I've had 3 sessions of 2-vial Sculptra done, 6 vials total over 9 months -- and couldn't be happier. Going for the final 2 vial round in a month or so, making 8 total. I did have a pretty bad adverse reaction with the first shots -- two Sculptra horns (lumps) formed in the side-forehead injection sites. Like actual horns. Not pretty. My physician did a few steroid injections on them over a few weeks, and they resolved completely. Can't see them at all now. Great doctor btw. The best in the country, IMO -- and I still had this reaction -- but he knew how to fix it, and he did. I'll post b4 and after pics from each session soon, when I get it all in one place.... Spky

Sculptra/Radiesse HIV patient assistance
markysparkyJuly 23, 2020
Just putting it out there so others know... Sculptra has a great patient assistance program -- don't know the actual limits but you can still qualify with moderate income (though not absolutely free, it's way reduced). Radiesse also has a patient assistance program. Use them both if needed !

I've had trouble finding a doctor in NYC who will accept the patient assist program. Do you happen to know if there is some sort of database out there somewhere? A list of doctors who accept it, I mean. I am happy to pay any injector fees..I'm in nyc, btw..just in case you know if one here..

I'd call the sculptra patient assistance and ask if they could do a local search. Or, get the blank paperwork yourself and call around for an injector to work a deal...providers on groupon (long as they're physicians), are always hungry for business. You just need them to sign the form too, and fax it for validation. You pay sculptra after approval (or they send it for you free), they mail your vials direct to the doctor...

Thanks for your help! Best of luck.

I have had Scultpra and I can't understand why this was put in your forehead. As far as I know that is a complete no no. If you massage 5 minutes, 5 times a day for 5 days there should be no lumps but in your forehead that wouldn't work.

Again, actually read the string... there was no sculptra put in my forehead. It's for the side temples.

Don’t go near this dangerous product. It will ruin your immune systems and possibly your face.

I was part of a test group before this product was approved and have been using it on a regular basis for 19 years. I had and still have a serious issue with my face that is ongoing and have probably had close to 100 sculptra sessions on my face. I am 68 years old and have zero health issues and have never had a problem with sculptra. Your alarmist statement is not based on fact.

I also see myself as a long-term user of sculptra now at 6+ years, and like you, have had excellent results over the years.

I have had Sculptra many times (8-10?) never had an issue with my immune system. Even when I got Covid (never got the poison jab) and Covid was like hay fever for 3 days. I think you are looking at the wrong issue why you are having immune issues. The Covid vaccine is more likely the culprit.

The Best

I have all the in-between pictures showing the total amount of filler work done by Dr. P. over these six+ years, and someday I'll lay them all out here... but it's a lot of work ! Fast-forward -- here's a current picture taken today... over the course of my treatment with him, I've probably had eight-ten sessions of 1 or 2 vials of sculptra -- a few of those sessions also had a syringe or two of Radiesse (I prefer just sculptra, but $ has to be considered). I've done a radiesse-only session too as my last one, which was 6+ months ago now. My forehead had 300 units of Dysport put in there about 2 months ago. I'll be 53 in a few months... Dr. P. has done my face total justice over the years. Can't say enough good things. Doing this because I'm so tired of looking at the forehead lump picture ! That was so long ago, and he fixed it 100% ! Cheers:)

How was the forehead lump fixed? I want to get sculptra done but worried about complications years down the line. Thanks for updating!

I believe it's a steriod-type of medication that the Dr. injects into the lump from different ways, stabs at it while injecting. Every time I went for additional injections, he would inject a round of this med to the lumps, and they eventually disappeared. The lump happened at the initial injection site where he put the needle in towards the front, a small amount of sculptra must have come out of the tip before he got the needle to the side temple to start injecting. You definitely have to go to experts with sculptra. None of these fillers are an exact science. You need a provider who knows exactly what to do, depending on how your body reacts to it. It's a great product if you have all-over loss of volume in the face.

Sculptra is a soft pliable filler and must be massaged for up to five days after it’s injected to disperse it properly. I’ve been skating sculptra since before it was approved and continue to get it on a regular basis and have never had a problem. Radiesse on the other hand is a hard granular substance that should never be used where the skin is thin as it can become lumpy and unsightly. It needs to be injected deep and should only ever be used in a flashy well padded area. It can be dissolved with steroids if needed, whereas sculptra cannot be dissolved.

Doesn't the bulk of the sculptra solution totally disappear a day or two after injection -- almost right back to where you started ? Your body then reacts over time to the microparticles that remain, building collagen in response to areas it is placed in. The massaging ensures it is smoothly dispersed in the tissue structures.

And Radiesse looks and works differently. It has a component that instantly fills the area it is placed, in and remains that way, but also causes collagen to grow in it's place as radiesse dissipates over the months, giving a longer lasting treatment. I prefer the slower way that Sculptra works --- but have used radiesse when my allotment of sculptra has run out. Radiesse works well for me too. But again, nothing is perfect, and the more you inject and mess around with your tissues, you can be one of the unlucky ones. I always say only go to the experts with these treatments. My doctor is one of the best:). Again nothing is perfect, but this guy knows how to fix anything that comes up.

More Iike a week, I just got injected yesterday and am swollen and it will be a week until the swelling goes down. I was part of the original test group in NY before it was approved and continue to get it on a regular basis.

Radiesse came out around the early 2000’s and was called a different name, it’s a version of HA which is a hard calcium based filler, it was very granular and there were a lot of problems with hard balls being formed in peoples faces. It was subtly reformulated and then renamed radiesse but is essentially the same filler, meant for deep lines in areas with padding. Sculptra was originally created for HIV patients to fill in the hollows of the cheeks, it is a soft pliable filler meant for large areas that need soft filling. There are no other products on the market that act exactly like sculptra which is party why it continues to be the most expensive. Results are not instantaneous and take multiple visits and injections but the results are excellent in the end for its specific purpose. I’m perplexed that any doctor would use both fillers in the same area, as originally stated by the person who started this thread. Fortunately radiesse and the other basic fillers can be dissolved with steroids if needed. Sculptra cannot be dissolved with anything and must dissolve on its own.

My physician yes, layers both Sculptra and Radiesse in the same session. The "advantage" given is that the Radiesse provides the instant-filler results, and as the Radiesse dissapates over the months, it's the same time that the Sculptra is beginning to grow and build, so the overall result is immediate from the Rad., but long-lasting as the Sculp. grows. I had it done once this way, and it's not my preference. Normal reaction is to look way overfilled for 2-3 days until the sculptra absorbs, then it settles and looks great. It's a bit too much too quick for me.... I'd rather have the products applied separately. I don't like the real high pumped "cheekey" look in my face, if you notice... I have a decent high cheekbone to begin with....

It's actually building scar tissue, not collagen. They just say collagen because it sounds better.
March 8, 2022
No, actually it's your comment that would sound better, if you did your homework and stated accurate information.
September 21, 2021
Just be careful with sculptra. I had a WONDerful experienced and skilled doctor. No problems for 7 years and then I experienced lots of them.
September 22, 2021
I hear lots of comments like yours. Sculptra is a fantastic product, but everyone's body is different, and God help you if things go strange....
September 24, 2021
Exactly. I’m left with some pretty bad scarring and uneven texture. Just be extremely cautious and understand your body could react negatively and there’s not a lot that can remedy the concerns. My situation was that, it had nothing to do with my wonderful doctor.

I had the same experience with sculpture. I was fine when I used it at age 40. Went back for two vials at 45. Then weeks later horrible burning rash in my cheeks where it was placed. Lasted for nine months

As with any injectable it’s only as good as the professional administering it. I’ve been getting Sculpterra since before it was approved, I was part of the initial test group in New York. I’ve only ever worked with a few highly skilled dermatologist and have been with my current gal for almost 10 years.
