Prior to having kids and while breastfeeding, I...
Prior to having kids and while breastfeeding, I had very big natural boobs. I have two kids who I nursed for a combined 5 years, and in the past few years I have started running and working out quite a bit. I assume those two things together are what really did me in. At my largest I was a 32F+ (this wasn't a good look for me), and prior to surgery I was a 32B. Very deflated. I always knew that if my boobs got wrecked from having babies that I would fix them, but I had no idea just how wrecked they would get!
I wanted a natural look, I am more interested in fullness than largeness, and I don't want by boobs to interfere with running. I was worried that due to the amount of breast tissue I've lost, I would need a lift or gigantic implants to get a nice looking result and I didn't see a lot of "pre" boobs that looked like mine. I looked at about a million before/afters on RealSelf and surgeon websites, and went to two consults. The first consultation went well and I would have been totally comfortable booking surgery with that doctor, but immediately after my consultation with Dr. Gabriel I decided to book surgery with him. The consult was very thorough, and he had a few before/afters that looked like my current boobs/my wish boobs. His office will let you borrow sizers to take home, and I'm very glad I did this because I went back in twice and changed my mind on size and sizing down. I ended up liking the 265cc sizers.
Surgery was 8 days ago. Because of the way my chest is shaped, Dr. Gabriel said he needed to do wider implants to keep my nipples centered. I also have some asymmetry, so he said he'd do low 300s in the right, and high 200s in the left. I was really concerned about going too big- I'd much rather be too small than too big- and he promised me he wouldn't do that.
Day of surgery went well. I went in at 6, surgery was at 7:30, I think I headed home around 10 but I'm not sure. I was groggy of course but wasn't in pain or nauseated post op. I only took three oxycodone after surgery. Starting the next day I just took 800mg ibuprofen every 6-8 hours and that controlled my pain just fine. I woke up with an ivivi device over my bra, and I spent a good portion of my recovery time googling it. It uses pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) to reduce pain and swelling. There's a lot of info out there about how PEMF is useful for pain, injury, wound healing, etc. It's really interesting. I've kept it on all week.
Day after I had my first post op appointment. He told me that in surgery, he had to call in extra implant sizes because my chest wall is so weird that in order to match 310 moderate profile on the right, he had to put in 220 low profile on the left! I never would have guessed that they would be that different. Goes to show that the same size can look totally different on different people, or in my case on the same person! I'm really glad he matched left to right and not vice versa, or I would have ended up with massive [RS bleep] and cried. I am also very glad that he brought lots of size options into the OR, and was able to have more brought over from the office ASAP instead of stitching me up with really mismatched boobs. I think overall it didn't even add much OR time.
Recovery has been hard because I've been so limited in my activity and it's making me go crazy. I also realized that if I try to skimp on ibuprofen that I start to get really emotional, even though I don't feel like I'm particularly in pain. Days 5-7 I started to freak out that they were too big, and they made me look fat, and they would be super obvious especially in running clothes. I'm feeling better about them now though. I don't want it to be obvious at all that I've had them done, but they're actually about the same size they were a year and a half ago when they'd already started to shrink from nursing less. Lefty looks good cause that one got the smaller implant, so it's pretty settled in there already, but righty looks kinda ridiculous right now because the implant is high and the lower pole hasn't filled out. I do feel confident that they will even out though and look great. I'm impressed Dr. G was able to take those sad sacks of skin I brought in and make them look like nice full boobs.
I am really anxious to get through this super boring recovery period though and get back to running and the gym and holding my kids. I was shocked and very happy in my 1 week post op today when he told me I could start doing some light jogging! I asked about biking and he said no way. I went straight to Athleta and bought a very serious bra, Moving Comfort Rebound Racer size 32D, and then went on a very easy jog. I alternated walking and slow, slow, slow jogging for a little over a mile. The bra kept them bolted in place firmly. I tried not to move my arms much. It didn't feel too bad, righty just felt super tight. I am trying very hard to follow all the recovery rules because the last thing I want after all this is messed up boobs or to have to have any follow up procedures which would mean more recovery time, but being able to jog a little bit will do wonders for my mental state.
