I have a prescription for topical Finasteride 2.5% (pretty high), from my doctor, in a liposomal gel which contains silicone particles. This gel has been developed by hair transplant surgeons Hasson and Wong in Vancouver BC, in an attempt to reduce systemic absorption of Finasteride. Data thus far, according to Hasson and Wong, is this topical preparation has an absorption rate of 1/18, compared to oral Finasteride. Efficacy at growing/ maintaining hair is reported to be equivalent to oral Finasteride. This is only available in Canada. A 3 month supply is about $250 Canadian (under $200 US). However it's only available at one pharmacy in downtown Vancouver. Other pharmacies wanted 3 times that much. It's "off label" use - that is, it has not been approved for use in this way. However, many many drugs are used off label. My doc had no qualms about it at all.
