First things first: FDA black box warning! I've...

First things first: FDA black box warning! I've been on tons of acne medications and never received one of these before. I regret taking it so lightly. I took this drug for 5 months. Do you know what a tumorigen is? It creates f****** tumors. I encourage you to read the papers on this drug before trying it. This medication is approved for heart problems/hypertension, how it treats acne is off labeled which means it does it as a side effect. This is not medication for acne, and that's not what it was approved by the fda for. Now on to my story. The good; first three months my acne cleared, skin was less oily. The bad; around month 4 I started having issues. For one my acne returned with a vengeance. I went from 1-2 cystic pimples on my face at any given time before this medication to more than I could count. I stopped counting in tears after 10 cysts. My doctor couldn't figure out why I hit this wall and developed such severe cystic acne, so he upped my already high dosage. All the while going happy go lucky injecting my face with steroids (when you get those acne injections in cysts) which the medication specifically forbids. The only side effects I felt at first were muscle and breast soreness before the dosage increase. After the dosage increase my breasts became so sore I couldn't wear bras or lay on my stomach. My hair started thinning. I fainted after walking up the stairs. When I attempted to contact my doctor about these side effects he was no where to be found. I immediately stopped taking this medication and found a new doctor and while some of my problems ended there I have no idea what this medication has done to my body. My ovaries were clear during the ultrasound before this drug so Pcos was ruled out and my latest ultrasound revealed 5 ovarian cysts. So in less than 6 months I suddenly have growths all over my ovaries. I've developed all sorts of hormonal issues such as: worsening acne(all cysts, I don't even get pimples any more)hot flashes, pressure on my bladder from the growths on my ovaries making me feel like I need to pee constantly. I'm always tired but not mentally, it's my body that feels sluggish, my muscles burn doing normal things. Excersizing used to be a passion, now i can't even handle low impact yoga. I am scheduled for a mammogram later this year for the lumpy tissue that has developed in my breasts. I just turned 23. I'm so scared I try not to think about it. My current doctor can't believe I was given this medicine, especially at such a high dosage. My new dermatologist said he would rather treat patients with accutane and has never prescribed spironolactone.

What was the dosage that you were put on and then what was increased too? I took my first pill @ noon today and @ 6:30pm finished dinner. From 7pm to 8pm I have now, gone to the restroom 5 times. Every medicine or supplement gets in my system quickly. I already have muscle issues due to Fibromyalgia. My hair is just starting to grow back from being on Lithium maybe I should stop this before I even get started! !

50mg then 100mg. I'm only a patient so I can't really advise what is best for you but I can say this bladder problems I got from this drug (feeling constant urgency to pee, running to the bathroom for only a trickle) haven't gone away yet and I've been off it for a while. I won't lie it cleared my acne up fast but it was only temporary. I jumped into it because I've only read good stuff but it was likely because I only googled results and not side effects. Good luck!

Well I have to say I was only able to take Spironolactone for ONLY 2 days. The 2nd was just HORRIBLE! I had severe lethargy, extreme muscle weaknesses & pain, felt like passing out and throat felt like it was closing so I stopped taking it. If you have Fibromyalgia or medicines go into your system fast this is not the drug for you in my opinion.

Wait.... So you denied taking Spiro... but you're now taking Accutane willingly? Accutane was originally a type of "chemo therapy"... I took it for 5+ years straight.. I regret doing it so much... I have significant sun damage at 23 years old, even despite avoiding sunlight and taking sunblock precautions. Just interesting to me that you went from Spiro to something entirely just as bad, if not worse..

I was on spiro for five years with a prescribed dosage of 300mg /day for adult acne. My acne was completely gone, and I was thrilled. However, what I didn't know was the long term effect it was having on my body internally. During year five of my treatment, I started having nose bleeds which I had never had before. I also bruised very easily. Long story short, I ended up in the ER needing a blood transfusion from internal bleeding. It was discovered I had Esophagus Varices ( varicose veins in the esophagus ). This was the site of the internal bleeding. Esophagus Varices is usually an indication of a liver problem. However, my liver tests were clear. I can't say when or why I developed Esophagus Varices, but what I do know is the spironolactone MAY have contributed to my bleeding event. The ER gave me a detailed information sheet on Spiro and three of the side effects listed were easy bruising, internal bleeding, and black stools. I had all three of these side effects a day or so before I went to the ER. I was lucky. As much as I liked my clear skin, the side effects were too scary. Never again.
