Not So Great Experience
I have hesitated to post my review because my experience has been completely different from everyone else. I had been having problems for several years following the birth of my youngest child, which worsened as I got older. I tried the Thermiva treatments with my own doctor, but they didn't really work. When I asked her about surgical options, she told me she had never heard of any type of surgery for vaginal rejuvination, which I knew wasn't true, so I decided to look for another provider. This search led me to Dr. Litrel, and I felt confident that after reading all of the online reviews and watching all of the patient videos/testimonials that I had found the doctor that would be able to help me.
All of the reviews state that Dr. Litrel responds to text messages right away, and that is true. But, in my experience was that it came at a cost to me as a patient, because he wasn't fully present with me while I was in the room because he was using my appointment time to text back other patients. When I asked questions, his response was to send me one of his online videos of him discussing the subject, which did not always fully answer my questions. My suggestion for improving this would be to wait to respond to texts in between patients.
When I first met Dr. Litrel, my instinct was that I wasn't thrilled with him, but I ignored that gut feeling and proceeded because I was desperate for a "fix" for my problem at this point.
After my surgery, he shared the before and after pictures with me and I was immediately disappointed as there wasn't much difference in the two. I thought that maybe I needed to give everything time to heal and the functional results was what mattered the most. After my healing time was up, I was less than thrilled with my results. When I reached out to him concerning this, his response was for me to schedule a laser treatment (at a tune of about $3000), which he had told me during my initial consultation would not be an option that would help me.
This brings me to the cost. My surgery consisted of prolapse repair of my bladder and uterus, as well as a rectocele repair, vaginoplasty and perineoplasty. I stayed one night in the hospital, and my medical insurance was billed. I had to pay a couple thousand dollars upfront to finish out my deductible as well as an additional $7500 to him for the vaginoplasty. When I received the EOBs from my insurance, they had been billed over $100,000 all together. A surgical assistant from a different office was used and billed an additional excessive amount. My insurance company reduced the charges for the assistant due to excessive billing practices, and surgical assistant company ended up contacting and going after my employer, who had no idea about the surgery until that point. I felt like my privacy was violated at that time.
Due to the lack of results from my surgery, I have ended up in the care of another urogynecologist that I have found closer to home. I have ended up having Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy, which was a tremendous help and I recommend everyone do this before surgery as well as after. My new doctor has informed me that my prolapse has returned but is unsure at what point due to the fact that she did not examine me immediately after surgery. She fitted me with a pessary and we are trying a few other things while contemplating a second surgery. She has discussed the possibility of a different type of surgery, called a sacrocolpopexy, where they enter through the stomach instead of vagina, or retrying the same type I had before. I'm now weary of another surgery and trying other solutions first.
When I visited Dr. Litrel for my surgical follow up, he made the comment that I should be careful about seeing another doctor because there were many out there that are too eager to do surgery and doing unethical things. I now wonder if this is because he noted the unsuccessful surgery and didn't want me to find out. Maybe not, but this whole ordeal has taught me to trust your gut and take your time in finding the right doctor for you. If I had only waited a few more months, I would have been able to find the doctor that I have now and may have had completely different results.
