Unsatisfactory Rhinoplasty Result/experience with Dr Mirza Firat

I wanted to wait two years post-rhinoplasty before submitting a review, because that’s how long it takes for the swelling to fully go away, and I wanted to give an overview of my experience start to finish.

I’ve always wanted a rhinoplasty and had been researching doctors for years. I found Dr Mirza Firat on Instagram, and although I was hesitant about getting surgery abroad, the quality and consistency of his work was enough to get me to enquire further. He wasn’t offering all the trimmings (hotel room, airport transfer, mock-up of your final results), and his prices were on the higher end compared to other Turkish surgeons, but I believed that meant his popularity was obviously down to skill alone. Before I knew it my rhinoplasty was booked for in two months time (November 2021).

I think all in all the only good thing I have to say about the experience was that the hospital was lovely, clean and modern. Other than that, I pretty much felt like a slab of meat in a factory. I was one of dozens and dozens of girls in the waiting room and being wheeled around on hospital beds, all there to see Dr Mirza. My consultation took less than five minutes (the longest time I actually saw and spoke to him), before he had to move on to the next patient. On the day of my surgery I didn’t see him till afterwards… I don’t even like to think about it too hard but really it could have been anyone doing my surgery to be honest. It all happened in such a rush I didn’t have time to process anything.

After I got back to my Airbnb I noticed my columella was extremely swollen and hanging low. Of course I knew from research that the swelling post-op would be bad, but having that specific part of my nose botched was a concern of mine from the start, and I panicked because I didn’t have a chance to express that in my consultation. I messaged Dr Mirza’s assistant who relayed my concern to him, and he got back to me saying all would be resolved when the swelling goes down… I’m afraid to say that was not the case. My columella still hangs low (it didn’t before my surgery), and that only became more pronounced as the rest of my nose got smaller.

I gave it a year to see what happens, and then contacted Dr Mirza/his team about the issue. Of course his story changed, and apparently it was always intentional in order to give the tip of my nose the structural support it needs. That doesn’t sound like the craziest response ever, but because he never ever said that when I was in Turkey (we spoke about in person too at my check up), I was pretty suspicious. Also, as the swelling of my nose bridge went down, a pretty obvious dip/dent showed up from where my bump used to be. It basically looked like he carved too much cartilage off from one side, and definitely isn’t the level of skill I was expecting.

One thing I did manage to bring up in my consultation is that I was nervous about my smile changing. He reassured me that wouldn’t happen, and although it didn’t exactly, I do now have two diagonal lines/creases that show up just below my nostrils when I smile. I initially thought it was swelling, but two years later they’re still here. It’s even noticeable in photos. I read online that it’s the result of poor surgical technique.

As I mentioned before, I knew I wasn’t getting a 3D mock-up of my results before the surgery, or even a before and after video, but I did at the very least expect photos. Since I was all bandaged up, the very first thing I asked Dr Mirza when I saw him after my surgery was for the photos so I could see the difference. He told me that they need to upload and file the photos and then I would get them. Over the last two years I’ve chased 10 separate times for those photos, and every time there’s a different excuse. Now they’ve just started ghosting me. The photos obviously don’t exist.

In getting a rhinoplasty I was never expecting miracles or anything close to perfection. I just wanted an improvement so I didn’t have to fixate on my appearance anymore. I will say that I’m definitely not as insecure about my nose as I was, but to describe the experience/results as satisfactory would be far from the truth. I don’t recommend Dr Mirza Firat.

My advice to anyone about to embark on getting a rhinoplasty is to make sure your surgeon actually has time for you. Write down everything you want to discuss in your consultation and don’t leave until you’ve gone through everything. If it’s your first surgery, especially abroad, it can be a really surreal and overwhelming experience, but please don’t let people take advantage of your vulnerability!
