Lip Lift Gone Wrong? - Great Britain, GB

I had a lip lift done 3 months ago and at this point I have not been able to see any results. If you look at my pictures so far i have not been able to see my upper teeth when I slightly open my mouth, which is the reason why I had this procedure done in the first place.
My procedure was done from the inside, therefore you will not see any scars at the bottom of my nose like I commonly see.
All the area surrounding my upper lip up to my nose is still numb, in fact i have not been able to smile or laugh widely. My nose is still very swollen as well.
Is it normal that i can't see results yet? I am very dissapointed that I paid so much money for nothing!!

Can you state what the name/type of your lip lift?

I do not think in time the lip will get any shorter as you are 3 months post op. I recommend consulting with your PS about the numbness. Having tightness when smiling at the incision site (if it is near the nose) is normal at 3 months post op when you smile wide. I have this at 5 months post op, but it gets better every month. Other patients on this site have written it can take a year for the tightness to resolve. I do not have the numbness you describe. Does the distance between your upper lip and nose look shorter than before the surgery? Before picture would help.

Thank you for sharing your experience so far on RealSelf! Would it be possible for you to put up a "before" photo as well so we can see the difference (or lack thereof). Have you brought up your disappointment to your surgeon?

Hi can you tell me what surgeon did your lip lift. Also have you discussed your disappointment to your surgeon and explained to him/her you have not got the results you had hoped for. I hope you get this sorted with your surgeon and hopefully get the result you want. Please keep us posted.

Give it time. You are still numb so the muscles won't work right. I had a minor rhinoplasty - just shave down a bump so my nose was straight. I was numb for about 6 months and I couldn't smile normally until about 9 months because my upper lip wouldn't lift up to show my teeth. I could only smile like Mona Lisa.

Have you been back to your surgeon honey? I am so sorry you had such a terrible experience but it must be able to be rectified surely? x

Hi Kristi, I have brought up my concerns to my doctor, he says he will redo the surgery using a different approach, but I dont trust it will come out right this second time around and I dont want to risk further damage.

Hi, sorry to hear you are not happy. Can you please share your doctors name?

I'm so sorry to hear about your terrible experience. I too, am having very bad complications from my lip lift surgery (although mine was the bullhorn/under nostrils). After 3 months of spitting dissolvable sutures, and terrible scar tissue from inflammation, with little improvement, I asked my doctor to excise the remaining buried sutures, and remove the thick scar tissue that had formed. At first I was optimistic, but I had another infection which caused wound separation. It is now been 14 weeks, and I am still not healed - and am not sure how long it will take for the deep gaps to close from the suture separation. Although my doctor has been very understanding and kind, I feel the same way that you do - I now have low self-esteem, don't want to go out, and am saddened when I look in the mirror - knowing I was the one who made the choice to do this to myself.

oh God, why this happened to us.. did you find the numbness subsided when you had the remaining sutures removed? do you feel pain and swelling?
March 25, 2015
I still have pain, swelling and numbness, along with a staph infection, and wound separation. My next step is to have the wound swabbed since I'm terrified this might be antibiotic resistant. I'm currently on Keflex oral and silvadene topical, but not seeing much, if any, improvement. I wish I knew when this nightmare would be over.

I'm really, really sorry you are going through this, but please do remember - if you had known that this would have happened, you would have never done this ... true? Please try & be gentler with yourself ... & release the guilt, for t only adds stress to you that interferes with your healing. I, myself. am considering this op & with a well-known surgeon in England. Would you be so kind as to share your surgeon's name please?

A risky procedure....
And not a natural one, I do think now that cosmetic surgery has( somewhat lost the plot )...All the different and extra types of non run of the mill procedures available now, should be carefully considered before deciding to go ahead...
Remember all of these ops, are after all an inflicted injury, that needs to heal !!
And some patients will heal better than others..

I've seen some amazing face lift and breast implant/reduction etc.results...but look at others and appalling results...Why do you think that is...Often the patient is not truthful about their health conditions or habits...Don't reveal they Smoke..Diet especially...General health..It all will effect results if not ideal.
