Nothing can really prepare you for this. Its an emotional, physical and mental journey.
I am 50 years old and I had upper blephs and macs facelift by a reputable UK surgeon 21 days ago. I booked the surgery because I had excessive skin on my eye lids and the skin around my jawline had started to sag and fold slightly. I don’t want to post photos but wanted to share my experience in the hope of helping others
I did my homework. I didn’t drink for 2 weeks prior and took a variety of recommended supplements plus arnica homeopathic pills. I booked 6 weeks off work and spent the weeks leading up to surgery eating healthy food & getting in to the best shape I could to prepare my body for surgery.
On waking from the surgery I didn’t feel pain just a lot of discomfort. My eyes were like purple slits in my head. My face was swollen and squashed in to the pressure garment wrapped around my head. The skin on my face and neck felt so tight and stretched. My eyes were extremely uncomfortable. They were sore and watery. Sleeping upright was difficult. Chewing was really uncomfortable on the jaw so I ate soft foods for the first few days.
Day 2 was the lowest point for me. I could only open my eyes for a few minutes at a time as they were so sore and sensitive to light. I was on pain killers every 3 to 4 hours. Time moved at a glacial pace and my only relief was sleep.
On Day 3 the pressure garment came off. Despite seeing all the before and after photos on this site I was still shocked by the sight of my face. The shape of my face had changed from square to a heart shape and my eyes had also changed shape. The bruising and staples were brutal. The sides of my face and neck felt like concrete.
The following few days I continued to eat soft foods and drank lots of water. I listened to audio books which helped pass the time. I applied arnica cream daily on the bruising, continued with the homeopathic arnica pills and the prescribed eye drops & ointment. I felt fine in myself and was pottering around the house and taking daily showers/washing my hair. Sleeping upright was tough and I was averaging around 4 hours a night. I totally lost my appetite and have lost about 4 lbs in weight in the days post surgery.
After 10 days, the stiches came out and the staples were removed from my head. I have experienced hair loss around the staple locations at the temples but I am hoping the hair will grow back here. From day 10, my partner massaged my face and neck for 10 mins each day and continues to do so at Day 21.
Between day 14-19, the bruising started to go. By day 19 all of it had gone. The swelling does not however and my cheeks still felt hard and very uncomfortable to the touch. The incisions in front of the ears look clean. The dissolvable stiches in my neck started to to come out.
I went through some really dark periods in weeks 2 and 3 where my face looked so inflated and my eyes oriental looking. I became regretful of what I had done to myself and scared that my face would never look normal again.
At 21 days, the skin on my neck and around my eyes still feel though I was wearing the skin of a 10 year old. My cheeks are still rock hard and unpleasant to touch. My one eye continues to be very uncomfortable. I can’t use the laptop or read for longer than 5 minutes without it watering and my eyes are very sensitive to light. My nurse advises me to use tears eye drops and says that this will go.
Each day there is improvement. The key here is patience. This is something I have never had much of. Here’s a tip: don’t drink alcohol and avoid salt. One day I had 3 glasses of wine. The next day I woke up and looked like a watermelon. It was terrifying. So that day, I drank 2 litres of water, ate a ton of anti inflammatory foods and avoided salt and wheat. The difference In my face the following day was quite incredible – the swelling went right down. I’ve been following this regime since. Drink lots of water!!
The scars on my eye lids are more visible than I expected and still red and angry. My eyes have definitely changed shape but my nurse advises they will return to their original shape. My left eye is still very sensitive to light and feels constantly uncomfortable. My cheeks are still hard and swollen but the bruising has gone and I only have bruising now under my chin.
Would I do it again? No. But at Day 21 I feel hopeful of the final result and each day I look a little more normal than the last.
