A year after beginning electrolysis...

Hi everyone,
I thought I would provide a quick update of my situation and highlight the importance of finding a good electrologist! I am about a year into treatment with my therapist in Berkshire. I have noticed a gradual reduction in the hair growth, but for the most part, it returns within a couple of days and I have to trim the hairs often. It’s very frustrating.
I returned to Scotland for the Christmas holidays. After about 2 weeks of no treatment, I found that I needed a session to clear the hairs. My chin is a lot better but there are still some noticeable hairs and I had hoped they would be a lot less by now. I found a therapist in Glasgow and went for a session. She was shocked that I had been having treatment for a year and was still experiencing the same problem, albeit to a lesser extent. She said I should be looking into BIAE certified therapists, as anyone could get a Sterex certificate whereas those certified with the BIAE have been through more intensive training and know what they’re doing! In addition, she said that a blend Sterex machine may not be suitable to my skin. She performed a 30 minute treatment on me and told me my skin would swell slightly but shouldn’t pucker the same extent as previously. She told me that, if done well, I should have no hair growth for 2-3 weeks. It has been over a week now and I’m pleased to report that I have had no hairs return so far. The area was red and tender for a couple of days but, with a bit of Savlon, calmed right down. Unfortunately, I can’t pursue treatment so far away, but I will be trying to find another BIAE in the Berkshire area and encourage others to do the same. If you go with a Sterex professional, they may not have the full BIAE training. BIAE certified therapists in the UK can be found here:
https://electrolysis.co.uk/member-directory/
I have found, through previously having visited 5 other Sterex therapists, that the majority do not really know what they’re doing, at least not to the extent that it will lead to a permanent hair eradication. I'll need to rethink my course of treatment and perhaps spend a bit more on a therapist who is BIAE trained. Good luck everyone!

I dont know how things are going for you now, but it sounded like you were starting to see some improvement for awhile. I just wanted to say, be patient. My chin looked just like yours 5 years ago and I started doing weekly 30 minute appointments, like you, but it took 3 years before I only had peach fuzz again and took more than a year to really see a big difference! It is a very slow process, but it is so worth it. It's been 2 years since my last appointment, and I just scheduled my first "touch-up" appointment a few weeks ago, for roughly (pun intended there, ha!) 10 hairs that feel a little coarse. I do have slightly high testosterone though, which may be why I'm seeing a bit of regrowth, but hey, it took 2 years before needing a touch-up, and 10 hairs is nothing! I just wanted to give you some hope because I've been where you were, and it really can be discouraging when it takes so long to see improvement. Oh, and in case you're wondering, my lady used the thermolysis method. Be careful with that method though, because I do have some mild pitted scarring due to overtreatment in some areas. If the therapist you see uses that method, just make sure you pay attention to your skin to make sure she's not treating the hairs too long or with too much intensity. Anyways, I really hope things are working out for you by now, but if not, I hope this helps in some way :)

This is encouraging, xxchelliozxx! Two years and only 10 hairs!

Oh! Also, I shaved the whole time I was getting my electrolysis done. You just have to make sure you don't shave a few days prior to your appt. 2 days without was sufficient for me but there just needs to be enough length for the electrologist to grasp with tweezers after they've destroyed the follice, so they can slide the hair out.

Hi love,
Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I use the blend method. However, when I was back home in Scotland over Christmas, I found an electrologist who used thermolysis. It was A LOT more intense in terms of pain and pucking of the skin afterwards, but there was no regrowth after 10 days, which is unheard of! When the hairs grew back, it took longer and there were fewer of them so I definitely think there is something to this technique for me to notice improvement after just one session. I'm not sure the blend is for me. With thermolysis, I noticed that the hairs slid out as opposed to the slight pull associated with the blend, but the thermolysis therapist suggested the machine may not have been switched up high enough if the hairs were not sliding out. It's great to know that this has worked for you! I agree wholeheartedly that it requires patience and consistency. It has been about two years for me now and there are fewer hairs for sure, but I'm not quite where I want to be.

I have received so many mixed reports regarding shaving the area. Some people say avoid it altogether as it affects the way in which the hair grows. Others say it makes no difference. Frankly, because it isn't pulling the hair at the root (like tweezing), I wouldn't have thought it would make a difference as you're only affecting the surface of the hair, not the deeper levels. Either way, I'm delighted electrolysis has worked for you and thank you for giving me a boost! <3 xx

Hey there strawberrysaturdays,
I'm going on two years of electrolysis myself come this summer. I've seen great improvement, but it is disheartening to know that I have so much more ahead of me. I recently added my story (need to upload photos and updates from the past few months) if you wanted to take a look-see. Just wanted to share my comment and let you know that your story, while unique for yourself, isn't unique that it takes a while. Let's hope that 2019 is the year for us!
January 22, 2019
Hi love, thank you for your kind comment! It's reassuring to know there are others on this journey. I am now done to 15 mins every two weeks, so it's definitely getting better, though slowly. I noticed that the hair is meant to 'slide' out rather than be noticeably pulled, so you shouldn't actually feel like it's being tweezed. If the machine is too low, it will feel like it's being pulled. Since my therapist has put the machine up slightly, the hairs slide out and take longer to return. I will be sure to check out your review too. xx

Hi guys,
I am so, so sorry for my lack of response to your messages and lack of updates, but am heartened to read that my journey is helping some people! So, here is my update (spoiler alert, it ends well).
As you know, I started electrolysis back in October. I thought I'd found a great therapist BUT the machine was WAYYY too high, as evidenced by the pictures above where my skin was so swollen after treatment and I had to remain indoors for several days at a time. In addition, because of the fact my skin was peeling and white heads appeared for up to 5 days following treatment, I could only have treatment once a month at the most (I'm not the most extroverted of people but don't really want to spend 5 days in the house without human contact). I was also being told to shave in between sessions, as obviously a month is a long time to go without any treatment to the hairs. Anyway, for whatever reason, I was told that the beauty therapist no longer worked at the salon when I tried to book an appointment in December. I felt really frigging disheartened. Not only was the hair EXACTLY the same as when I started but I was now in a position where I couldn't find a therapist in the area. I resigned myself to having a hairy chin for the rest of my days and having to shave every day or so, while keeping at arms length from people so they wouldn't see it.
Then, in January I decided to give it ONE LAST SHOT. I was contacted by the beauty salon and told that they had an electrologist come in on a part time basis and could offer me a regular appointment. I signed up to a course of 10 thirty minute sessions and decided that if I didn't see improvement after this time, I would give up and save the money. The therapist was an absolute DREAM. She is so lovely, and particularly concerned that I hadn't seen results in all the time I'd sought out treatment. In addition, she tol me that the skin reactions I'd been having were quite extreme and while a bit of redness is normal, I should be completely fine 24 hours later, not a week later! The main thing however was her shock that I had been shaving in between sessions. She said that I should never have been advised to do this, and that would just be like going back to the start every time I shaved. She advised me to buy a pair of scissors and cut the hairs, but not as close to the skin as shaving. I was hesitant. After all, scissors don't make the hair invisible. But I thought if I was going to commit to this, I would have to bite the bullet and follow her advice. So I bought the tiniest, sharpest scissors I could find on Amazon which are actually amazing, and started going to sessions once a week. My new therapist turns the machine down lower so my skin doesn't react as violently as before. I was concerned that turning down the machine would mean it would take forever to see the results, but it turns out that as long as the hair slides out in a specific way without the need to pull or yank it, the machine could be fairly low and still see results.
It has been about 5 weeks since I started in this way. I haven't shaved once in that time and have had weekly 30 min sessions. Yesterday, I had booked a 30 minute session but after 10 minutes, she said 'we're all done, there are literally no more hairs to remove!' This was so great to hear. I had actually had to cancel one session and make it a few days later as there were no hairs visible after 7 days. I leave my skin bare overnight then it looks totally fine by the morning, as if I never had anything done. Now, instead of a full chin of hair, I have about three or four errant hairs but that's all! It is so good to see results so quickly after all this time. The therapist suggested I just book 10 minute slots to tidy up any random hairs if and when required, rather than having a 30 minute slot without any need. I feel immense relief that this actually works and would recommend electrolysis. However, I have learned that hard way that a good therapist is hard to find, and your skin should absolutely not react as badly as mine did!! Most importantly though, DON'T SHAVE, PLUCK OR WAX between treatments. I would recommend getting a tiny pair of cuticle scissors and a magnifying mirror. I will post pictures in a week or so, to show you the growth between sessions now as compared to back in October. Good luck to all who decide to pursue electrolysis!! [RS bleep]

Three treatments in...

strawberrysaturdays
Hi everyone,
I thought I'd send an update of my progression with electrolysis so far. I have now had a total of three treatments. I know some people have them on a weekly basis but I am aiming for one per month for a couple of reasons: it is financially quite a big commitment and it involves some down-time as I have found the area to be quite red and swollen afterwards for at least a couple of days, and I am quite self-conscious about this!
After my first session, the hair definitely started growing back slower, lighter and thinner. I went to my second session and it took only 20 minutes for the full chin area. However, my optimism was short-lived as hair grows in cycles, and it started to grow back faster, thicker and darker again shortly afterwards (I am assured this is nothing to be concerned about). I was back to shaving every second day for the past month. Any less than this, and I felt the hair was noticeable if you looked really close and the area was bristly.
I had my third appointment yesterday. My partner is away over the weekend so I thought this would be a good opportunity to get it done. We see each other every day (give or take) so it is difficult to have an appointment and then have to explain why my chin is suddenly so swollen! I think there is only so many times I can use the 'I had an allergic reaction' answer, and I would rather not admit that I actually have a beard that rivals my boyfriend!! Anyway, the electrologist put the machine a little higher than previously. It hurt but I got used to it quickly, and was actually glad it was a little higher. The session took about 40 minutes and my skin was red afterwards, as you can see from the photo. I was pleased I'd parked so nearby and it's getting darker earlier, so I could head to the car and not get any weird looks!
I put aloe on my skin a couple of times last night and am spending today resting and drinking lots of water. Today the skin is more swollen and pus has risen to the surface (pic 2). I'm not concerned as this has happened before, but I think I'll put some coconut oil on it tonight and hope it looks more socially acceptable tomorrow! I will update on how the hair is progressing soon...

Hi Sorry if it sound silly but do you feel the hair plucked out after or you dont feel it? I had my chin done and felt the hair plucked out and when i asked the elctroligist she said she accidentally plucked a blonde hair too.
January 21, 2018
No you should not feel the hair plucked out, whenever you do make sure that this is not right and that the hair will grow right again as if nothing happened.
The right thing is when you feel the heat of the needle and then when the hair is plucked out you don’t even notice.
January 22, 2018
Hi Amalmounir. Thank you for your reply. I have had three on my chin and cant see much diffetence and keep growing back. The electrologist does pluck some of my blonde hair when she does the black ones as for the black ones they just keep coming back. Have you have it done? How long it took to see results? I try to go as soon as i see some black hair coming up so not sure whats going on. Also i dont have much really but i have some long fine ones too.
March 8, 2018
You shouldn't feel any plucking, pulling or resistance when the hair and its follicle are being lifted out. It's true that occasionally, a fine, fair hair might get caught up in the tweezers, especially if the hair is very dense and in a small area like the upper lip for instance. That shouldn't happen often though and when it does I would expect your electrolysist to exclaim and apologise for the pluck! (and then be ultra careful not to keep doing it!) It should go without saying that we don't want to give our clients any cause for concern so a repeated problem like that would ring my alarm bells. At the very least, I would maybe question my magnification equipment if that was a frequent occurrence.
January 23, 2019
I started electrolysis beginning of this year and have had like 6-8 treatments in a short amount of time. Never felt plucking, my lady came with raving reviews about how good she is. One month into treatments and I’m virtually hair free and smooth. I may upload the pics on here for people to see before and after of my face. Now I’m having her start on my armpits. Also, I have sensitive skin so I had the same reactions as the OP. I just used ice immediately afterward and antibiotic cream.
January 24, 2019
You're very lucky to have found such a great electrologist! I'm pleased for you. I have been at this for 2+ years now and only now realising what it takes to make the treatment a success. I have convinced my current therapist to put the machine up high enough that the hairs slide out, as opposed to pull and noticing fewer hairs return. It would be great to see some before/ after pics of your skin! Antibiotic cream afterwards is also a great idea. I find the area heals quicker when I use this as opposed to witch hazel/ aloe vera.
January 25, 2019
I uploaded some if you want to see. Unfortunately I didn’t get a clear pic of my upper lip before treatment but my upper lip was so hairy and after shaving never ever felt smooth. Now I haven’t shaved in a month and it’s always smooth. So happy! Plus, you’re right. The hairs need to slide out without feeling any plucking. It’s not comfortable having machine up that high but you do see results!
January 12, 2018
I doubt you'll ever see this but id really like to know if it worked!! Your story is almost identical to mine but I have not found someone to help me out yet :(
January 21, 2018
I have tried electrotsis after reading her story and it is way too effective than laser and ot acctually works. Though its a bot costy and painful.
So try as hard as you can to search for a good elecrtologist, thats what I did and it was like a miracle when i found one.
February 23, 2018
So, so glad you've seen results with electrolysis! You're right, it's all about finding a good therapist :)
February 23, 2018
Hi love, please see my updated review regarding my results. It's been a long journey but I'm coming to the end of it. I have tried four different therapists and finally found one who is good at what she does so there is a lot of trial and error involved!
February 21, 2018
see your stories I had to add my own.i started electrolysis .After three sessions it was red and swollen for a few days then disappear. On my fourth session it was my lower jaw and that is where the problems started.I did not clean it with aloe and to boot I used a cream called triple antibioltic and pain relief.I only found out after a trip to the er that this cream contained NEOMYCIN SULFATE is very bad for bare skin no hair and from what it made the infection worse. After a nother doctor visit they pit me on a real anti biotic called Bactrim things are starting to settle down but plasma fluid is still leaking just not as fast and I expect another two weeks before it is totally healed. And also have to stay out of direct sunlight. In conclusion after a session use aloe if it starts to hurt at all while doing it stop at once and realize maybe electrolysis is not just for you.
March 8, 2018
Thank you Juneadams.
You see i never had this problem with the first electrologist but she used to put the setting so high that would make me swell and scab and didnt see much result and was very painful even with numbing cream. And didnt see much results. This second lady(electrologist) i dont use numbing cream and i feel abit of pain but nothing like my previous experience. Although she doesnt have the magnifying mirror/ glass. And these 2 are tge only ones who does electrolysis where i live. I have started to see some results now touch wood
March 8, 2018
Also to add both of these ladies are just beauty therapist and not qualified electrologist.
June 12, 2018
What did you use after treatment? What products? How actually did you keep your skin from breaking out?
