Electrolysis of Chin Area - My Story

ORIGINAL POST

Hi everyone, My main reason for completing this...

Hi everyone,
My main reason for completing this review is because I have encountered some charlatans in my quest to remove my facial hair, and want to prevent others from experiencing the same thing. Hopefully, the more informed you are about electrolysis, the more likely it is to be successfully treated. In a nutshell, I am 32 years old and have experienced facial hair on my chin and upper lip for several years. Initially, I just plucked the area and kind of ignored it. I can't really pinpoint when it became an issue for me, but it seemed to get significantly worse at some point and I decided to do something about it. I had also entered a new relationship and I kind of felt like I was hiding something from my partner by plucking my chin! I am a redhead so unable to seek laser treatment. I do not have PCOS (that I'm aware of) but have experienced significant stress and thyroid issues during my life, which I assume may be the reason for my excessive facial hair. I am absolutely sure hormones play a massive role in this, but haven't yet had this checked out.
I sought treatment in the North of England, and found a woman who operated from her salon at home. She had been trained in Sterex. I pursued treatment for around 18 months, with one session a week. We became good friends and she charged me only £10 for a half hour session. To be entirely honest, I don't think she was aware that it wasn't working or consciously trying to rip me off, but in that 18 month period, the hair didn't really change. The growth may have slowed down a bit, but not substantially. The treatment was quite weak and I never really felt anything, other than on my upper lip. My skin was in a decent condition afterwards, despite some mild redness, and I was able to put on some makeup and go back to work with no one batting an eyelid.
When I moved near London, I had to cease treatment with her, and it wasn't long before I realised that her treatment had made no difference to my facial hair whatsoever. Since I started treatment, I hadn't had a full week go by without having electrolysis. However, now that I was no longer having weekly sessions, I saw the full extent of my facial hair. If I shaved in the morning, it would be bristly by evening and the following day was quite visible (to me at least). As a result, I sought an electrologist in the area. I went to one who charged significantly more than my previous one (around £55 for an hour). She wasn't rude exactly, but was shocked at the condition of my skin and said that my previous electrologist had ruined my chin and made the situation worse with her treatment, and the aftercare advice she had given me (to shave between sessions). She urged me to find out this girl's credentials and sue her! In addition, the treatment was extraordinarily painful and I left with an extremely swollen skin and tiny whiteheads all over my face. It wasn't a pleasant experience in the slightest and I couldn't imagine repeating it. The woman was vehemently angry about my previous treatment and didn't stop going on about it, which made me feel pretty hopeless.
So, that was about 2 months ago and I had resigned myself to daily shaving and just putting a brave face on. That worked for a while, and then last week I stayed at my boyfriend's house (a rarity) and was conscious that if I shaved at night, in the morning the hair would be bristly. It was a horrible feeling, that I am doomed to have facial hair forever and for a few days, I felt quite down about it. I decided to look into other specialists in the area and came across a salon that did it. I thought, despite my previous negative experiences, I would give the salon a shot and if it didn't work out, I'd continue shaving.
I went along to the salon on Friday, and the experience was much more positive than the two previously. The girl was so kind, and I told her about my previous experiences. She didn't gawp in shock about my story, but she did say that after 18 months of treatment, she would have expected to see a significant change, if not total eradication of the hair. The treatment itself lasted an hour and she cleared the chin area (but didn't touch the upper lip. Not sure why). Her treatment felt less abrasive than the last session I'd had, but I still left feeling swollen and red. I wore a thick scarf and trotted home. I didn't leave my room that evening, or the next morning, and finally braved it last night. My skin had swollen quite significantly and was tender to touch, as if it was filled with fluids. Luckily it has calmed down a bit now. I have exfoliated and applied aloe vera often. There has been no hair regrowth in the treated areas, though I have noticed a few hairs spouting on my jawline, where she didn't treat. I have booked another appointment later this week and will sign up to a 10-session course (10 x 30 minute treatments).
I am hopeful that with time, money and perseverence, I will tackle this issue once and for all. I understand how difficult facial hair is for women, and how it can cause a big dent in self-confidence. My intention in documenting my journey is to let you know what to expect from a course of electrolysis and show/ describe my results as honestly as I can. Hopefully from the above story, it is clear that sometimes you need to do a bit of shopping around in order to find a good practioner with a decent bedside manner! Please feel free to ask any questions and I will try my best to answer them xx

Hey there, I pretty much have the same issue and I am a redhead too. I have tried laser like 7 or 8 times, I never lasted to 8 sessions, but I did about 5-6 sessions. I always thought about electrolysis, but nowadays in Egypt ( where I live) there are very few places that work with electolysis, so that leaves me with very few options. But finally I have found a place that still use this method, so I wonder how to know if they are doing it right? And is there a specific machine they should use?
October 15, 2017
Hey! Yes, the trained electrologists here in the UK use Sterex machines and should have undergone a training course. Some are certified electrologists but at the very least, they should hold a Sterex qualification. I'm not sure if this applies to outside the UK though. All I can say is that I am definitely noticing positive results after only two sessions at my current salon so it's worth askng questions and determining if they have appropriate experience. Make sure the machine isn't too high or too low either. Only you know your own tolerance levels but I've found too low to be ineffective and too high to encourage faster regrowth for some reason. Like Goldilocks, it needs to be 'just right'! Very best of luck if you decide to pursue this! xx

Thank you so much.
I wonder how many sessions would I need? And do the treated hair disappear after the first time or do I repeat the process in the same hair?

And does it have a bas effect on the skin? Like pores? Swallowing or burns?
October 17, 2017
To be honest, it is impossible to say how many sessions one person would need as it varies so dramatically and is dependent on so many factors. Some people take months, others notice a difference in a few sessions. The main thing is that you are aware of the time, commitment and money required. It would be worth trying a course of, say, 12 sessions and seeing if you notice a difference. Electrolysis is the ONLY method of hair removal that is suitable for everyone and is permanent. I was so depressed about my chin hair and decided to do something about it. After 2 sessions of a (really good) elecrologist, I haven't had any regrowth in some areas, and the growth is sparse and slow in others. This gives me a great deal of hope and I feel less despairing. Also, it should have no adverse effect on skin if performed properly and at a tolerable level.

Hi, I'd just like to say; we don't all use Sterex machines in the UK. It is common to train on one of these because Sterex run a fine training facility themselves and (I believe) a machine is included in the cost.
Other, versatile, computerised machines are now growing in popularity among the specialist community and with good reason. The technology has evolved a great deal. Also, ALL electrolysists possess a qualification in electrolysis specifically and this would be awarded by, for example City and Guilds, ITEC or one of the other official awarding bodies. The best evidence that you've found someone who takes their electrolysis very seriously is that they belong to the BIAE (electrolysis.co.uk) as, to become a member they have to sit more exams (both theory and practical) - and these are not a pushover - nobody would put themselves through it if they weren't seriously "anoraked" about their profession! The BIAE requires CPD evidence too - another layer of assurance. I hope this helps people to find a good electrolysist.

Who did you go to? Six months in and NO results.
June 6, 2018
@strawberrysaturdays. Who did you go to for electrolysis
January 5, 2020
This gives me hope! It's uncanny how my experience mirrors yours, though I stopped at resigning to daily shaving after a failed attempt at electrolysis. I am also a redhead. Thanks to your post I'm considering giving it another go.
January 5, 2020
Yes, Give it another chance with a better doctor. I am very satisfied after a long journey with every possible method, finally electrolysis was the answer. Now I have normal facial hair and very few too.
I hope your 2nd trial be better and more effective. The process is somehow painful and needs patience, but I assure you it is worth it.

Hi love, thank you for sharing. I really must update my review, but with perseverance with the right electrologist, I am down to visits every six weeks and my chin is almost completely hair free. It takes a while but it's very freeing when you see results. Good luck to you!

I have hair on neck front area. Before doing the laser I didn't have not much hair...but after laser hair quantity got increased and now darker also...it feel me so embarrassing... What I have 2 do now??
November 18, 2017
I have also found laser to be fairly useless and potentially increase the hair quantity. I would recommend electrolysis as it is the only permanent method of hair removal available. It is a bigger commitment than laser but it actually works.

I struggle with facial hair on my neck, chin, and jawline. I tried laser and that didn't work. I'm waxing but it seems to be making it worse. I have pale skin and dark hair so it's been hard. Apparently my hormones are only a bit unbalanced and my doctor said I should try to go on birth control (Diane 35), but I worry the side effects will be bad and I worry that when I get off it, my hair in general will be worse. I'm quite young and this has really impacted my confidence!
January 7, 2018
Thank you for sharing your journey! I am starting this process and your story has given me promise!
January 12, 2018
Hi, I had a lot of thick black hair on my chin and jaw/neck that i'd been plucking for years and years, can't remember when I started - I'm pale skinned. I can completely relate to the lack of confidence you spoke about. I had laser treatment done about 4 years ago and it affected the pigmentation in my skin so looked like I had a mucky brown jawline. The hair got worse gradually after that I think. I've now had 6 sessions so far (done fortnightly) and the pain seems to be getting worse, I don't seem as tolerant as I was before (felt like the needle/probe was burning into my jawline last night). The hair growth is definitely less and a lot thinner on the regrowth. I'm sat here with my swollen chin at work but i'm going to stick with it and hopefully have a beautiful chin this year!! Hope everyone is successful xx

Three treatments in...

strawberrysaturdays
Hi everyone,
I thought I'd send an update of my progression with electrolysis so far. I have now had a total of three treatments. I know some people have them on a weekly basis but I am aiming for one per month for a couple of reasons: it is financially quite a big commitment and it involves some down-time as I have found the area to be quite red and swollen afterwards for at least a couple of days, and I am quite self-conscious about this!
After my first session, the hair definitely started growing back slower, lighter and thinner. I went to my second session and it took only 20 minutes for the full chin area. However, my optimism was short-lived as hair grows in cycles, and it started to grow back faster, thicker and darker again shortly afterwards (I am assured this is nothing to be concerned about). I was back to shaving every second day for the past month. Any less than this, and I felt the hair was noticeable if you looked really close and the area was bristly.
I had my third appointment yesterday. My partner is away over the weekend so I thought this would be a good opportunity to get it done. We see each other every day (give or take) so it is difficult to have an appointment and then have to explain why my chin is suddenly so swollen! I think there is only so many times I can use the 'I had an allergic reaction' answer, and I would rather not admit that I actually have a beard that rivals my boyfriend!! Anyway, the electrologist put the machine a little higher than previously. It hurt but I got used to it quickly, and was actually glad it was a little higher. The session took about 40 minutes and my skin was red afterwards, as you can see from the photo. I was pleased I'd parked so nearby and it's getting darker earlier, so I could head to the car and not get any weird looks!
I put aloe on my skin a couple of times last night and am spending today resting and drinking lots of water. Today the skin is more swollen and pus has risen to the surface (pic 2). I'm not concerned as this has happened before, but I think I'll put some coconut oil on it tonight and hope it looks more socially acceptable tomorrow! I will update on how the hair is progressing soon...

Hi Sorry if it sound silly but do you feel the hair plucked out after or you dont feel it? I had my chin done and felt the hair plucked out and when i asked the elctroligist she said she accidentally plucked a blonde hair too.
January 21, 2018
No you should not feel the hair plucked out, whenever you do make sure that this is not right and that the hair will grow right again as if nothing happened.
The right thing is when you feel the heat of the needle and then when the hair is plucked out you don’t even notice.
January 22, 2018
Hi Amalmounir. Thank you for your reply. I have had three on my chin and cant see much diffetence and keep growing back. The electrologist does pluck some of my blonde hair when she does the black ones as for the black ones they just keep coming back. Have you have it done? How long it took to see results? I try to go as soon as i see some black hair coming up so not sure whats going on. Also i dont have much really but i have some long fine ones too.
March 8, 2018
You shouldn't feel any plucking, pulling or resistance when the hair and its follicle are being lifted out. It's true that occasionally, a fine, fair hair might get caught up in the tweezers, especially if the hair is very dense and in a small area like the upper lip for instance. That shouldn't happen often though and when it does I would expect your electrolysist to exclaim and apologise for the pluck! (and then be ultra careful not to keep doing it!) It should go without saying that we don't want to give our clients any cause for concern so a repeated problem like that would ring my alarm bells. At the very least, I would maybe question my magnification equipment if that was a frequent occurrence.

I started electrolysis beginning of this year and have had like 6-8 treatments in a short amount of time. Never felt plucking, my lady came with raving reviews about how good she is. One month into treatments and I’m virtually hair free and smooth. I may upload the pics on here for people to see before and after of my face. Now I’m having her start on my armpits. Also, I have sensitive skin so I had the same reactions as the OP. I just used ice immediately afterward and antibiotic cream.
January 24, 2019
You're very lucky to have found such a great electrologist! I'm pleased for you. I have been at this for 2+ years now and only now realising what it takes to make the treatment a success. I have convinced my current therapist to put the machine up high enough that the hairs slide out, as opposed to pull and noticing fewer hairs return. It would be great to see some before/ after pics of your skin! Antibiotic cream afterwards is also a great idea. I find the area heals quicker when I use this as opposed to witch hazel/ aloe vera.
January 25, 2019
I uploaded some if you want to see. Unfortunately I didn’t get a clear pic of my upper lip before treatment but my upper lip was so hairy and after shaving never ever felt smooth. Now I haven’t shaved in a month and it’s always smooth. So happy! Plus, you’re right. The hairs need to slide out without feeling any plucking. It’s not comfortable having machine up that high but you do see results!
January 12, 2018
I doubt you'll ever see this but id really like to know if it worked!! Your story is almost identical to mine but I have not found someone to help me out yet :(
January 21, 2018
I have tried electrotsis after reading her story and it is way too effective than laser and ot acctually works. Though its a bot costy and painful.
So try as hard as you can to search for a good elecrtologist, thats what I did and it was like a miracle when i found one.
February 23, 2018
So, so glad you've seen results with electrolysis! You're right, it's all about finding a good therapist :)
February 23, 2018
Hi love, please see my updated review regarding my results. It's been a long journey but I'm coming to the end of it. I have tried four different therapists and finally found one who is good at what she does so there is a lot of trial and error involved!
February 21, 2018
see your stories I had to add my own.i started electrolysis .After three sessions it was red and swollen for a few days then disappear. On my fourth session it was my lower jaw and that is where the problems started.I did not clean it with aloe and to boot I used a cream called triple antibioltic and pain relief.I only found out after a trip to the er that this cream contained NEOMYCIN SULFATE is very bad for bare skin no hair and from what it made the infection worse. After a nother doctor visit they pit me on a real anti biotic called Bactrim things are starting to settle down but plasma fluid is still leaking just not as fast and I expect another two weeks before it is totally healed. And also have to stay out of direct sunlight. In conclusion after a session use aloe if it starts to hurt at all while doing it stop at once and realize maybe electrolysis is not just for you.
March 8, 2018
Thank you Juneadams.
You see i never had this problem with the first electrologist but she used to put the setting so high that would make me swell and scab and didnt see much result and was very painful even with numbing cream. And didnt see much results. This second lady(electrologist) i dont use numbing cream and i feel abit of pain but nothing like my previous experience. Although she doesnt have the magnifying mirror/ glass. And these 2 are tge only ones who does electrolysis where i live. I have started to see some results now touch wood
March 8, 2018
Also to add both of these ladies are just beauty therapist and not qualified electrologist.
June 12, 2018
What did you use after treatment? What products? How actually did you keep your skin from breaking out?
