The Other Side Of The Coin: Underwhelming Clinical Results and Disappointed Patient

I have read so many of your glowing reviews of Dr Subbio, but unfortunately my experience just was not the same and I felt that I owed it to this community to share my experience as well.

I’m a 39 yo mom and was 133 lbs at the time of my surgery. I worked out 4-5 times/week and found myself unable to get rid of a little extra skin and fat from my pregnancy. I had two main concerns going into my surgery: obtaining a natural belly button and making sure my hips had a natural contour to accompany my newly flattened tummy – two things Dr Subbio felt confident he could achieve on me. I felt like I really mattered to him as a patient and that he understood my concerns and my goals of the surgery. Belly button - he constantly stressed the importance of a natural looking belly button and his Real Self video “How to choose the right doctor for your tummy tuck “reinforced that. Hips – he told me I didn’t need lipo of the flanks and that increasing the incision line would take care of my hips.

All that said, none of my goals were achieved. Unfortunately, a week after surgery my belly button started to show signs of infection. It still was scabbed at my one-month post op appointment so we couldn’t see the end result of the belly button but it was then that I started to inquire about the asymmetry and excess skin of my hips which was quickly dismissed.

When I came in for a two-month follow up (now when you could see the belly button healed) I again expressed concerns about my hips and now the result of my belly button. I was told he was too busy to see me, but that I should rest assured that I could set up a zoom or get live with him ASAP. We played phone tag for three weeks. I eventually wrote an email to the nurse asking her to forward it along and I was told to come in so he could remove a piece of scar tissue from my belly button. At this point I was still holding out hope that he would validate my concerns that a natural contour of my hips was not achieved.

At the appointment to remove the scar tissue he did acknowledge that my left hip was larger than my right and had excess fat and he scheduled an in office procedure for a few months later (I thought we were getting somewhere and left hopeful with an action plan for correction).

The straw that broke the camel’s back for me came at my last meeting with Dr. Subbio to analyze results after he removed a sizeable piece of scar tissue (shown in photos) which had me regret ever working with him. He cancelled the procedure that was scheduled to fix my hip contour and instead pretty much pushed me out as a patient. He simply said, ‘you look great’ and refused to acknowledge the poor cosmetic outcome. He did however go on to tell me ‘your hips are a limitation of the surgery’ (how confusing for a patient when 2 weeks ago he told you something completely different) and that I should get a second opinion…NOT something you want to find yourself doing after all the research, time, pain and money spent. I did go on to get two second opinions and both doctors had the same feedback, that a little liposuction would have given my hips the natural contour I was hoping for and my belly button was indeed, not an ideal outcome. In all fairness, my stomach itself looks great (and they both said that as well) however, that is only a portion of the overall result.

I am now 9 months post-op (I gave my mind and body plenty of time to heal before writing this review) and am left with asymmetrical hips with a bulge over one side of my pants and an odd-looking, darkly scarred belly button which screams tummy tuck. I went from hiding pregnancy skin to hiding a ton of money of poor surgical outcome.

Every surgery has risks, and I knew that poor cosmetic outcome was one of them. Reading all the positive reviews, I’m obviously in the minority here, but I felt it was my duty to share my experience as choosing a surgeon is one of the most important steps and this website was a big factor in helping me make my decision. I hope that my story and results can give some other insight in to how Dr Subbio’s practice handles patients that are less happy with their outcomes.
