Horrible & unprofessional experience - ended up healing very disfigured

ORIGINAL POST

Horrible and Unprofessional Experience.

I am a registered nurse and work in medical aesthetics myself. I, in no way, was expecting perfection, but was also not expecting a disfiguring mess that Dr. Capizzi would dismiss and refuse to refund a portion of the surgical cost to put toward an additional surgery that was needed to correct his incompetant attempt at a tummy tuck. During my consultation for a breast implant exchange, Dr. Capizzi told me that I was a candidate for a tummy tuck. He stated he could pull my abdominal skin down very low, so that my scar would be in the natural crease above my pubic bone and my abdomen would be "as flat as the floor" (his exact words). I had very little fat in my abdominal area as you will see in my pic the day before surgery. I had previously had smartlipo at a medical spa where I used to work. Over the years, after the smartlipo, I had developed a slight wavy look to my abdomen with a slight amount of loose skin. I have never weighed over 120 lbs and have never had children so it really was very minor but I thought while under anesthesia for the breast surgery, I would do this as well, since he was so sure of a great outcome. I realize that nothing is ever guarenteed and that sometimes things do not go as planned but when that happens, I feel the moral and professional thing to do, is to try to make things right for the pt. He did acknowledge that the surgery did not go well. He blamed it on the previous SmartLipo but during my consultation, he was very aware of that history and never mentioned that may be a problem for him.
The day after surgery, he explained to me that he had a hard time and was not able to do the surgery as planned because of adhesions from the previous SmartLipo. He stated he was unable to strech the skin as much as he had planned. Only at this time, he told me he has had this happen before with patients that had previous SmartLipo. My scar was very high and within a week the scar had opened to an approximate 1"x3 1/2" hole in my abdomen. The 6 months long healing process was slow, gross and scary. It eneded up healing very disfigured and the resulting scar adheared to my abdominal wall so my skin could not move freely which was ugly and somewhat painful. Long story short, he offered to redo the procedure. I was not comfortable with him redoing the prodedure and elected to go elsewhere to have it corrected. I requested a refund of that portion of the surgery only. His office never responded to that request. I did end up going to Dr Chad Deal at Southern Surgical Arts who did a beautiful job of correcting the botched job Dr Capizzi did. Dr Deal had no problems with the adhesions from the previous smart lipo and was able to cut out and correct the ugly scarring that had been caused by Dr Capizzi. Dr Deal was able to make the new scar low and very thin. If Dr. Capizzi would have responded and refunded the portion of the surgery that was added for the tummy tuck, I would have been content, but his lack of ethics and professionalism made me feel compelled to write this review.
