An Amazing Experience with Dr Baran Kul
Hi everyone I just wanted to share with you my journey of surgery with Dr Baran Kul.
I had a tummy tuck with muscle repair and mons lift and Vaser liposuction to my back sides and belly.
My surgery was on Friday 27th September 2019 so I’m just approaching 4 months post op. My initial consultation was completed via WhatsApp where my photos were shown to Dr Baran Kul and he recommended what surgery I would need to get rid of the areas that bothered me. A detailed quote was sent to me of what the price included and I gave my chosen date to them that I would like. I had originally booked with comfortzone but cancelled them after some very poor communication and service which left me not feeling comfortable letting them take charge of my surgery. As I had already booked my flights for my surgery with comfortzone I was very lucky Dr Baran Kul has my dates available. Around 2 weeks before my surgery an itinerary was sent to me with information or my surgery and stay and details of what to do on arrival etc.
I flew I to Istanbul on Thursday 26th September with my husband. When I arrived there was a driver waiting for us in the arrivals hall with a board with the Baran Kul Logo on.
The drive to the hotel took around 1 hour we arrived mid afternoon so was rush hour, however the vehicle we were picked up in was very comfortable and luxurious.
Once at the hotel we checked in. The first room we were given was a smoking room which did smell quite heavily of smoke ... I returned to reception and they changed our room to non smoking so a tip is to ask that you are put on a non smoking floor level.
As soon as I connected to the hotel WiFi a message came through from the patients co ordinator Burak welcoming me to Istanbul and advising me of the time I would be picked up the next day to be taken to the hospital and most importantly the time that I should start my “nil by mouth” in preparation for my surgery the next day.
My husband and I went for a walk around the local area and had dinner together. Note: There is not much around the hotel apart from a huge university and lots of restaurants.
In the morning we took our bags to check out of our room as instructed and waited to be collected... the patient co ordinator Burak arrived and took us to the hospital in a taxi this took around 20 mins he told us the plan of the day and what to expect once we arrived at the hospital. All transfers are free of charge and included in your quote.
On arrival to the hospital we were taken to a room to book into the hospital next of kin details taken / my passport photocopied payment taken, then we were taken up to my private hospital room. The hospital really is just “WOW” it’s a platinum grade private hospital that had been specifically built for medical tourism. I was given a gown, hat and compression socks to change into.
Once in the room and settled Dr Baran Kul came in to meet me we discussed my problem areas and he went through in detail what he was going to do and marked all of my areas up. And lots of photos were taken I dreaded this part as you are fully nude but I just gritted my teeth and got it out the way.
I did also want inner thigh Lipo but he told me due to limits of fat being taken from other areas this would not be possible. He also told me that my health and well-being is his priority and if at any point he is not happy with my condition during the surgery he would stop and not continue. This really did just put me at ease he really does have your best interest at heart. He has a very calm aura which relaxed me. I told him I had children and I needed to be back there for them. He assured me he would make sure of that. He said he was a family man and operates on all of his patients as if they were a member of his family.
Soon after an anaesthetist came in and took my weight and past medical history for the general anaesthetic. I was also asked if I would like a sedative before to calm me which I agreed to.
The patient co ordinator Burak came in next with all of the forms for me to read through and sign ..... I was left with these for as long as I needed I was not made to feel rushed into signing and they were all in English for me to fully understand. He was very informative to my husband and took time to answer my husbands questions and also recommended places to go to shop in areas close to the hospital. He made sure he had answered all of our questions and that we were fully happy before he left. A very nice man and a credit to the company.
When my time arrived to to go down to surgery I was given my sedative and wheeled down to theatre. Last thing I remember is a nurse looking over my head and saying “bye bye ”
Next thing I remember is waking up in the recovery area shaking like crazy, very disoriented, feeling extremely cold with an oxygen mask over my nose and mouth covered in blankets, with a heater under my sheets and a lovely nurse calling my name .... my teeth were rattling so much and I was slipping in and out of consciousness (totally normal) I cannot remember how long I was here but my husband said altogether I was gone 6 hours.
I woke up in my private room my husband sat on his sofa bed and waved. All I could think about was how sick I felt ... constantly reaching which killed my muscle repair ... this continued for around 12 hours!
The nurses did all they could I was never in pain and checked regularly I was given anti sickness and a lot of antibiotic drips and paracetamol drips... again I never had to ask for pain relief.
I was encouraged to get up and start shuffling around as soon as possible which the nurses assisted, I had my catheter taken out the next day so needed to get up to go to the toilet which kind of made you have to start getting mobile.
I got my first look at my tummy when the nurses came into loosen my garment (I woke in a full body short type compression garment with a white binder around on top.
Me and my husband were wowed already at the result. So flat!
After two nights in the hospital I was discharged back to the hotel.
I was given medication and instructions on what to do. My husband was amazing he helped me so much had requested extra pillows and an extra mattress and made a hospital type bed for me in the hotel room.
Days 4 and 5 post op were the worst days for me pain wise my Lipo swelling hurt the most I felt like I was going to pop. I had anti inflammatory meds from the hospital and also my own paracetamol this was enough for me. The nurses came and changed my dressings on the 2nd day of being at the hotel and also visited to check on the 3rd day.
All was well on the 5th day I had my check up with Dr Baran Kul at the hospital. My dressings changed and instructions on what to do for after care and medication given to take home.
It’s a lot to take in so I’d recommend taking. Pen and paper to write it all down ... I think they are in the process of making an aftercare pack to give to patients at this point.
More photos were taken and I was shown my surgery videos and photos.
My flight home was the next day (6 days post op) - a week after arriving in Istanbul.
By day 6 I felt I had turned a corner! I was able to walk through the airport I had booked assistance but I didn’t feel I needed it ... I wanted to shop and if you have the assistance you are kind of sat into a holding pen and then taken straight to your gate being pushed in a chair by a porter type person on a Segway so your partner can’t go with you. So I decided to walk and just sit when I needed. I was fine. There are lots of high end designer shops in the terminal it’s a very new airport and lots to see inside.
We boarded our flight I was fine in economy I had kept my compression socks on and not too uncomfortable I watched tv and and used the airline pillows on my back and belly to relieve pressure.
Once landed and home I was so happy to be back to my home comforts and see my children. I had in preparation got an electric recliner chair which helped me massively with comfort at home. After 10 days as instructed I removed my incision tape ... advice is do this in the shower! I did it dry and pulled a little scab off which bled ... in preparation I had brought some dressings from the chemist so just covered the open area. I asked my GP nurse if they would be happy to check once home and they were happy to ... I went to the go nurse 4 days after being back and she was happy with my belly button and other incision and advised me to now keep uncovered and let the air get to it as moisture over scabs can make them soft and risk infection and to keep area clean. I followed all Instructions and had no healing issues. I had an internal stitch pop up under my skin near my tummy button which alarmed me and I messaged the after care team whenever I needed questions answered. I was told the internal stitch will dissolve over time and 3 months post op it had dissolved.
Swelling is bad and I would say peaks at 3/4 weeks then after that does get better. I feel I have been very lucky with my recovery as was up and about and driving by 2 weeks post op. I started having lymphatic drainage massages to help with swelling as soon as I was home ( the next day after getting home I had one booked) and had one a week for 6 weeks.
Also diet helps massively with recovery and I’m sure a high protein / low carb diet is why my recovery was so swift. The aftercare team will message you when home and then around every other week for an update but if you have
any questions / worry’s at any point you can message them via what’s app with photos etc and they will liaise with the surgeon on what to do... for example when I was worried about the internal stitch that popped up I messaged and got a reply straight away.
I’ve included lots of photos pre op to post op of my journey swelling at different stages etc they are all in order from pre op to now.....I’m happy to answer any questions if anyone would like to message me.
I think that’s about it if I can remember more details i will edit them in.
Best decision I ever made and I can’t wait to go back and have an upper back lift in the future!!! I have a lot of skin there that I would like removed that’s next on my list. As I did have the back Lipo there is also excess skin in that area now that will need to come off to get my desired look on my back.
Remember all survey comes with risks, everyone’s bodies are different and will react differently to surgery post op infections / seromas are common with this type of surgery and are not surgeon error but a risk. We should only go into surgery knowing the risks. I was lucky to not experience any of these but I always knew there was a possibility this may happen! Follow your surgeons aftercare advice, listen to your body and most importantly research on your procedures before you have them so you know what to expect.
Good luck to you all xxx
