Hi everyone,

I'm 23 from Arizona and will soon be moving to Germany for graduate school. Since I have no idea when or if I'll be back in Arizona, I wanted a tattoo of the desert as tribute. I found a great artist in town and he told me what I wanted would take three sessions.

The first session was incredible; he did a beautiful prickly pear with so many colors. I walked away loving it and still love it now. The second session was adding three saguaros, the most iconic cactus of the Sonoran Desert. The design seemed fine to me, but after they were put on my body, I was unsure. They didn't look or feel the way I wanted them to, though I wasn't sure what should be different about them. I told my artist how I didn't love them, and he assured me that with the sky and background filled out, I might feel differently. So I trusted him and continued into session 3 getting mountains and a sunset sky added. This is where most of my regret and tattoo anxiety stems from.

I feel like the orange/red/pink just makes it look like I have a sunburn and the purple like I have a bruise. The saguaros also still seem off to me -- so simple and flat compared to the bottom part. I just don't like them. The style and coloring doesn't seem to match with the detailed prickly pear below. They seem like separate pieces; the top part bright, simple, and neon with the bottom being more detailed yet tame and subdued. I hope that makes sense!

Like others who experience tattoo regret, it's been difficult to eat and sleep. All I do is obsess about how much I don't like this part of my tattoo and how badly I wish I had just listened to my mom and kept the original prickly pear by itself. I had so much confidence before these last two sessions; now I feel like I've lost so much of my self-esteem. Not a good feeling when I'm about to move to a different country and start a huge new chapter of my life! Getting this tattoo (the latter parts of it) had the opposite intended effect.

It's only been a week, but I'm trying to decide whether I should have him attempt to change the parts of the tattoo I don't like when I'm back in town or just go for removal, perhaps starting while in Germany. Your thoughts? I realize removal of these colors is difficult and the size would make it a lengthy process. But with the new lasers that can supposedly treat the full color spectrum, is it possible I could have a bare shoulder again someday? I'm now pining for the naked skin on my shoulder...thinking about this part being removed makes me feel so much better instantly. So just knowing whether or not it's possible would help me out quite a bit.

Thanks in advance to anyone's insight, support, help, etc. I've been able to relate to so many people's stories here. I would definitely appreciate hearing from those who a) understand what I'm feeling and b) who are knowledgeable about the tattoo removal process, especially on large color pieces.

(To be clear, I'm only interested in removing the sunset sky, saguaros, and mountains -- leaving behind the beautiful prickly pear. Thanks!)

Just keep that in mind that you are not alone and your feelings are legitimate as I'm writing this comment I myself am experiencing anxiety and depression but most importantly REGRET it's a monster that eats you up, I've got a colorful half sleeve it's a month old tattoo which got burned by Medlite tattoo removal and a severe allergic reaction to orange ink I'm left with scars ! But I feel like there's nothing to do but to hope for the best I'm looking for Picosure laser tattoo removal, let's just assume this is a journey and we've got a story to tell years later . Shall we?

Thanks for your comment, Tingiv! It really is a monster that eats you up. But at least there's a community of people who understand the feeling. And you're right, best to think of it as a journey and life experience. I've certainly learned a lot about myself through all of this! All the best to you and yours.

I know how you feel. Im 4 sessions down with my colorful thigh tattoo. Im having treatments down by delete tattoo dr chung and dr mundt in phoenix. They use the picoway laser which has a wavelenth for almost every color. Im happy with the fading so far but just know its a long and frustrating process. I started in december and think ill finish the year up with only 6 treatments since you wait at least 8wks between them. I wish you luck and if you get a chance check out delete for a free consultation and tell them maisey sent you. Its not a cheap process but they offer discounted packages and financing too.

Hi Maisey, thanks for your comment! I'm in Germany now but may need to go to Delete Tattoo later in the future. I found a PicoWay in town here I may use...what's the cost where you go per session? The doctor here estimated $280 per treatment which seems very cheap for the PicoWay...glad to hear you're happy with the fading! Are you going for full removal?

I feel your pain. I only got one session into a cover up tattoo and I instantly regretted it. I love the tree I have on my shoulder, but wanted to Hebrew cover the letters under the roots. Wanted to change them into rocks and have water flowing down them into my elbow, but I just feel so terrible about it. Stuck between hoping I want to finish it by the time it fully heals, or starting removal sessions, as less ink = better results. Water isn't totally colored in with the light blue, but I'm more concerned with the white shading on some of the rocks/water. At a loss. Can't eat or sleep.

I totally understand the feeling of not being able to eat or sleep. In my case it's gotten easier over time, but only because I think I've decided to go with removal which has given me some relief. All the best to you, I hope you find some relief as well in whatever your decision ends up being!

I understand your frustration with a tattoo that you regret. I had one removed and feel so much better after having it (mostly) gone. If it's any solace I think your tattoo is a beautiful tribute to your home and I think the artist did a lovely job. So sorry to hear you don't like the way it turned out. I think it looks gorgeous but it's on your body and you have to decide what to do. Hope you figure it out! Good luck

Thank you! It is great work, I just feel like (part of it) isn't for me. I'm still trying to decide just how much I want to remove/change...I think I'm going to start with removal/fading of the sky for now. I'm glad to hear you feel so much better after having one mostly removed! I think I'll feel the same. Can yours not be completely removed or is it still in process?

Hi Jessica, give you some time to asimilate and accept the tatto, i think is great!, the colors will lose intensity with time, relax for now.

I agree. Beautiful tattoo. I don't think she should begin tattoo removal treatments in Germany. Give some time to show it off, receive some compliments and get used to the colors on her arm. Her tattoo is a big change from a bear arm to such a bright tattoo. I hope she accepts it for now.

Hi Robert, thanks for your comment. Glad you like it; I'm still feeling uncomfortable with it. Still giving myself more time...but I think I'll start with removal/fading of the sky in a few months.

Consultations in Germany, test spot with PicoWay

jessicafaye
Hello again!

My initial post was at the height of my anxiety only a week after finishing my tattoo. It's been almost a month with my tattoo now, and I'm still not comfortable with it. I'm going to give it more time before committing to anything, but I did recently have a consultation here in Germany and actually did a test spot with the PicoWay. It was included in the consultation, so I decided why not -- I definitely want the sky part of my tattoo faded/changed so I figured it was alright to try a small test spot. PicoWay is supposedly the best laser around, right?

The laser definitely hurt, but it didn't take long so it was bearable. I think the doctor used all three wavelengths in the spot. He put a cream on it and then covered it with plastic wrap and told me to keep it on until the next day. He also prescribed me a cream that was made by hand at the pharmacy and to use this once a day.

The spot was sore the first day, now it only hurts mildly when I bend my shoulder in a way where that spot twists/bends. Currently it's looking grey...wondering if this is normal?

I'm going to another consultation in a different city next weekend at a place with a PicoSure laser. This place is exclusively for tattoo removal while the place I went to for the PicoWay was a private plastic surgery clinic. Any thoughts on which would be better based on this information alone?

Will try to continue making updates. Still feeling the sting of regret -- waves of anxiety that wash over me with the words "why did you have to do this to yourself?" I can't help but feel like I would be so much happier and healthier had I not gotten a tattoo at all. But I was dead set on doing it, so it would have happened anyway. Sigh.

On a side note, I'm loving it here in Germany! It's been a wonderful distraction. :)

Congrats on starting your journey!

Thank you! I'm a bit worried I may have jumped the gun a little early with doing a test spot on a month-old tattoo, but it's just a small area so we'll see how it heals. Happy for you that you decided to go for removal! I hope that's helped you to feel a bit better about everything.

Thanks! I do feel better, honestly. I'm sure since it's just a test spot, you'll be okay. Plus, if you wait till until the test spot heals the rest of the tattoo should be good to go!

I too have a tattoo regret. Mine is 5 weeks old. Some parts still healing because the artist worked too much on my skin. A piece of top layer flesh fell over. Scabbing and scabs fell. Now pink exposed flesh. Another part of tattoo has Skin that feels rough and bumpy. Artist admitted his fault and told me it would all heal in another 6 weeks. Kinda upset. Not only that Artist tattooed a big part with a much darker shade than the picture i showed him. Been feeling down with this big overall multi coloured tattoo.

1 week after test spot with PicoWay

It's been about a week since my test spot with the PicoWay. I think healing has gone well...been using the cream once a day the doctor prescribed me. Just a little scabbing left, but I can't really tell what's going on in that whiteish area. I think maybe some hypopigmentation is occurring. I'll of course give it more time to assess the fading and whatnot. In two days I have a consultation with another place that has a PicoSure. I'll ask them and see. I hope to hear optimistic news from them about the rest of it...

Maybe it needs more time to heal for the white to go. Usually takes 6 to 8 weeks.

hey best of luck with your journey!
May I ask in which city / which place you are treated? There aren't too many places here in Germany that use the Picoway
September 18, 2017
Thank you! And there's a Picoway at Privatklinik Proebstle GmbH in Mannheim. http://www.privatklinik-proebstle.de/dermatologie/laser-und-lichtherapie/tatoo-entfernung/

I'm sure this is a lil too late to say, but your arm tattoo is really gorgeous and the thing that would've saved this piece is if you added a frame around it. I can see why you don't like it, but if you could add a really designed frame, you'd be able to pull this off and it could make you a lot happier.
