Getting Rid of an Embarrassing Tattoo Through Picosure

I often see lot of people asking questions about tattoo removal and I wanted to share my experience with you all. I've always wanted tattoos that represented the kind of person I am. I see tattoos as a form of non-verbal communication and as a shy introverted type of person I wanted my tattoos to communicate this to others. The overall theme I was going for was nature. Even though I am male I have always felt that I had a strong feminine side and wasn't ashamed of it. I wanted to get a birds/flowers/butterfly type tattoos to communicate my softer more feminine side and eventually get a skull or more manly piece to represent my masculine side.

Anyways along the journey of working on this sleeve I had a really poorly drawn piece tattooed on me. The artist convinced me that it was going to look a lot better once it was done and I didn't say anything and let him tattoo something that he probably drew up the hour before I came, even though I had booked the session 3 weeks in advance. I just couldn't stand it! It was embarrassing and on the most exposed part of my arm! I was ashamed to wear short sleeve shirts and even wore an elbow brace telling all my friends that I hurt my elbow. I knew I couldn't live like this forever and began the search for a tattoo removal centre.

The town I lived in had only one tattoo removal clinic I believe (I could be mistaken) and they only had the Picosure laser. They were really nice and accommodating, didn't judge me or the tattoo did an analysis on my skin type etc. I'm a dark skin and received a score of 4 on the Fitzpatrick scale. They did warn me that due to my skin type I'm at higher risk or hyper/hypo pigmentation but because it was a tattoo done in black ink they believe they should get enough of it off within 8-10 sessions with each session costing $180 AUD. I was leaning towards getting it covered up anyway and decided to go through with the process.

My first session was a light session where they wanted to see how my skin reacted to the treatment. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary after my first treatment, no blisters/bleeding/scabs. Within a few days it looked like nothing was done on my tattoo. I came back after 6 weeks and my tattoo hadn't really faded at all. Since there were no adverse reactions by my skin, I started getting higher power treatments.

In the end I managed to do a total of 6 treatments which got a lot of ink off, a lot more than I had expected and was happy with the results. I waited 6 weeks between each treatment. The only big reaction I had was after my third treatment I got some really bad blisters which healed pretty well after a week. My last three treatments blistered as well but not to the extent of first blistered experience. I had informed my doctor about it and I believe they reduced the settings. During the process my doctor informed me that he had observed some hyper/hypo pigmentation and avoided those spots to see if they would resolve by itself, which it kind of did. Maybe if I allowed for more time I could come to a better conclusion if they actually did. I did also develop some minor scarring here and there but since I was planning on getting it covered up I wasn't too bothered. After my 6th treatment I felt enough had come off, I was still wearing my elbow brace to cover it up and just wanted to get a good tattoo done over it and be able to walk around freely.

In the end I found a better tattoo artist who did a cover up of exactly what I wanted and I am happy with how my arm looks now and flaunt it proudly. Overall the tattoo removal process was painful and expensive but my overall experience with the picosure laser on my dark skin was pleasant. Even though I went through phases of pigmentation issues and some scaring, I think if you were planning on getting it covered up it should be ok.

Unfortunately I never took photos in between my treatments as I hated looking at it. My doctor did and I have recently asked them if they could email them to me if they still have it. I will update this post if they do eventually send them to me.

How long after your last treatment did u wait before getting the coverup? It looks great, by the way! I just did my first picosure today and was not expecting so much pain. (Back of neck).
Thanks! I waited approximately 3 months after my last treatment to get the cover up
