I'm a 23 year old living in Guelph, Ontario who is moving to the UK in September 2017 to study Law.
-I have been battling insecurity and anxiety about my nose since I was in the 9th grade.
-The way I see my nose in the mirror, in sunglasses, and in pictures does not reflect the person I am on the inside.
-Rather, it stifles my bubbly and expressive personality.
-I have come to realize that if I do not get up and make a change, this will bother me for the rest of my life.
-I am sick and tired of dealing with this through repression and listening to other people's opinions of my nose.
-Life is too short to not go out there and make a change that will impact you for the better.
-I do not want to spend the rest of my 20s, my youth, battling shame and embarrassment, panicking when someone is taking a picture of me or filming me, feeling exposed and insecure putting my hair up, in fact never cutting my hair too short or changing it up/dying it a different colour in fear it will draw more attention to my face, hating my face in sunglasses, worrying about what angle of my nose is facing someone, my nose getting in the way of things because it's so long, etc etc.
-This decision goes along with my struggle to maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Instead of silently complaining and feeling bad about myself, I am ready to make the changes in my life to break free of this wall of insecurity and uncertainty and live up to my full potential as a happy, confident, go-getter.
-as someone who lives with generalized anxiety disorder that often manifests itself in social situations, I am READY to have one less thing to feel anxious about in my life. I am ready to be free from the limitations my nose has placed on me for 10 years of my life.
-I am ready to LOVE my nose, LOVE my face, LOVE my body, in the same way I love other parts of myself: my intellect, my empathy, and my passion for helping others.
I am in a unique position (not unique for me though...always doing things last minute) as I will be moving to England in mid-September 2017 and am hoping to have my surgery done BEFORE then (pray for me!). I have already booked three consultations with the following surgeons: Dr Corey Moore, Dr Rival, and Dr Oakley Smith (in that order). My consultation with Dr. Moore is next week, which is amazing since the other two are not until the end of the month and early July respectively. Since this is all happening very fast, I'm going to be researching like crazy for many days to come.
Looking forward to this journey!

Hey girl congrats! I'm glad you're sharing your journey with us(: I'm happy for you I can totally relate to you and let me just say you're going to be so much happier with your new nose ! I feel so confident now but also keep in mind that swelling is going to play a big role in your life and you're constantly going to judge it but don't mind it at all until you're a year post op. Many people tend to do that! heck I do it all the time but my nose is so much better now and I don't regret my decision at all! Also make sure to really look through all the Doctors you consulted with and the noses they have done(:

1 Consultation down, 2 (or 3) to go

Since I am pressed for time, and would like to have my surgery as soon as possible so I can heal before school starts, I have booked 4 consultations in hopes someone can get me in in July 2017.

I believe that all of the surgeons are leaders in their fields and I trust all of them with my face.

I met with Dr Corey Moore in London and had my consultation. Unfortunately I froze up and didn't ask any of the questions I wanted to, so I left feeling kind of uninformed. He was very confident that my desired changes were achievable and realistic. He told me I have neither thick nor thin skin..rather something in the middle. And he said I have strong nasal bones and cartilage, which is a good thing for results and predictability. I booked my surgery for the end of August...but I really don't want to wait that long and have my surgery so close to leaving for the UK! It would give me just under 4 weeks before leaving.

I'm meeting with Dr Oakley Smith this week, Dr Peter Adamson next week, and possibly Dr Rival at the end of the month. This time I will be more prepared with questions. Here are some unattractive pictures of my nose that I took for my dad who seems to not see why I want to change it...

I want to fix the slight deviation to the right, shorten the overly long septum and the tip.

First of all, congratulations on this journey. Second, my husband also did not "see" why I wanted to change my nose. I took him to a consultation with me and the doctor told him bluntly, "Yes, she need deprojection." He still wasn't on board! Now I am 6 months out and he has said more than once "You did the right thing, it looks great." He has also told me several times what a difference it made and how he didn't realize how much until it was done. You are going to have people who will say "I like your old nose." My children kept saying that at first when I was in the swelling stage. Bottom line: You know what is best for you and this is your journey. You have beautiful bone structure and all of the features that you love about your face will only be enhanced when this is done. Be prepared for the rollercoaster of the first few months of healing. You will have swell days and even question yourself. At about 2-3 months, the final product starts to emerge and you will be able to really see the tip definition. Have a hand mirror ready because you will continually look at it in the beginning. It is hard to get used to the change! It is so worth it, though. I am happy for you, following you and can't wait for July 24th (maybe even the 13th!!)

Thank you for sharing your journey with me. It's very hard hearing my family tell me "you don't need it" "you have a beautiful face" and question my motives or wonder if I will never be happy with myself....going to the consultation gave me some validation that the irregularities I notice are REAL..even if others don't notice them. That's one thing I'm worried about is people telling me they like my old nose better..or feel like I made a mistake. But I'm hoping since the changes aren't incredibly complicated or drastic, it won't be a massive change. I am glad to hear you say it's worth it. Congrats to you too for following through with this incredibly personal journey. You are beautiful and I'm sure your husband and children see how happy and confident you feel today. The more happy and confident we are with ourselves, the better we can be for the people around us.

I'm in the same boat at forty. Everyone told me I was throwing away my money, I didn't need it, I'm beautiful the way I am, etc. but I wasn't happy and that's what's important. Also, everyone now tells me I was right!! I KNEW it!! Lol. Anyway be true to yourself and do what makes u happy!

Decisions, decisions!

I ended up cancelling my consultation with Dr Oakley Smith after reading he charges $2000 deposit just to book a surgery date. Not cool with me. He was also the only surgeon out of all my choices who my partner's mother does not know personally (she knows a lot of them!). And he has no spots left in July. So going with my gut I decided to cancel.

I phoned Dr Peter Adamson's office to see if he still has dates open in July and they informed me that he DOES! Which was so exiting as my consultation is on Monday with him and I have a great chance of getting a spot.

GAME CHANGER

Dr Corey Moore's office called me this morning and said, due to a cancellation, they can move my surgery date up from August 21st to JULY 24th!! Of course I took it!

I still plan on seeing Dr Adamson at least for a second opinion. He also might have a date available as early as July 13th. Now...do I go with Dr Adamson (got more years of experience on Corey but charges way more- starting at $10,900) OR do I keep my new surgery date with Dr Corey Moore who quoted me a $7,900. The tricky thing is, when I had my consultation with Dr Moore I wasn't prepared with all the questions I had for him. I emailed his receptionist to see if can get some answers to some important questions I have. Now I will just wait to hear back from his office and wait til after my next consultation with Dr Adamson to see how I feel.

Sounds like you are doing the right thing. You cant put a price on your face. Good to be as informed as possible. No matter what I'm sure you'll make the right decision for you. You already have a very nice nose and i can see how acouple tweeks would make you feel better. You dont really need to change much at all. You are a beautiful girl already. Excited for you and looking forward to your updates and which doctor you chose.

Thanks for your comment!:) I checked out your page and WOW you're looking so great and healing very nicely! Makes me feel a bit more confident that I will feel presentable by the time school rolls around in September. Thank you very much for your kind words. All I can do right now is carefully weigh my options and make a final decision. Which I think will be harder than it sounds. But I believe I can't go wrong here as both surgeons are extremely skilled and experienced!

2 months in my nose was just swollen mostly when I first woke up. 4 months in now and most swelling is gone. You'll be fine. I will warn you most of us freak out after lol. It's called post rhinoplasty anxiety and it is very normal. 3 months in you are very human again so to speak. I look back now and think I was just freaked out not having a timeline of healing and what to expect over months and months. But by 2 months you'll feel mostly normal again. 4 months in I'm feeling like all the panic was silly but it's hard to know!!! You'll be fine for school. Only you and your doctor will really be able to see any swelling

This information was SO helpful! I will keep this in mind during my journey. As someone who already lives with anxiety, I want to be prepared as possible beforehand so I can cope with the healing. When do you think I can resume exercise and/or sport?
June 17, 2017
Venus is so right. Be prepared for a little emotional rollercoaster. My doctor said I could exercise at week 6, but I had septo, too. For regular rhinoplasty, most tell you that the first 3 weeks is critical because of clotting and bleeds. Nothing with weight lifting or holding breath. Of course ask your doctor, but most say 3-4 weeks minimum.

If i have my surgery on the 24th

I started running walking intervals at 3 weeks. at about 2 months i was running up to 10 miles. I just eased in. but I will tell you in the first few weeks that I pushed myself hard and got my blood pressure up it did make me swell and become very sore. so take it easy and ease in. I as well have anxiety and use exercise to help cope with it. I NEED my exercise. Also I found push ups were too much pressure for my nose as well. I'm weight training about 1 1/2 hours, 5 days a week now and doing fine. but your first couple months itll affect swelling. just ease in.

Keep a running list of questions and ask as many as you need to feel comfortable. This is a huge decision, you need to be well informed. It is so exciting that you will have your surgery soon!

You look amazing!! Seeing you beautiful ladies makes me a lot less scared. Here are some questions I have. Let me know what you think! 1. I want to know how the shortening of my nose will affect the appearance of my lips and mouth when smiling and relaxed? And how the space between my nose and mouth will look?

2. My nose is deviated to the right. I have heard that after surgery sometimes the nose can twist back to the side of it's original crookedness. Does my face have some other asymmetry that we need to take into consideration?

3. How will the straightening of the bridge affect the width of my bridge?

4. I do not want my nose to be too upturned. What can i expect?

5. Can you talk me through exactly what you plan to do during the procedure? In terms of what steps And what parts of the nose will be worked on and to what amount? I really want to have a solid understanding of what is going to happen and what to expect after.

6. Have you done many noses that are like mine and require similar amount and kind of work on them?

7. Can I see some before and after pictures?
June 17, 2017
I think you should ask every question you need to to make you comfortable, regardless of whether someone else thinks it is a good question or not :)

That said:

Question 1: I feel it will be very hard to give a satisfactory answer to this one. There is no surefire way to predict what your new nose will look like, or how it will progress as it heals. However, for the most part it is my experience that a well done rhinoplasty doesn't really change this area too much for better or worse. Just improves overall facial harmony.

Question 3: This is one you won't know the full impact of until postop and postswelling. They can look at your nose all they want from the outside, but until they're really in there doing the procedure they don't have a 100% grasp of how things will go. In my own case, one side of my nose was shifted over a little bit more than the other, resulting in a very slightly thinner bridge.

2, 4, 5, 6, and 7: Great questions for the surgeon!

You have such a great attitude towards things. And you seem to be doing all the right things in terms of research and not limiting your options. I look forward to hearing more about your journey. Best of luck.

Oops I posted before I was ready. If i have surgery on the 24th it will give me 8 weeks before I expect to start doing sports again. Hopefully that will suffice!

It's good to hear you're getting a second opinion to back up what Dr. Moore is recommending. I looked a little bit into Dr. Moore and couldn't find any before and afters for his rhinoplasties. I assume he showed you some during the consultation? Dr. Adamson has the same issue of no published before and after photos. Without evidence of fixing similar noses to yours, you should be very hesitant to undergo surgery. Anyway good luck with whomever you choose!

I haven't seen any before and afters from either of them :/ I forgot to ask during my consultation with Dr Moore but I followed up asking for them in an email to his receptionist. So we will see. I'm going to remember to ask Dr Adamson if he can show me some on Monday.
