Tray 2 (Two-week update)

User Avatar

Hey Invisalign buddies!!

Well, it's been just over two weeks (17 days, to be exact!). I know I've disappeared for a bit, but I thought it best to ride this out a bit and post an honest update.

I'm now 3 days in my Tray 2, and honestly...things are going absolutely great! Let me try to recap as best as I can.

Tray 1: I honestly expected the absolute worst. Excruciating agony. Discomfort. The general sentiment of "I hate life" etc...If I can be completely honest, it couldn't have been further from that. The next day, yes, I had tenderness...but as I posted in one of my comments, I was still able to eat just fine (just much more carefully). It was completely tolerable. I've gotten accustomed to flossing/brushing my teeth four times a day...though usually in the comfort of my own home (I've been fortunate to be able to work from home a lot the past few weeks). I have eaten at work twice, and like a champ, have marched on into the washroom and brushed/flossed, without a care in the world.

I went for my follow-up apt on Thursday. I pointed out to my oath that I thought I was missing an attachment. I think she might have accidentally sawed it off when she'd originally bonded two of my teeth together - Oops! She confirmed that one was missing and re-attached it. She gave me 6 more sets and told me she's see me again in ~3 months (12 weeks).

Tray 2: I swapped out my trays Saturday before bed...popped an Advil and went to bed. I woke up Sunday morning expecting pain...and to my disbelief: nothing! THAT SAID, I did start noticing the tenderness later Sunday night. But again, nothing unbearable. The new tray was surprisingly painful to take off....I think partly because of the tightness of the new tray, combined by my 14 buttons which latch onto those trays for dear life, compounded by a new attachment I'd been living without for 2 weeks. It's now been about 72 hrs and taking the trays off is already getting easier and less painful.

I know this update isn't super detailed, but to be honest, I don't think the intricate details of my day to day routine would differ much from what we've read on these posts a thousand times before. But the point I did want to be sure to convey (to any new Invisaligners out there) is that it isn't all that bad...at least not for everyone! So while you should be prepared for the worst, know that it isn't always guaranteed for everyone. Don't get scared! :)

Random facts so far:
- There's no keeping my bathroom mirror clean with the constant barrage of flossing and tray cleaning...spots EVERYWHERE! (Am I just sloppy?!?!)
- I've quit smoking since Invisalign. There's no way my mild-undiagnosed-OCD would allow myself to smoke with trays in!
- Dry lips, yes...though not much worse than I suffer on a day-to-day basis.
- The trays surprisingly shield my teeth/gums from the frigid -30C weather outside. It's kinda nice! :)
- I still have random dreams about my trays....had one just last night, actually.
- Couldn't figure out how to use Orthowax to save my life....it just gooped up my trays, but Emery boards, let me tell you: MAN'S BEST FRIEND!!! There is NOTHING WORSE than using alcohol-based mouthwash with fresh irritation spots/areas from the trays on the inside of your lips. OUCH!
- I have NOT managed to lose weight. #InvisalignDietFail
- I have the freshest/mintiest breath EVER! Though I'm sure brushing/flossing 4X a day and quitting smoking DEFINITELY had something to do with it! ;)
- I'm pretty good with my 22 hrs a day. Sometimes I go slightly less than that, but nothing major.
- I've cheated a few times and drank either white wine or vodka with my trays in (they're clear, right? PLUS, I removed the trays and swished water - or brushed - when I could!).
- No visible changes, in my opinion (I know - it's only week 3!), HOWEVER, I will say that I've noticed a few areas that are MUCH easier to floss now. Where the dental floss used to get caught between my teeth contacts, in a few areas, the floss slides right in and right out without even trying....so that's a positive and noticeable change!
- Already I think I'm beginning to adjust to the "schedule" or routine....it's definitely a process, though I think that's the part that I like (again, refer to mild-undiagnosed-OCD above). LOL ;)
- Though I'm sure it's your head (and also due to the fact that I've just had a cleaning a few weeks ago), I feel as though my teeth are cleaner...possibly whiter? Again though, probably WAY too early for that and mostly in my head. But I'll take it! :)

I think that's it for now. Sorry if this is a bit of a random rant....I'm sure I'll have more focused posts once I have less "new things" to post about! In the meantime, I thought I'd share a few pics taken just now. Enjoy, and talk to you all again soon!

Yeah, ortho wax is definitely a bit of a mission. Less is more, and you just kind smudge it over the edge so it covers either side. Although emery boards are a bit easier in the long run. :) I'm jealous that you were able to quit smoking with your trays in!!! Sadly I'm not OCD so I still smoke with them in, which basically means I have to soak them in water + polident retainer more often (every 2 days or so). It's definitely a crappy habit - good on you for ditching it so easily!

Thanks!! I dunno that it's easy, but I'm doing it with the assistance of the patch. The trays are just more of an added motivation to quit....So far, so good! :) And yeah, I definitely noticed that the ortho was is a bit of a mission!!! I just took the emery board to my 2nd tray (again!). It was fine all week, and today it started cutting into my lip again and bothered me all day. I find it really odd that it started hurting outta nowhere like that. Sign of teeth movement perhaps?
February 27, 2015
Happens all the time for me, all is hunky dory, and then the inside if my lip, always in the same spot starts feeling raw as it seems to catch at the top of the tray. Doesn't happen with all my trays, and never right away. Then, out of the blue, I have to go running for my trusty emery board. It definitely means some movement is going on. Glad all is going well for you, I only ever had one painful tray, number 18, and it was more an extreme sensitivity issue which disappeared with tray 19. Can't believe I will be in tray 28 next Thursday!!!!! Oh, and congrats on the smoking ( or not) thing! Since the invisalign diet is not working for you, at least you are getting a different healthy bonus. Good on you!!

HAHAHA Thanks! Wow....I wish I could say I was about to embark on Tray 28 next! It's funny you mention that the sudden appearance of lip pain means movement is happening...I was thinking the same thing...Perhaps there's some truth to it. :) I'm finding myself happy with the trays for 1 week, and by day 7, I'm already wanting to switch trays...I know that I'm not ready for it, but part of me is like: "ugh, I have to wait a whole other week?!?!?! BOOOO". I'm finding myself starting to feel like that already...one more week to go before Tray 3.
February 28, 2015
I feel the same way. After about 5 days, it just feels like I am wearing a mouth guard, and no more movement is happening. I wear each tray for 3 weeks though, so it is a long time to wait !!!
February 28, 2015
Totally normal, I feel the same way. I am now over a week into this tray, and can't wait for Thursday, my change-out day, because already this one is loose and I keep sucking the day lights out of it.....just because I can...without pain. I do get it though, those roots are not called roots for nothing. Uprooting them for the move to their new abodes has to be done in little baby steps.

Pic - Tray 1

I'd forgotten to include a pic with my first set of trays. This was right after I came back from the dental office...in for ~1 hr at this point.

I'm noticing that my upper trays protrude further down than my two front teeth causing a little gap between the teeth and trays. I find that because of this, I tend to notice that gap more than if they were hugging my teeth. Oh well, perhaps that'll change as I progress through the two weeks.

Usually they recommend chewies for that, but I know they were out.  One of the community members in Clear Correct just chews on a rag.  I know it sounds kludgey, but it worked fine for her, and it might be a good temporary option for you, to help the aligners fit those two teeth faster.  It's also supposed to help with tenderness.

AH! Good call. Using a face-cloth as we speak! I've officially dedicated this facecloth as my dedicated "chewie" cloth! Mental Note #1: wash it in water...not really loving the fabric softner taste right now. LOL
February 9, 2015
Ok, blankie rag (aka spit rag) it is, then. Chew away!

LOL!!! I did not think of that. :D

Hahaha. Just brushed my teeth and flossed for the night. Facecloth in my mouth as we speak. I'm 1/2 tempted to post a pic. LOL #EmbracingIt

I had the same; the Chewies help!!! My bottom tray is worse that top. Even with Chewies I can't get it flush...
February 9, 2015
Ok, dare I say it again? A jelly-filled teething ring will do the trick. So will jujubes or jelly Bears, but see if you can get sugar free versions.
February 9, 2015
You need to get those flush, so that subsequent trays fit properly.

Ack! Way to put the fear in me! :P Point well-taken though. :)

:)
February 11, 2015
I think it's normal for trays to not flush at the beginning of the cycle. It takes a few days before they begin to fit perfectly. It's cool cos you get to see/feel the progress!

Great, you have started! I am looking forward to reading more about your journey an experiences along the way. I am very anxious about the process myself, but you seem to be taking it very well and in stride! A couple of questions: Did you have any issues speaking with the invisalign in and has anyone noticed them so far?
User Avatar
February 13, 2015
Thanks for posting! Don't be nervous about the process. Really it is fine. :) I actually had two people (who know I have Invisalign) tell me that I'm not speaking any differently. One of which told me today that she was actually listening for it. That was reassuring - I talk a lot while at work. :) Be sure to post updates and pics of your journey.
February 13, 2015
That's good to know! Thank you for replying and for the reassurance :). All the best going forward and I'll also continue to check in!
