On my quest to achieving a fuller, denser beard, I...

On my quest to achieving a fuller, denser beard, I recently set out to the streets of Toronto in hopes of finding an experienced surgeon and staff that I felt comfortable in dealing with. Given the patchiness in my facial hair region, my ultimate goal was to achieve both greater coverage and higher density via a procedure called “Follicular Unit Extraction” or “FUE”.

Now I’m a bit of a research nut, so before setting out on my quest for a fuller beard, I made sure to thoroughly read up on the various procedural options available to me, their respective downtime, potential side effects, etc., so I would be better equipped to ask more substantive questions during each one of my consultations (I recommend everyone reading this to follow suit). I eventually had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Jamil Asaria and his incredibly friendly staff at FACE Cosmetic Surgery, located in the Annex. I should mention that prior to my consultation with Dr. Asaria, I had previously met with four seemingly "high profile" Toronto cosmetic surgeons regarding facial hair transplant surgery, so this was effectively my fifth meeting (I’m very picky). From my perspective, what really set Dr. Asaria apart from the others was his in-depth experience, thoroughness, attention to detail, and caring attitude. Unlike the other surgeons, he actually took the time to explain the procedure in full detail, presented alternative options (ie. FUE vs. FUT in addition to the pros vs. cons of each), and also provided me with realistic timelines in regards to downtime and results (with photos). I would like to further note that the other four surgeons (that shan’t be named) all seemed to be in a frantic rush, provided little to nil advice, lacked enthusiasm, and did not care to follow up. From a branding perspective, this is a complete turnoff as you start feeling more like a number rather than an actual patient.

After deciding to move forward with Dr. Asaria, I scheduled my procedure a month and a half following my consultation. I opted for maximal grafts (1500 follicular units or approximately 4000 hair grafts) at a cost of $12,500 + HST (more or less market value in Toronto). Two weeks prior to my surgery date, I had a follow up appointment at the clinic, where I was provided a package of easy-to-follow pre-op and post-op instructions, in addition to the necessary prescriptions (antibiotics, oral cortisone med, and painkillers) required post-surgery. Despite the fact that this was a 10-12 hour procedure, time seemed to pass relatively quickly, likely due to the fact that I given a mild sedative and thus was asleep for most of the procedure. I should note that this was a relatively painless procedure, whereby the only somewhat uncomfortable portion involved the injection of local anesthetic in the facial region, which in itself was done with care and precision (similar to a dental appointment).

I’m currently on my 4th day (post-op), healing quite nicely, and couldn’t be more excited for the results to come. All said, Dr. Asaria and his staff did a fantastic job in regards to not only the surgery itself, but also making me feel comfortable every step of the way. I will not hesitate to recommend Dr. Asaria’s services to anyone contemplating hair transplant surgery, in all its various forms.
