Wow, I have 6 days to go before the first day of the new me. I am 46 years old and 5'2. I have herniated disks in my back and neck, breathing and sleeping issues, high blood pressure, takes a bag load of meds and just had a hysterectomy 3 weeks ago. My hubby recommended I have a breast reduction to ease my back pain. My argument was that's not going to resolve all the issues, losing weight would be mult-purposeful. A week ago I was 233lbs. Today I'm 218! I am welcoming any advice, helpful tips, and recommendations as I continue the's last 7 days. ....Anxiously waiting

After the sleeve, you might find you no longer need a boob reduction. One of the saddest side effects of my sleeve has been losing my boobs. ;) Pre-surgery, I was a 38-40DD, and now I'm a 36D. I don't mind the band reduction so much, but the cup size dropping kind of kills. ;) Make sure you vary your liquids so you don't get tired of them and become tempted to cheat during your recovery. I got so sick of broth and jello, but my surgeons also had a very unusual and strict post-surgery regimen. It was two weeks post-surgery before I could have anything other than clear liquids, another two weeks before I could add puréed food, two more weeks before soft foods, and a final two weeks before food restrictions were lifted. It was terrible, but their statistics on complications are way better than the national average, so maybe there's something to their madness, lol.

Well today the shakes are yucky. I mixed a grape protein drink with a vanilla protein shake. I also got a call that my hemoglobin is 9. I won't be able to have the surgery if it's not higher. They are going to check it during admissions the day of the surgery. Wow. I really just want to get this over with.

Iron pills! Or drink a green smoothie with some spinach! That will increase your blood count. Eventually, you'll need to take an iron supplement anyway. Protein shakes can be gross. I had my surgery through the VA and they sent me home with unflavored Beneprotein. Trying to drink those was horrible. I had to drink them from containers with a straw (which is bad) because of the smell. I'm not a fan of powdered protein drinks (though EAS's fruit smoothie powder isn't bad). The past couple months I switched to Premier Protein shakes. You can get them at most grocery stores and warehouse stores like Sam's Club or BJ's or Costco. 30g of protein, 160 calories, and I think only 2g of sugar (but it might only be 1g), plus a bunch of other vitamins. They're tasty and pack a lot of protein in a few calories. Chocolate is my favorite flavor but the strawberries and cream isn't bad.

Thanks! I've tried the strawberries and creme. I've mixed it with vanilla protein shake & then the variations with rum extract, vanilla extract,etc....to the point I almost cheated on Saturday! I wanted a bacon cheddar cheese burger with sweet potato fries. Picked it up but gave to my husband. Whew, that was close.

We have the same surgery date! Good luck to you!
July 13, 2015
How are you doing?
July 13, 2015
The nerves haven't hit me yet. My pre op diet isn't as strict as most I've read. One week of low carb, high protein. Tomorrow is only liquids, then Wednesday is the big day!
July 14, 2015
You're right. Mine was 2 weeks of clear liquids!

I think the biggest challenge I had were the Saturdays before the surgery. Because I had to do it during a holiday, July 4th.Barbecue,cheese & macaroni, etc. But I survived it. The biggest thing that really helped me was to journal. I wrote not only how I felt but primarily everything I did or drunk. For example, 9:00 Breakfast -Strawberry Protein shake Am/Bm, 12:30 Snack - jello, 3:00 Lunch - vanilla protein shake with water on ice, 5:00 snack- broth 7:00 dinner -Mixed Protein Shake 9:00 popsicle. So now I can continue and reflect on my journey to a new me.

I am going to start journaling now on my Google calendar to start practicing. I have started cutting my food intake way down and am very surprised at all the positive changes I can make and still not lose weight. I am just now hearing how my insurance company requires my 6 months of classes to be 28 days apart so to get my surgery in December I now have to seriously push everything up.

You are doing great!

Thanks. My sister who had the sleeve about 3 years ago, expressed her concern for me to prepare for my mind ma want to eat what's in front of me but my stomach won't let me. I too have prepared for such issues like this from participating in other weight loss ventures. So I have ordered those small containers and labels so what I don't eat now I can eat later. Attempting in the beginning to rotate the meals & empty the containers within a weeks time. I'll try anyway.

It's hard to cut down to the diet you'll be on after surgery until your stomach is that small. I couldn't do it. I was fortunate in that I had no dietary restrictions until the day before surgery (because when my surgery was initially approved, I barely met the minimum BMI requirement for it with a co-morbid illness), so in the weeks leading up to surgery, I ate all of my favorite foods at all of my favorite places and I gained 16 pounds from the date of approval to the day before surgery. Oooops. I even had the best intentions of doing the post-surgery diet in reverse, to ease myself into it (which I'm glad I wasn't able to do properly--it was hard enough doing clear liquids only for those 2 weeks post surgery (and the day before); I can't imagine what it would've been like doing it even longer!). But after surgery, I've had no problem with the tiny portion sizes (I joke my 7 month old niece eats more at one time than I do). In fact, I've found I struggle to eat as many times as you're supposed to. I had cravings for certain foods at first, but they've gone away. Now, I'm happy if I get my protein all in, and get at least halfway to my fluid goal. Seeing the results in the mirror and feeling how loose my clothes are getting has kept me motivated, along with the fact that I really hate the feeling I get on those rare occasions when I've 'overdone' it (hello that breakfast where I ate 1 egg and 2.5 pieces of bacon--I'm talking to you, lol!), so that also helps keep me in line. But you're getting on up close to D-Day! My utmost sympathies are with you if you have to do the same pre-op yuckiness that I did--8 ounces of magnesium citrate was both disgusting to drink and unpleasant to say the least as it took effect! Good luck, and may I suggest keeping some of those moist toilet wipes on hand? ;)

Isopure. I recently ordered the Bariatric advantage orange scicle. It's really good. Especially $2.95 ready to make bottle just add water.

My surgeons had me drink it to make sure my digestive tract was completely clear (less risk of stuff leaking out while they're working and causing infection--also gives a little healing time before you have to poo after surgery). I only had to do clear liquids the day before surgery, though, so maybe that's why it was necessary for me. If you've been clear liquids for a week pre-surgery, you're probably pretty cleaned out, hahaha.

Yes, I've truly made this far by faith. I've made it through the rigorous process of getting approval. Made it through the classes, the tests, and yes even the 2 week of clear liquids. Thank you Lord! Now a few hours away, I will introducing a new me...Wow, almost here.

Good luck! Can't wait to see how you're feeling in the days after your surgery. The pain pump was my friend. True story, I thought it would only give me medicine every thirty minutes so I would only push the button then...I found out several hours later that it was set for every 10 minutes. I denied myself so many hours of pain medicine! But maybe that helped me get used to the pain and wean myself off the pain meds quicker. I was pretty much off altogether a week after surgery.

Stopping by to say god bless you and happy sleeving, tomorrow is my big day also and I will be praying for the both of us.
July 15, 2015
My prayers are with you also. I pray that the surgery is a success, we have minimum pain, and may God remove any fear but replace it with faith. By His stripes we are healed and sleeved in Jesus Name! Amen.
July 15, 2015
Good luck! Tomorrow's my big day as well, sending prayers to you both!
