WORTH IT
I have to agree with another reviewer the office is struggling right now with scheduling; hopefully a situation that can be resolved soon. But I don't really care about the doctor's managerial skills -- only his skills as a surgeon. I was totally impressed by the consultation, and I had another TOP Doctor in years past to compare to. Jaime Leon Campos listened to me carefully, responded graciously to all my questions, he's humble (ego won't get in the way), intellectually curious, caring. I had some Juviderm done while I was there, and he did a wonderful job, including fixing a botched botox application done elsewhere (he propped up a sagging brow & eyelid with filler in the brow). But back to the BBL, clearly he's a 'booty-man'. His photos suggest he's very good with this procedure.

The staff, despite their struggles in office mgmt/scheduling, are nevertheless very sweet, made me very comfortable when I did have to wait excessively long. Gladys is a very sweet girl and went above and beyond to help me with my needs. So, I'm a patient women, and I trust my judgment of Dr. Campos.

Looking forward to your review! It's nice to see people my age getting a bbl. I'm doing it just still interviewing Drs

You are quite welcome. Yes, my age, and in my case also single, which is even more motivation, b/c potential male partners place a somewhat higher premium on body shape than women expect of men. With exceptions, of course. -- Carolyn

Yes, me too. The real motivation is my self-esteem -- I want to be able to look in the mirror and not hate what I see. I want to feel confident again.

There is something about having to look at that body every morning that takes the spring out of my step. And I have otherwise good self-esteem -- all the intangibles -- but our bodies really do affect our self-image in a big way.

I'm VERY interested to see your pictures once you are ready. I'm 47 and lost 35 pounds and the extra skin underneath my butt is horrible! Mine looks like a cellulite appearance to. If I pull the skin up my legs are smooth. I also see dimples in my butt cheeks. I'm praying that with a good BBL with implants I can feel good about the back side of my body. I also am very curious to see the severity of scars there are and where they are placed. I appreciate anything you can tell me about this and the cost of the procedure. Take care of yourself during this healing time I will stay tuned :-)

Thank you Angela. I just wrote a similar but expanded review under Campos, "Butt Lift", because ultimately I didn't get a BBL; he convinced me that unless I get rid of the extra skin, neither my BBL or thigh lipo will look good, in part because I didn't want him to stuff all that extra skin with fat to fill it out and make it smooth. I'm a 55 yr old -- I would look silly with a Kim Kardashian butt.

I think these assessments are also made based on the degree of dimpling and how much extra skin and skin elasticity. So I would ask your doc for a realistic expectation for the BBL (fat transfer; no big scar), given your extra skin. And ask yourself how much bigger a butt you can accept. The only thing they can do with extra skin is: 1) stuff it with fat to fill it out, or 2) cut it off.

So, I have a scar now that goes almost all the way around, but a scar low enough that it would be hidden by panties or a bathing suit. I decided I'd rather have the scar and beautiful bottom and tummy and waist then the dimpling and sagging that would not be remedied by either lipo or a BBL, in my case. My skin has very bad elasticity; that's an important factor. I wouldn't expect the scar to fade for a year, and will still be visible, but the trade-off was worth it to me. Not an easy decision though.

Bathing suit and panties off, if it really bothered me during the first year or so that the scar heals and fades, I could always wear and lightweight/comfy/lacey garter belt to hide it, if it made me more comfortable during sex.

My boyfriend assured me he'd still love me and be attracted to me, scars and all. He also still loved me and was attracted to me with my extra dimpled skin and other unsightliness, but in the end it's how WE feel that matters.

I had a tummy tuck and surgical butt lift, and the cost was about $7,500, inc. lipo on my belly and back, below the waist, to get the hourglass shape. A surgical butt lift is more expensive than a BBL. I'm not sure what the price would have been for the surgical butt lift alone.

I'll keep in touch. And post photos as soon as I can (I live alone, harder to take rear end photos, esp. when in pain and swollen). But it looks great.

It occurs to me that if you are starting with a very small and flat bottom, and need enormous amounts of fat transferred, the risk of disappointment may be higher. A good question for the doc. Ask him to be realistic about the dimpling, and if a BBL will make it go away. Implants? I would think that would take care of the bottom dimpling, and if you made your bottom big enough, it might lift up on the extra skin on your thighs and take care of the dimpling there. Just a thought.

Campos also suggested a tattoo could help minimize the visual impact of a long scar. I can picture that working, helping.

Extraordinary care from Dr. Campos office

User Avatar
55 and counting
I had my procedure (BBL + tummy tuck) a few days ago, and while it's still too early to comment on results (normal swelling, etc) I can already see an hourglass figure I didn't have when I walked in the office last Friday. And my bottom is at least a couple inches higher in elevation than it was before, and shapely. More on that later, but I wanted to say how impressed I was with the extraordinary level of care I received from Dr. Campos and his staff (Tijuana Mexico). I feel qualified to say so because I've had two other procedures (including lift surgery) from a "Top Doc" in northern California, so I can make a comparison.

From the Northern Calif. "Top Doc" there was no pre-surgery testing and no post-surgery inpatient aftercare -- you are escorted out the back door while you are still groggy with anesthesia. No pre-surgery blood work. Contrastingly, Dr. Campos not only did blood work, but I received a pre-surgery EKG as well. Following surgery, they keep you overnight with round-the-clock care, and breakfast and shower in the morning. This amazed me; such a contrast. Clearly Dr. Campos takes your health and well-being very seriously. His staff texts me every day and responds promptly to questions and concerns.

I also wanted to comment on the anesthesia. As we find out more and more how common it is to suffer lasting cognitive impairment from general anesthesia -- which is essentially a pharmacological coma -- I tend to want to opt out of general. Dr. Campos anesthesiologist (UCLA-trained) did a spinal tap instead, which pleased and reassured me I was in no risk of anesthesia-related memory deficits (which can last months or even years, depending on age, etc.). He also carefully reviewed my medications list before anesthesia and asked lots of questions.

A great experience.

Fantastic. You are making me excited to get it done. Hope you have a smooth recovery
User Avatar

I should clarify that I got an actual surgery lift of my bottom; not just the fat transfer of the BBL (my sagging was bad enough that a BBL alone wouldn't help because there was just too much extra skin, and I didn't want a huge booty. That means there's more pain and longer recovery than a simple fat transfer. But I have had lipo done before (on my tummy, different doc) and there is pain and bruising and swelling -- all normal. So expect that, but if your doctor's before and after photos suggest he's a 'booty-man', and he's a good doctor, I think you should be excited. It feels great to have a shapely bottom again.

.....and thank you, lpatte, for your well-wishes; that is very kind.
(as an aside, I've been wearing long shirts that cover my butt for years, even in the heat of summer. I'm really looking forward to being able to wear clothes that show off my shape instead of hiding it.

Yes just to feel comfortable in your own skin again. My non existing butt never kept me from doing anything but it certainly determined my wardrobe choices. I always had a small waist but in the past few years stubborn belly fat made me feel less sexy. I had a TT after my last child in my 30s so I'm familiar with the extent of recovery after surgery. Just keep thinking of summer and how everything will be healed up and feeling great.

Thank you again. I will, as you suggest, 'keep my eye on the prize' - confidence!

As another aside, they suction out the belly and hip fat when they do the BBL, resulting in a nice hourglass figure, over and above the nice booty.

How did you like the juvrederm? I'm getting a consult on having fat transferred to my face at the same time as my Bbl. noting major just a little on my cheek bones to look fresher
User Avatar
January 25, 2016
I'm super happy with the Juviderm, especially on the cheekbones (I can't speak to the facial fat transfer). I never imagined how much younger one looks when their cheekbones are filled out again. In my case, I had a longer-lasting Juviderm applied to the cheekbones -- can't recall the name but it is the same manufacturer. It has a thicker consistency and is longer-lasting, so great for cheekbones. The original juviderm being best for the finer-retouching, but doesn't last as long. I also had some filler in my nasal-labial folds, the small "marionette" indentations under the corner of the lips, and a little across the top of my upper lips, which filled out the vertical lines above the lip nicely. By all means, get your cheekbones done. It has the effect, it seems, of lifting other areas of the face as well.

I'd like to underscore the importance of not getting too much filler right away -- always best to be conservative in the amount to start. Then ask to see a mirror and decide whether you want more. There is also natural swelling from the injections, so keep in mind it will not be quite as puffy a few days later.

I'm very wary of botox -- not just because I had a bad experience (different doc, an RN) but because ppl I know that have had too much botox look just plain weird -- the paralysis of the muscles may smooth out lines but it also eliminates the very natural fine lines we have when we smile. But there are doctors out there with lots of botox experience that may know just how much and where. I would trust Dr. Campos with botox.

Also important to note that the cost of the injections was half as much as the same injections in California. Great savings, if you don't mind the trip. I combined the injections with a surgery consultation and they gave me the consult free of charge (at Dr. Campos'). For me it was a 12 hr drive to Tijuana but the savings paid for the trip and then some. Tijuana is a big, beautiful metropolitan city now; not the Tijuana we heard stories about decades ago.

Juvrederm pro is what they use in a liqued facelift they say it last 18 months but I'd rather have it permanent if I can. So happy to see other women 50+ getting work done I was feeling a little guilty about doing it.

Oh I think you will!
Booties are a lovely part of the anatomy, all those nice curves (for the lucky ones).

Interesting how much attention paid to bottoms in the media now (when I was growing up we thought our breasts were the most important part).

No Lap Kitties! Post-surgery warning

User Avatar
55 and counting
On a topic rarely considered -- pain and shock caused by lap kitties, post-tummy tuck surgery, when they jump in your lap. They really should include a warning in the aftercare instructions.

Expect these heat-seeking missiles to be irritated when suddenly your lap is off-limits, the mood heavy with their indignance, as you can see in the photo below. Then hurt and confusion.
But now, looking at the photos, it occurs to me that Kramer could use a chin implant.

Keep a good eye on your incision. I had a pretty bad infection with my TT. If you feel heat or see redness get on antibiotics. Mine heals fine after a few months but I have larger scar because of it.
User Avatar
January 26, 2016
Thanks for the warning -- I'll pay closer attention. They did put me on a preventive antibiotic but only a sulpha drug ( I understand the importance of not prescribing antibiotics unless they're actually needed). One interesting thing about dr. Campos is that they recommended showering everyday, patting it dry and then spraying it with a little antibacterial spray bottle they give you. When I had my inner thigh lift by another Top Doc, 10 yrs ago, he said "no showering. What were your aftercare instructions? I'm curious.
User Avatar
January 26, 2016
They had me shower and pat dry. I think my infection came from smoking at the time. I was a heavy smoker and I just didn't get enough oxygen in the area. The blood supply is already limited by I jinxed it by arrogantly smoking. I don't blame the doctor, he was fantastic I just didn't listen. Lol

Hi again,
How long was the pain intense after your tummy tuck? I mean intense enough to need to take pain medication....thank you lpatte.
User Avatar
January 26, 2016
I tick pain meds the first two days and then occasionally at night to get a good sleep. Pain wasn't to bad I had a hard time getting off the toilet or out of bed. Thing that you need to use your stomach muscles to do. I remember rolling to get of the bed lol. The bad part of the TT that I wasn't prepared for was the swelling. Mine lasted 6+ months.

I understand totally -- I use voice recognition software all the time and send out some funny bloopers at times.

I don't know why but for some reason I seem to have more pain than some or many other women. I'm on day 3 and the pain is not substantially less than it was the morning after, and I'm having to take meds every 6 hrs., albeit tramadol; not an opiate). I'm not a weeny -- the pain is real, and sharp. Had a hard time with my leg lift surgery too. I've read that everyone doesn't experience pain the same way.
User Avatar
January 26, 2016
Well you had a lot more done at once. I hated after its healed you get the sharp electrocution jolts of pain when the nerve endings are growing back together. I also had my TT at 33 so I'm sure the healing was faster. I'm worried how long it will take for the bbl. I see the younger girls looking great a 2 weeks. I will probably sore at 2 months
User Avatar
January 26, 2016
Probably...but still worth it.
In my case, they had to make an incision all the way around, front and back, so probably explains extra pain. Yes, those growing nerve endings are a strange sensation indeed. Thank you lpatte.

Just keep popping pain pills and relax. Eat lots of pineapple to reduce swelling. Or tale the bromelain tablets. Don't rush recovery you will look fabulous for Spring
User Avatar
January 27, 2016
I didn't know pineapple was a diuretic! Thank you, I will, and I appreciate your encouragement. The recovery is a challenge, indeed, and can be lonely, so I appreciate the dialogue. Many of my friends/colleagues are a bit judgmental on the topic, so I don't feel like I can talk about it with them. This forum is a blessing.
User Avatar
January 27, 2016
Not sure if it's a diuretic but it is anti Inflammatory. A lot of the Miami doctors have it in their recovery meal plan for bbl patients. I used bromelain tablets with my TT but I'm sure eating it is more effective. It did help with the recovery. I love this group too. I love to hear all the stories and great advice from people who have gone through it. The doctors only tell you so much.

NO COMEDY! Another post-surgery warning.

Gets a bit lonely sitting in bed alone with the pain and fears post-surgery. Live alone. Last night I decided to boost my mood with some comedy -- youtube videos of my favorite comedians. The minute I started laughing the pain was intense and it felt as if I was straining my incision. But I couldn't break myself away because the comedy was so good. So I tried laughing through my nose, with my teeth clenched and my tummy as still as possible. This helped, but then I pulled a muscle in my abs region that I felt every time I moved in bed.

So, just a head's up.
