A Terrible Experience Following Revision Rhinoplasty With Dr. Bahadir Baykal
I am writing this review now because I was recently asked to present my revision case at a scientific conference, and I chose to decline. That request prompted deep reflection and made me realise that my experience should no longer remain unspoken. This is why I am sharing it here, even after many years.
I am not writing to seek financial compensation, revision surgery, or any form of personal gain. This review is shared because what occurred during my postoperative care remains unresolved on a professional and ethical level. I underwent revision rhinoplasty using rib grafts with this surgeon.
Throughout my hospital visits, I was treated harshly, and his tone was raised on more than one occasion. I did not feel spoken to with respect during a time when I was particularly vulnerable as a patient.
On the day the cast was removed, my nose was cleaned using suction and the cast was taken off. Because I was anxious, I clearly asked that my nose not be touched. The response I received was, “I am the only one who can touch your nose.” While applying the tape, firm pressure was applied to my nose to the point that I felt something collapse. I cried out in pain but was told this was necessary. Shortly afterward, a visible indentation appeared, which is clearly shown in photographs. This was not part of the original surgical outcome or normal postoperative healing, but appeared to result from direct pressure applied at that moment.
When I later raised concerns, they were dismissed as part of the “recovery phase.” Non-surgical options such as fillers were suggested instead of addressing what appeared to be a structural issue, along with postoperative nostril asymmetry that had not been present prior to the revision.
I was further informed that any additional surgery would only be considered if I brought my brother with me and paid the hospital fees, despite being told that the surgeon personally would not take payment. Communication was then discontinued.
After the cast removal, permission was also requested to use my photographs for publication, which I declined.
I want to be very clear: I did not confront the situation at the time, nor did I behave disrespectfully in any way. I remained silent and respectful because the surgeon was significantly older than me, and I trusted his position as a senior physician. My silence should not be mistaken for acceptance. I was treated unfairly, and the manner in which I was handled during a vulnerable moment left a lasting impact that went beyond the physical outcome.
Time does not erase responsibility, and a patient’s experience does not lose its validity simply because years have passed. I regret choosing this surgeon and the way I was treated during this experience. I expect nothing from him. This review is written for accountability and to raise awareness for potential future patients, so they can make informed and careful decisions. I would not wish what I went through on anyone.
Because I believe I was wronged, I leave this matter to God and trust that true justice ultimately prevails.
