Fat Fit, Needing to Drop Some Pounds

I am not the typical overweight person. I work out...
WORTH IT$6,900
I am not the typical overweight person. I work out pretty regularly and stay active. As I approach my 50's it has become increasingly difficult to lose weight. It is my hope that the balloon will inhibit food intake so that I can retrain myself and get educated about how much is enough. Since this procedure requires no cutting I was willing to give it a try.

did you do the procedure?

November 28, 2016
Can you please share your experience with the first couple of days of nausea and vomiting and how to manage to get over this? How long did it take you to feel normal? I'm scheduled Dec 19.... Thanks for sharing

November 29, 2016
Hi! 20 minutes after it was inserted into started to vomit. On the ride home I felt like I had been poisoned and vomited into a barf bag several times during the ride home. It was MISERABLE, I felt I had made a horrible mistake. Buy/make Popsicles and get a strong sleep medication to help to hydrate you and get some rest, the first week is hideous! Do your best to try to stay hydrated. Sleep on an angle, as upright as possible. Jacuzzi or warm baths daily really help before bed. The second week will be much better, you will see results right away, good luck!
November 29, 2016
I am hoping the results will offset the misery you are describing. Are you happy with the procedure?? How are you feeling now?

November 29, 2016
I feel great now thank you, the results will motivate you. The sickness is the *mental part of the treatment, it will help you "reset" your relationship with food, you will only choose to eat when necessary and only eat what you really want. The feelings of pleasure will be replaced by satisfaction that you managed to get something down. Fast food will gross you out, salad too tough in the beginning, sweets icky. I have stopped drinking coffee. Just no desire. The misery will give your eyes something to think about and be a constant reminder that the WORST thing is to be stuffed! Random nibbling will end.

Now that a major "food holiday" has passed... how are you doing? I am considering attempting this in lieu of surgery as well. I am very interested in your progress. I love your attitude!

Crazy nausea
Days 1 and 2 have been pretty miserable. Nothing stays down, no water, ice chips, Popsicles, medication all comes up. My stomach is empty and I'm thirsty. Tiny sips of ice cold water helps for a short while.
Sleeping, if you can, must be done on your left side. I feel very weak.

I am scheduled to have the ballon placed this Friday and I am very nervous I'm expecting the worst. I have work that following Monday and hoping I feel well enough by then. Good luck on everything and hope you feel better hun

October 16, 2016
The first two days, are miserable, but they improve. Be sure to keep a barf bag near, not a lot of fluid, just your body trying to rid itself of a foreign object. 12lbs in 3 days...

Me too! Friday, Oct 21 at 4. I'm hoping that my walking will speed my weight loss, it seems like most people don't drop that much in the first 6 months (I know there is still support for next 6 months after). I am 5'-6" and managed to get up to 180 since March, after being at 150 for 6 years (with a rise to 170 while I had plantar fasciitis and 135 before that. My husband was diagnosed with a horrible terminal illness in March and i just ate and ate. (I had started running a few times at 150 and it had helped me start to lose weight and I can't even run comfortably now). I had a face lift this summer (planned a while back) and I figured I'd LOSE weight over the summer to go with it but instead, I was just too emotionally a mess and here I am at 180. I will also be going to PT for next few months (to finally get my lower body strength back from the plantar fascisiits). Planning on 1-2 weeks of nausea but hope to be walking 5-10K steps... Also my dr has free online fitness classes... We'll see if I can do these...

October 17, 2016
The nausea is unbelievable, two weeks would feel like punishment. Try to get your meds to help lessen the intense feelings to vomit. This is pretty serious, you can pass out from dehydration so take good care

Wow my appointment is at 3pm lol. Well I'm sorry to hear you are going through so much. This hasn't been the best year for me as well. I never really exercised much just always maintained my weight I guess from being young, out and about and such. But now I'm at 215 pounds. Something gotta give. I actually went up to 225 lose 10 through diet and exercise but now I feel like I'm at a stand still. Everything I do is sooo uncomfortable. This weight has a hold on my once very outgoing life. I don't assume this will be an easy Jorney but hopefully in the end its every thing we want. Good luck luvs

My dr has ordered emend 40, ativan 1 if needed, zofran 4 mg every 6 hours, levsin 0.125 spasms every 4 hours
Meanwhile I had my first nutritionist meeting (The doctor has all patients using an application that connects you to fitness classes, nutrition group classes, private nutrition classes etc). So it sounds like starting 48 hours before procedure Friday the 21st (which will be tomorrow, wed the 19th at 4 pm) I am to go to clear liquids only (then only small drink in morning since the procedure is late afternoon). She said apple juice OK but other places on web say to distill apple juice. I drink Bai 5 and she said that's fine. What was interesting is she says, after orbera inserted, the object is to drink and NOT feel nauseous afterward . She also said that the best way to do this is to drink my (total a day) 64 oz in small amounts every 15 minutes or so to work on this fighting the nausea and it's best if liquid is ROOM TEMPERATURE. I had never seen that before but she said the liquid temp does effect feeling of balloon in body when hot or cold liquid "hits" it. Interesting. Less than 72 hours to go....

I'm on my fifth day and the nausea has finally subsided. I have begun eating broth and jello, sugar free Popsicles are helpful. So are waiting baths and jacuzzi. Weight day of procedure 235, weight today 220lbs.

October 18, 2016
Medications that you can't keep down due to nausea and vomiting are pointless, remember that when purchasing the Emend. You will begin to feel better once your body stops trying to reject the balloon. The Zofran tabs are bitter, the Ativan is no knock out solution but helps. I wish you luck. 3 days, you should be clear.
October 20, 2016
I'm nervous too, 24 hours to go. I put on 30 pounds when my husband was diagnosed with a terminal illness. I can't seem to drop it and I know I am going to have to face my emotional eating but right now, I hate to leave the apartment, I feel so self-conscious. I need to be in good health to take care of husband (and 9 year old) so this is my commitment. I am walking 3-5K a day but I am going to PT twice a week too. I am going to try some virtual fitness classes (they come with my dr's package), nutrition classes, nutritionist meetings, calming and fitness classes.
I am scared I won't be able to do anything for a while, and I'm scared somehow I won't lose any weight. It's ridiculous how I worry!

I'm excited yet so nervous. I received all the meds and started to take protonix this week. I also started the liquid diet. I feel sorta week not eating and solids. Im going to have some broth and hope that helps. Tomorrow is the big day yay.

October 19, 2016
So, I spoke with virtual nutritionist and I forgot to tell you guys, she said DON'T use a straw, it adds air. I read elsewhere to stay with warm foods (whereas I read room temp elsewhere). My surgery was moved up to Friday morning. oops, I ate food today not knowing. Clear liquids/pureed according to others. What were you guys told for 48 hours before? (I know clear ONLY 12 hours before, but what about the 36 before then?)
October 20, 2016
Thanks, tomorrow is the big day. 4 pm. I've cancelled appointments for next week, hopefully I'll be able to be functional by the week after... BTW the emend was free from my insurer! i was given 2 (they are in bubble packs)
October 21, 2016
I'm done and in waiting room waiting forever r husband! They given me emend, ear patch and iv of nausea Meds! Hope I stay feeling like this!!! How are you doing princess!???
October 24, 2016
How are you princess401? I'm 3 days past and as long as I don't drink too much I am fine. I also found that dr suggested ativan for muscle relaxing (to improve esophagus and stomach fight) so I went with some valium i had every time i cramped and it is MAGIC, better than any of the meds she gave me. Today is purees, wish me luck!
October 25, 2016
So everyone was one point about the first 48 from Hell. I walked out of the procedure feeling fine. They also gave me iv meds. But by the time I went home. Horrible Horrible. Luckily I never vomited. I took the Emend right b4 the procedure. I def feel the ballon. And its been tricky to get comfortable while lying down. That cramping pain you spoke of ugh Im still kind of dealing with that now. I seen my doctor yesterday and im 5 down. I feel a way better than I did over the weekend. And I had to call out for work Monday. Ive been drinking water, Gatorade, sugar free pops, and tea for the cramps..My doctor tells me Im not consuming enough. But I am really not hungry .
October 25, 2016
Sounds like mostly same! Emmend didn't seem to do much for me, but the valium stopped the cramping. My dr said gummy vites for time that I couldn't get enough vitamins. 6# down but i have no energy for my PT or walking today (though I was OK over weekend) so i guess energy level is up and down. I've been cleared for purred foods, do you know when you can start? Hummus has been a savior as far as protein, I just can't get excited about these so called protein shakes (ie protein powder and water!!!)
October 26, 2016
Yes currently trying my best to have the shakes as well. But its taking me a whole day to get one down. My doctor suggests I start my soft diet one week from procedure day. So that's friday. No biggie that's right around the corner. And plus im not feeling hungry anyway. So protein shakes, soups/broth, water, apple juice, and Gatorade it is. Im feeling much better though. I just get stomach pains here and there. Sometimes I think maybe it's gas. My energy is def down. I think Im going to start taking vitamins to help.
October 26, 2016
My energy dipped day before yesterday and the nutritionist said I have GOT to get those protein shakes down. How much protein are you getting? Hummus alone wasn't enough! It was 3-4 grams of protein vs 25-50 for 1-2 servings. It is nasty but if i blend it with bai 5 (kind of ice t/fruit drink sweetened w stevia, it is MUCH easier to get down. Foamy, not chalky. I had no prob going from liquid to puree but then last night I over ate (had my kids weight watcher ice cream sandwiches) and i felt it today, BIG TIME. Back to SMALL portions and correct foods. I bet your pains are stomach cramping....
How do you make your protein shakes?
The valium to relax the stomach was hugely helpful for me, think dr can try it with you? Once i figured it out it was a BIG difference in discomfort.

October 27, 2016
PS my dr is going to give valium instead of alprazolam for relaxing the fight between stomach and esophagus (based on my experience). If you get cramps and have some, try a little (i'm not a dr but it worked like a dream). So I had a bai5 (energy/juice/tea drink) and then a protein shake (I blend a bai5 with protein powder in blender to make it more foamy less chalky). It came up. Oh well guess too many oz of liquids. Back to small servings. My weight went UP but i think it's constipation (miralax to the rescue). Can't imagine what solid could be IN THERE to be constipated. Couldn't exercise by walking yesterday, too cold!!! Got to force myself to get larger size clothes for winter and that is depressing, last winter i was 30 pounds less. Feels like I'm going the wrong way! But no way I can be really gaining bec i just don't consume that many calories. Dr says I just need to stay with plan and it will come off. Plan PT next week.

October 27, 2016
Hopefully your Dr. will get you on track soon. Listen to his recommendations, you'll get there , 15 days and Im 19lbs down! My faves are hot tea with lemon and honey, miso soup, solid foods: baked potato with cottage cheese, hominy grits with butter. Surprisingly good tea choices at restaurants! The Disneyland Hotel had an AMAZING tea presentation, perhaps you need to get out? You won't be able to eat much, but I seriously recommend you research the tea at your better restaurants! Treat yourself nice. You're making an effort. 1/4 tsp of sf Swiss Miss cocoa mix to any chocolate protein shake for a sweet fix, put it in the freezer, so good! Once you ditch the meds you'll be on your way. Wishing you the best. You're taking a step towards a better you, congratulations the hardest part is over!
October 27, 2016
Thanks, I am amazed at your progress!!! I had too much liquid today, so it came back up. I'm done with meds tho and I just had a beautiful formal tea at a French bakery (in a silver pot, separate milk etc) I felt like a queen. I'm really not eating much, but I made an appt for tomorrow and MWF for next week's PT. I get it because my balance is off and my muscles are weak from the long time I had plantar fascitis. It involves plenty of exercise and I am going to ask if i can also warm up with bicycle too. I just have this fear it won't work!!

October 27, 2016
Omg I had the hardest time going to the bathroom today. I literally had a moment on the toilet praying something happen! 2hours and finally I went. Relief!!..My doctor appointment for today ended up getting switched til 2moro but I am definitely going to ask about some other pain relief med. I have the chocolate and vanilla flavor protein shakes. With the exception of 1 day. I can only drink one and a half a day. The rest of the day I'm drinking soups and drinking apple juice and water. I can't wait to start eating regular foods again. Soft diet starting tomorrow. Im soo over soups. Everything im eating now is pretty forced. Not because I want it but more because I need it. Which is cool. Now if I can just get the stomach pains to disappear.
November 9, 2016
Well it's been almost 3 weeks since procedure and I still can't get the liquids/purree going. Even after the fluids at the ER I was sick and week again the next day and after my whole 5 days keeping "food" down, it started coming up again. My dr said she'd order dronabinal for me but she doubted insurance would pay (it's pharmaceutical made cannabis). I just got it tonight and I am praying it will help. This is crazy, the ER scanned me and baloon is in right place. I drink clear fluids slowly, but as soon as I go further, I'm throwing up. Has anyone heard of someone who can't get past the first stage???

How did u loose weight

Hey there! Welcome to the community, and thank you so much for sharing your story with us. I'm looking forward to following your progress as I'm in a similar situation to you, and trying to lose weight the natural way for the last time before considering surgery. Was the procedure painful?Â
Congratulations! 12lbs is an awesome starting weight loss! Please keep the updates coming :)
