Hairline Lowering with Dr Martinick, Sydney on 1 Sept 2018

39 days to go - hairline lowering booked for 1 September 2018.
BACKGROUND
After a childhood of bullying and a lifetime of wearing a fringe, I was so happy to discover there was a procedure to fix my huge forehead.
A quick google search showed two surgeons in Australia who perform hairline lowering - Dr Nettle and Dr Martinick, both in Sydney, both with excellent online reviews.
I emailed both for a consultation but was able to get in with Dr Martinick first. Over email I found out, Dr Nettle quoted $15,000 and Dr Martinick quoted $6,350.
CONSULTATION
Dr Martinick's consultation room is in a man's cosmetic clinic in Sydney CBD. That threw me a little at first as I expected a Dr's surgery style set up.
Dr Martinick didn't have a lot of information on her website about hairline lowering but was able to show me plenty of pictures of other patients. She was very professional and friendly and happy to answer my many MANY questions. During our consultation, Dr Martinick took photos and measured my forehead and according to "standards" for a woman, my forehead is 6cms too large. With daily massage, Dr Martinick hopes that we can get at least 4cms.
Dr Martinick then popped a headband on and styled my hairline to show what my results might be like. I cried! I was so happy with what could be possible.
I had originally booked my surgery date for July but some unexpected issues meant that I needed to reschedule twice. Dr Martinick's admin were so accommodating and wonderfully understanding about the date changes. They've really been great.
With a month to go, I'm starting to get nervous and excited.
My two biggest fears are shock loss and scarring.
I have fine wavy hair that I dye copper red. My hair density is already thin so I really really don't want shock loss - I'm googling all possible preventatives!
My surgery is on Saturday and I have to be back at work on Tuesday so I hope for a quick recovery. I'll continue to wear a fringe to cover the scarring but am already researching ways to minimise the scarring. I hope to have the scar healed in time for Christmas. I've been open about my surgery so my family and most friends know but it's not something I want popping up on FaceBook.

This is a great site to find out a lot about the procedure. I’ve gone into depth with my journey thus far if u want to take a peek. You must be very excited!
July 25, 2018
And you measured 6? I measured 9 cm before the procedure!
July 25, 2018
No, Dr Martinick said my forehead was 6cm too big. The ideal is 3cm. My forehead is also 9cm. Due to skin laxicity, we're hoping for 4cm movement, which is better than nothing.

PS is a personal choice, not a competition. You're welcome to post your judgemental comments elsewhere.
July 25, 2018
Oh I’m so sorry! I didnt mean anything by my comment!! My skin laxiciy wasn’t very good! I inly hot 2.5 off. My i tot said it’s all we could do safely and I’m happy with it. I really didn’t mean to offend you in any way.
July 25, 2018
* I was only able to get 2.5 off I meant because my laxicity wasn’t great
July 25, 2018
My doctor said we cold only take off 2.5 off mine safely I meant. I’m sorry, my typing is terrible. It’s def not a competition! I wish I could have gotten more off but m scalp wouldn’t allow for it.
July 25, 2018
I also want to wish you the best of luck with your journey. I was picked on my entire life for my forehead and it was awful. I understand what you went through. I could only get 2.5 cm off mine and I started at 9cm. I’m so happy with how it turned out even if it’s not as small as I’d ideally like it. It’s better than my previous 9cm! My recovery has been really rough though and I hope yours goes much smoother. You’re very fortunate your laxicity is so good and you’ll be able to get down to 3 cm (although it’s not a competition). Best of luck :)

Mine was huge.

I’m so exciting to watch your journey! I too want this procedure but just like you I have the same fears, my partner is not very accepting and a lot of people are telling me I shouldn’t do it. But if it is going to make us more confident and comfortable in our skin than it’s our choice! I can’t wait to see your process and wish you the best of luck :) good on you for doing something that is going to change your life in such an amazing way! [RS bleep]

It’s a bit of a unique procedure so i I feel like a lot of people are judgmental about it....unfortunately. How is it any different than rhinoplasty? Does your partner know how sensitive you are about it? I was so nervous and it took me years to talk to my husband about how it affected me. I just tried to hide under bangs but couldn’t take it anymore. I hope you get the support you need. You’re right, Feeling comfortable in your own skin is important <3

I completely agree, well to be honest he is more sensitive because I have already booked for breast augmentation, I do want rhinoplasty also but he says the forehead reduction is too far :( I think I’d sacrifice rhinoplasty for this procedure because I am more self conscious over my forehead size. He knows how insecure I am, but I think I come across too lighthearted when we discuss it! Thanks so much, and I’m so glad you are able to do this for yourself <3

Thanks E_mare95! Will keep you posted.

My parents, partner and friends all thought I was crazy for going for my surgery but once I booked it they were more accepting and now they think it’s incredible. There is such a change in not only my looks but my mental health, mood, everything. If this make you happier and feel better about yourself - I URGE you to go for it. I’m literally in tears typing this lol. It’s good to know I wasn’t the only one feeling that way but I wish you never had to feel like that either. I’m 21 and I’ve wanted this surgery for 10 years now. Don’t walk straight into it but don’t let it pass by either [RS bleep]

4 days to go!

electricbluekitten
4 days out and I'm starting to get really excited/nervous.

My mum is flying down on Thursday to take care of me post-op and my very energetic Australian Shepherd puppy is going for a holiday for a few days so he doesn't jump on me and rip my stitches.

Scarring and shock loss remain my biggest concerns.

I haven't had a lot to do with Dr Martinick pre-op but Nhu on admissions has been wonderful.

I got sent a preoperative info kit two/three weeks ago that's full of information. It would have been better to have been sent at the time of booking to save Nhu answering my silly questions but I think it's a new info kit they've put together.

I'm not taking any additional vitamins or medication preop but am continuing to do do the massage daily.

From what I've read from other patients, I need to get a neck pillow, antihistimes, strataderm and arnica tablets for post op. Nhu from the surgery said that Dr Martinick will give me a post op pack so I probably don't need to worry about half that stuff!

Although I'm supposed to have a week off to recover, I'll be working from home on Monday and Tuesday and will have to head into work from Wednesday to Friday. If I can work from home all week I'll definitely try. I'm a contractor so I don't have the luxury of sick days.

Will provide my next update post surgery.

Wish me luck!

Shock loss likely

electricbluekitten
So I've just received a call from the surgery to make sure I'm ready for the procedure on Saturday.

I asked about the likelihood of shock loss and the lady on the phone said that it's a normal occurance and 60-70% of patients experience some shock loss. So I'm now freaking out! I have thin hair that takes ages to grow! I can't afford to lose patches of my hair! Trying hard not to cry.

I'm now waiting to hear back from one of the medical team before I go into complete meltdown.

God, please let me be in the 30% that experience no shock loss.

Good luck! Wishing you a smooth procedure - please keep us here at RealSelf and in the community posted on how you are doing, and how it goes!

Try not to worry about the shock loss- hopefully it won’t be noticeable and from what I’ve read on here it should grow back within 3 months. I’m having this op done on 11th September in the UK. Keep us updated with how yours goes and best of luck! Xx

Good luck with your op & recovery. I’m thinking of getting this done in a couple of months also with Dr Martick.
